My dad is well versed in Philly sports. He's familiar with every roster, or at least with the core pieces that drive each roster. I told him they traded Laughton and he says "who?" I explained who he is, and he said that the Flyers putting so much heavy value on a guy that casual fans wouldn't even know after years is a bad sign.

If you're wondering how the non-zealous fan feels.

I remember pointing out MacEwen at one point after his time in Philly (probably during an AHL game) and my dad genuinely had no idea who he was. Obviously not as long term of a guy as Laughton but the media and broadcast crew still slobbered over him pretty hard

He's obviously not in the Giroux, Richards, Carter tier. It's actually pretty hard to find a comparison because I can't think of many middle 6 players who played this long for the Flyers. At least in the last 30 years or so.
I guess Simmonds and Coburn are the closest.

Raffl really... only other guy who was not a firm top 6/4 guy to play 500+ games since Brown left the team in 1995.

Even if you take it down to 400 the only other such players since 1990 are Read and Derrick Smith.

Heck, all-time that list (400+ games for the Flyers while being almost exclusively bottom six/bottom pair the whole time) is pretty much:

Scott Laughton (2012-2025)
Michael Raffl (2013-2021)
Matt Read (2011-2018)
Dave Brown (1982-1995)
Derrick Smith (1984-1991)
Bob Kelly (1970-1980)
Don Saleski (1971-1979)

He's definitely unique. What depth guy has lasted with the same team for close to 13 years? And unless you happen to be catching games during his annual hot streak it's easy for him to be invisible otherwise

The amount of value that the Flyers placed on Laughton in terms of what they felt he meant to their team, is a symptom of the disease that infects the Flyers organization. An example of how they don't know what to value and how you actually build a team. He is not and has never been a foundational player. He is a role player and has always been a role player.

It's hard to even think of anything comparable even in the NHL.

Adam Lowry seem like a same situation. Other than that maybe sissons with preds is half way there.

Sure there was some pylon on defense. Maybe Chris Phillips even wore A and was culture king.

Both players have value if you're a contending team. If not, not so much to your team. The Flyers actually believe that you can build a winning culture without actually winning. They put culture and intangibles (cart) before elite and high level talent (horse)

Wouldn't it be hilarious if after years of the Flyers pumping up his tires, he goes to another team, becomes a healthy scratch and is then out of the league in two years?

And I know the Flyers would scoop him up in a heartbeat, but I have to hope the management team miraculously gets nuked from orbit by then.

The only comparable I have, and obviously he's a materially better player than Laughton, but from the perspective of "if you aren't part of the team, he seems like just a guy, but they treat him like the heart and soul of the roster without whom everything falls apart" is Dustin Brown.

Yeah he definitely has that adoration from LA but at one point he was at least A Thing
