Scott Wedgewood Injured in Pain on the Ice Refs Dont Blow the Whistle Buffalo Scores

How do you determine what is serious or not? How do you prevent divers and fakers?
It’s easy to tell. When someone dives, they get up right away and it’s obvious. In this instance, Wedgewood is laying on the ice clearly injured while the play is in the corner, then they come around the net and score. Plenty of time for refs to see that he was clearly injured

I love the Ava player going after the Sabres player for scoring the goal - play wasn’t stopped dummy

I mean that simply isn't true.

Well then this isn't up to their discretion you just want them to make the calls you want them to make innit.
I want them to protect the players and make good judgement calls based on their discretion.

Not stopping a play when a player is legit injured is WORSE than allowing a play to stop when a player isn't injured. That should be obvious.

It would've been a shame to see a bullshit empty-net goal end up being the decider like it nearly did, but on the other hand it is what lit the fire under the Avs to force another all-time choke onto Buffalo. Let's call it a wash

I'm kind of torn watching this. On the one hand, Kelly pretty obviously helps Benson into the goalie (Benson cut sharply, but in doing so was off balance, so it didn't take much of a push to make him lose the balance he still had), so I don't think it should be blown dead until the Avs gain possession.

On the other hand, I've played goalie for a long time, and I would absolutely hate it if players were allowed to shoot pucks at me while I'm in a vulnerable position and unable to recover due to the pain.

But on my third hand, if they blow the play dead, they set a precedent that could allow for goalies to dive in order to relieve pressure in their own zone.

Because of all of this, I don't know what the rule should be, but the refs made the right call for what the rule is.

If the puck makes it out to the point where a slap shot could be zoinked at goalie then yeah..stop it. But a puck behind the net and wrap around isn't going to injure a goalie who is already down

Colorado players pushes Buffalo player who loses his balance then lands on goalies leg then said player team scores...yea good call for sure. Not sure why Buffalo should be penalized in their offensive zone when the injury never happens if he is not shoved into the goalie.

If Wedgewood was closer to the post on the wrap around and it was a net scramble/pile up, it would have been a disaster.

I mean in this case I’d go with the sounds coming from the guy or the fact that he was on his back unable to move, inside the net for 7 seconds.

It really isn't:

Unless your interpretation of "serious injury" is a player literally dying on the ice, that's a f***ing green light for pests running into goalies. Just throw yourself into a goalie after a crosscheck, it won't be whistled down.

And no, I'm not blaming the Buffalo player on this one, it was obviously just on Kelly of the Avs.
It is the correct call according to the rules.

Yeah, this is about where I came down on the matter.

It’s a case where there’s really not a possible call that would satisfy every angle on the play. By the nature of what happened the ref will be screwing one team or the other, no matter what.

I think I’m about 51% on the side of preferring a whistle there, given that the injury was clearly accidental (because no D would do that to his goalie on purpose) and the resulting play didn’t exactly produce a “hockey goal”. If that sequence had led to anything other than a clean wraparound it could have been even worse… imagine a point shot sneaking up underneath Wedgewood’s mask while he’s in that prone position. So I’d like to see a whistle there, but I don’t blame the ref at all for the way he judged it in the moment.

Love how serious NHL promotes safety, then does stuff like this.

Wasn't goalie interference, but play should've been whistled dead for serious injury, as the NHL rulebook allows. Even dumber decision by Bedner to challenge it.

Shades of Calvert getting the puck in the head, bleeds from the head, and Vancouver scores cause no whistle.
A leg injury can be a variety of things...it's not like Wedgewood was hit in the throat with a pick or skate. What is deemed as a "serious injury"? That interpretation is up to the refs not the fans.

I don't think anyone is arguing it's goalie interference. Whistle should've gone for an injury. It's not like it would've been a scoring chance had Wedgewood not been injured, the puck was behind the net.
