This isn't surprising. I would have guessed Kakko would get roughly equivalent to a later 1st. The offensive upside is not there to get more than that.

Borgen alone would have roughly that late 1st value going into the year but he's had a rough start and is probably worth more like a 2nd at this point, so add in the 3rd and 6th to get something like a pick in the 20s.

He might have better success with seattle since we do have a coach that is good at developing players and an assistant coach thats great skating coach.

Yeah, no.
As an Avs fan yes he is that's why Bednar puts him.on the 2nd like to drive that line. Mikko can't do that without Nate. The Avs record without Nuke is around .500 and over. 700 with him. He could have won the Conn.Smythe in 22.just as easy as Cale and he is a penalty killing beast.

He's a better all around player than Mikko there is no debating that.

That was trash deal come on. Kakko isnt that bad. 40 points he has shown at a young age.

a disgruntle player that just called out the team over getting healthy scratched for no reason. If dury thought he could have gotten way more than what we offered, he would had said thanks but no thanks but i feel NYR just wanted him gone before it ordeal make it even worse of a mess and they do need help on the blue line.

This is a terrible deal I dont think drury survives the end of the year.

Fair enough but Nuke hit ppg last year and close the year 2 years prior. He is such an all around beast he is every bit as valuable to the Avs as Rantanen is. I think even more so especially given the contract. He's a better overall player than Mikko
He fell one point short of 1PPG last year.

It's a numbers league, and unfortunately Kakko doesn't really have them. Combined with his recent comments and the urgency to get this deal done, not surprising the return is underwhelming.

Rangers should've traded him long ago to maximize value, but easy to say in hindsight.

3rd pairing guy, 3rd round pick and a 6th round pick for 2nd overall who put up 40 points in his best season.. Safe to say for the Rangers that turned out to be a bust.

Hopefully it works out for Kakko in Seattle.

Pretty much. Called out his teammates and coach, then had an absolute dogshit return game where he backed up nothing he said. All of that combined with Rangers looking to shake things up, they decided to move on and that's simply his value at this time.

Would it have ever risen? I have no idea. If the Rangers waited long enough maybe a swap for someone with actual upside but who knows i fsuch a deal every would have come along and the Rangers weren't waiting for it.

This guy will be in Finland sooner than later, I don't envision a long NHL career

What an awful trade for Rangers. Borgen is a pure cap dump pending UFA, and those picks probably aren't even worth it for getting rid of his cap.

So this trade assumes that Kakko has negative value, when he's a 23yo RFA at least capable of playing a middle six role with positive impact, and consistently has strong performance metrics.

Let's remember that a guy like Tanner Jeannot returned a first as a RFA, and Kakko probably has a stronger positive impact than Jeannot.

Kappo doesn't have neg value right now. But one arbitration hearing that's coming up and that changes fast. That said, still not the best return on Kappo.

How, exactly does that change fast after arbitration? Arbitration seeks to give fair valued contracts. Not negative valued contracts.

At 29 years old Kakko will not develop further. This was a fair trade.

Edit - Jesus he’s only 23. Wow. Apologies, assumed he was 29+ based on the responses in this thread.

I was told he'd get a first rounder
Like as a start for the trade.

Wtf is this. A 23yo 2nd overall for a couple throwaway picks and a dime-a-dozen 6th defenseman.

He was basically traded for nothing. If Kakko even turns into a 50 point 2-way player the Kraken hammered this trade.
