We'd have close to $4M accrued if we carry 22 roster players.

If you're looking for a RW (cough Kane cough), that $4M plus trading an expiring Sammy Blais contract makes him fit at 50%.

There are plenty of guys they can fit at 50% and only 22 roster play
But they are not carrying 22. Likely they do not want to waive anyone else.

Given that, and injuries, they are probably going to end up carrying the cap total of more like 24 players than 22.

Adding a Patrick Kane to this group would be very nice. But I'm also completely unwilling to part with a first to do so, because too many of our stars are either pushing, or are over, the age of 30 and we need more forward talent in the pipeline to continue to be a top team with Kakko and Laf, and hopefully Chytil, Kravtsov and Othmann, moving forward. Like, we really need two centers to add to that group of almost all wings.

This is the draft to get them in hand, since it's a loaded draft and you can probably find a future top 6 guy in the teens or a middle six guy in the 20s. In other years that may not be the case. You aren't exactly going to be picking high very often until you've completely expired the viability of Zibanejad and Trocheck. You have to have the kids developing way before then.

If anything, having two first rounders means they will definitely feel comfortable dealing one of them for Kane. I hate it, but do you really think they won't do it?

I'll never give that outlet a cent. Some of their stuff is good. A lot of it should just be free and is not of the quality to be behind a paywall.

Like their predictions. Rangers better be a playoff team or something went seriously wrong. But honestly I think you could put Shesterkin on 90% of the teams in the NHL and there's a good chance they'd at least make the playoffs.

I honestly would rather trade our prospects than picks. Not Laf, Miller, Schneider, maybe not Jones. Would have no issue trying to combine Kakko, or Krav or Chyti, maybe with Robertson, and a 2nd or two, in some way to avoid giving up a 1st. Not sure it would be possible though. Not sure how much they'd want the players either I guess,

And there are other targets out there I think I'd prefer to Kane, . Well, all relative I suppose. But I wonder if someone like Seguin would be worth kicking the tires on, for a cheaper price presumably. All though not sure how that cap situation would work. Kind of like Gallagher or Anderson from the Habs too... all though, no they're not near Kane's level, but I guess that's the point, they'd be a lot cheaper. Wonder how cheap Wheeler would be. Wouldn't mind having him for a year or two. He just got demoted from captain, might even want to give it a try with a team closer to the finals. Cap issues aside. But yea, pretty much anything that doesn't cost us a 1st, and if we can keep Kakko too, along with Laf, Jones, Schneider etc.. that'd be good. Id still move Chytil, Krav, Robertson.....

I don't know what they will do. Recent history has shown us that the Sather/Drury contingent likes to overpay for rentals even when it's not a wise investment (which is most of the time).

But your inclination to hate it is correct. It's bad strategy. Overpaying for deadline rentals is an ingrained hockey culture thing that coaches, GMs, and the homer fans tell themselves "is just something you have to do," as if you are going to lose the locker room if you don't, or you can't win if you don't, etc.

In reality renting should just be for patching up weaknesses or depth on the cheap. Like the Islanders giving up that haul for JG Pageau that one year, that was insane, but you see crap like that all the time. He's not a needle-moving player yet they paid ridiculous deadline prices for him.

The Rangers, on the other hand, we were told by an insider could have parlayed Chris Kreider into a player who is already better than him in Jason Robertson AND a first round pick to boot, back at the deadline a couple years ago. Astronomical and astounding that Dallas was willing to pay that price (and worse that the Rangers said no!). The fetishization of your current team over winning asset transactions is good old boy hockey culture, the same one that recycles the same failed coaches over and over again, it's this weird subculture that hockey has that no other sport has and it's far behind the times.

I love hockey and I love the Rangers but parting with either of those first round picks would be the height of stupidity. Which means they very well might do it.

3rd place finish behind Carolina and Pittsburgh.

2nd round exit in which Carolina exacts their revenge.

Igor is excellent but doesn't win the Vezina.

Halak is a league average backup.

Fox is Fox as long as he doesn't get hurt.

Miller takes a step or two forward.

Jones struggles out of the gate and is out of the lineup by November, he and Hajek platoon the rest of the year

Schneider regresses.

Kreider scores 30 again.

Zibanejad scores 40.

Kakko breaks out for 50 points on the year.

Lafreniere also breaks out for 25 goals/45ish points.

Chytil scores 20/45 points.

Trochek struggles out of the gate but picks it up in the second half of the year.

Panarin scores 85 points. Over 40% of them from the power play.

Goodrow misses significant time due to injury.

Kravtsov is out of the organization at the deadline.

Patrick Kane becomes a Ranger at the deadline, and is just ok. He walks over the summer and signs in Buffalo.

Overall, 47-30-5 for 99 points.
wow this is a detailed response

please be wrong about Jones

think how far we could have gone with a healthy Goodrow

IMO, Pitt series is put to bed earlier with him rather than without him. Probably would've had a big impact early in the CAR series as well.

His presence was definitely missed. Again, the post was about the group of injured players rather than just 1.

The Rangers are playing the entire 82 game season with the same 22 roster players? We have already seen what one injury can do to those plans. Players will get hurt. Players will get sick. Flu. Covid. Apparently, we will have another active Covid season. Everyone should get a new booster shot.

This season is 185 days. Hunt's cap hit is $762,500. Divide 1/185. Multiply that number by $762,500. $4,121.62 is the daily cap hit for Hunt. The Rangers say Blais is not seriously injured. He will be back soon. Until Blais is back, $4,121.62 is subtracted from the Rangers cap everyday with Hunt on the roster. There will be more injuries.

A 185-day season for salary cap purposes

Puck Pedia: Last season had 200 days but this season will have 185 days for salary cap purposes.

Accrued days will be worth more this season than last season but it also means that teams will get less benefit at the trade deadline for accrued space.

If a team has $1 million in projected salary cap space at the deadline, they can add a player with a $4.5 million salary hit compared to $5 million at the deadline last year.

The Athletic honestly wasn't that far off and they're probably a wildcard team. I think we're a good team but in the tier right below contenders.

Absolutely everything went right last year and I don't think that, from summer 2021 to summer 2022, the window/outlook has changed as much as people think it has.

And that take has absolutely nothing to do with preseason.
If we're being honest with ourselves, this team, on paper, is worse than the roster that went to the ECF. Our success is going to hinge on how much progression we get out of 13/24/72/74. You could argue that every single member of that group outside of Chytil have underperformed expectations thus far in their careers, at least in the context of where they were drafted.

Wildcard sounds about right, IMO.

My issue with the Athletic was always their inconsistency, both in terms of quality, but especially with regards to how many articles get pumped out. During the season, I would expect to see an article the morning after each game. That's a given. But if I'm paying for the service, I expect to see deeper-dive articles at least once a week, and on a predictable schedule. For example, an analytics article weekly on a Saturday morning type deal. If you're asking for people to pay for your service, there needs to be a predictable product. I felt like Carp's game wrap-up articles were lazy and uninsightful, and I never knew when Shayna would be delivering articles. It's a shame, because there is a lot of quality content on that platform, but it's all over the place, and goes completely dead during the offseason.

It's disappointing, because I'm willing to pay for a good product.

I think trading our 1st will be dependent on Dallas. If it looks like that pick might get pushed to 2024, I don’t see us trading our 23 1st. I think we pivot to prospects and our non first round picks to get deals done. That’s assuming we even have the cap space to do so.

I don't think it's doom and gloom. It's more that it gets toxic around here when the expectations are unreasonable and then not met.

I think a lot of folks are of the mindset that the team is a locked-in Cup contender and then Lafreniere, Kakko, etc. will definitely progress and that's gravy on top of a great team.

I tend to think that Kakko and Lafreniere need to progress (with no guarantee it happens) just to get back to where they were.

Say what you will about Copp and Vatrano, but everyone seems to have forgotten that we looked terrible before the deadline acquisitions and we haven't replaced those acquisitions. We're rolling the dice that it just happens.

There's also the strong possibility that Igor regresses from one of the best goalies ever to "only" the best currently, and the strong likelihood that Kreider scores nowhere near 50 goals.

Personally, I would be very happy if we do see some progress from the young players and Panarin proves to me that he's not a net negative at this point. If that happens I'm not necessarily setting the standard that anything but an ECF return is an abject failure.
Toxic? Hell, no, it's got nothing on say soccer Tw@tter with it's remarkable portfolio of EDPs and their fans. You of all people must know lol.

BTW I'm the biggest LFC supporter this weekend, honest! #YNWA!!!!!!! ;)

That's kind of the point.

This site is a bastion of goodness and intellect compared to the deepest ass pits of the internet, and should remain so.
