As Tormund Giantsbane said, ‘This is the way.’

Yes, just like he also said, "which one of you cowards shit in my pants?"

Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: "I thought Dallas played very well in Game 1 and controlled the play for most of the game. They just got unlucky".

What game was he watching?
The same one we were all watching?

Dallas had the better scoring opportunities than we did, at a more consistent level. Outside of the first 10 or so minutes, this was a much closer game...with more moments than not where Dallas was swinging momentum their way.

I agree that it was much closer than the score indicates. However the Avs controlled the play mostly while the Stars had more high danger chances.

I think Dallas was the better team, but to say they controlled it is assinine.

People look at the 2 lucky goals for Colorado and say Dallas was unlucky. It's because they didn't pay attention to the full game. Yeah Dallas has some good play, but so did the Avs.

The thing that should be concerning for Dallas is Colorado didn't play their best. They can't expect us to continue to play at that level, we will also play better. I can remember 5 wide open looks, 3 of which were from Makar, that we just plain missed the net. If we continue to generate looks like that, we're not going to continually miss.

I think they got unlucky. But I don’t think they controlled play most of the game. It feels like half or more of their shots came from the power play.

Edit: Dallas had 13 ES shots vs 19 for Colorado.

Dallas' best chances, IMO, were Benn on the PP in the slot in the 1st period and Marchment, again in the slot, in the 3rd period. Blackwood squeezed the five hole on Benn's chance and somehow got Marchment's shot with his right hip/side of the body, I thought he was beaten.

Our goalie played a great game. Perhaps because we're not used to it, we're somehow feeling guilty that we didn't dominate the rest of the play? A goalie is part of the team, we have a good one. He did his job and Dallas didn't score because of it.

Were you watching the game, though?

The scoring chances at 5v5 were 18-16 Avs, the high danger chances were 9-9 and the shot attempts were 58-36 Avs.

The 1st period quite easily could have been 4-1 Avs if not for Oettinger/MacKinnon and Makar missing the net on WIDE open slot chances.

Just as Blackwood deserves credit for playing an amazing game 1, the Avs also looked rusty offensively and still put up 5.

I legitimately think Colorado missed the net more than they hit it in Game 1

That has to change, you cannot be shooting wide on that many clear scoring opportunities

Makar was absurd.

10 shot attempts, 1 of those on net. That was a weak wrister on the 5 on 3 PP that Otto stopped with a left pad save.

That won't continue. Makar will hit the net and probably snipe 1 or 2 of those wide open looks top shelf.

Exactly, why should we feel guilty that we got good goaltending? Blackwood played great. But I thought considering the situation how we hadn't played in a week, it was a decent showing by the rest of team as well. It certainly was not a game where we " just got lucky"

The Avs get good goaltending and the national narrative is we got lucky, it's BS. Why is ok that any other goalie has a hot night and the narrative is that team dominated. We have a good one, oh it was lucky.

Yep Makar couldn't throw a pebble in the ocean from a foot away the other night. He's not going to continue to miss wide open looks.

They've been horrible at hitting the net all season, but the other night was worse than usual.

On a side note if I have to hear Ryker say, so and so needs to recalibrate the rifle, one more time I'm going to lose my shit. It's so infuriating. Such a dumb way to say stop f***ing missing the net on open looks.

What am I reading here? This is some kind of strange Rorschach test.

The Avs significantly outplayed Dallas in game one. It was not close. At 5v5, especially through the first two periods, the Avs were completely controlling play. All lines, almost every shift. They were not just controlling the puck, they also dominated Dallas physically.

Yes, Blackwood played great and made some huge saves. But that is not even close to outweighing all of the opportunities at the other end of the ice. Makar alone missed the net on 2 or 3 golden opportunities. The Avs had a nearly two minute 5v3 they didn't score on. They barely scored on a double minor. Oettinger robbed Toews on a golden opportunity. The list goes on.

If not for Dallas getting the inevitable questionable powerplay in the 3rd period, Dallas would have been shutout. This game could have easily been 6-0 or 7-0.

I mean high danger and scoring chances were pretty close at game end. Dallas wasn't consistently threatening but did threaten well when they did it was usually a pretty high danger one. Blackwood was outstanding and the Avs played well, but I wouldn't say 5-1 well.

Those stats to me tell the story. The shot attempts were 58-36 but only 18-16 in scoring chances show that the Avs carried the play but simply missed the net a lot. Dallas had the best quality chances but the Avs had higher number of chances due to carrying the play most of the game.

To the eye test Dallas struggled to progress through the neutral zone due to their Dmen not being good on the breakout and the Avs coverage, which is why the Avs controlled play. Petey's video breaks that down quite well.
