Now I know this thread is early but I am chrious to what you think Scott Hartnell's value will be st the deadline? Reason being is he has a NMC and the expansion draft is coming and as of now he would be a guy that they would be forced to protect.

So with that in mind what's his value if the jackets are out of it?

Because I think whoever gets him is going to get him a little cheaper than they normally would for a 25 goal top 6 forward

I always felt Calgsry would be a good fit on a line with Monahan and Johnny Hockey

Auto correct is not doing you any favors. More to the point; hartnell probably garners a 2nd and a meh non roster depth guy, dependent on if there is any retention or if there is other pieces involved. Also, that's how I see him rn, if hart's has an injury plagued season or dogs it... well, he garners less.

If Buffalo is in the playoff hunt as a bottom feeder like I personally think they will be I'd do a 2nd or find a prospect that appealed such as Baptiste etc. Basically not a grade A return but respectable enough. Think he'd do wonders for any playoff team let alone such a young one potentially lacking real size in their top 6.

Isn't he currently your #3 prospect since a lot of your guys are graduated

I doubt any team would really want to trade for him and be forced to protect him (unless NMC is auto-waived in any potential trade?).

He might be a decent guy to help in a playoff run, but no one wants the length of the deal.

He's buried behind Bailey, Fasching, Nylander for sure and possibly Carrier and E-Rod as well who will likely be equally close in talent to him as 3rd line wing depth. If a center prospect along the lines of Cornel+ was of more interest I wouldn't bat an eye either. I may be in the minority but I don't see a long term spot for Baptiste not that it's a knock on him in any way as he can likely be a solid middle six winger who can slot on anything but a top line in a pinch depending on team depth.

I have to think every playoff team with anything resembling cap space would bid on Hartnell in some capacity and I realize my offers may come up short. I'd rather save and utilize assets on a #2 dman anyways but in the perfect scenario Buffalo is sitting like 7th and can add Hartnell for Baptiste and a plus and deal their 1st and a plus for a worthwhile defender.

Would you really want to protect Hartnell though?

If it meant infusing our young core with a playoff run this year the cost may be worth it. We'd potentially be exposing the likes of Ennis and Kane if we did so. I like Ennis...own a jersey but would be fine with sacrificing his scrambled egg brain and right now Kane for Hartnell is a fine swap for us.

Hartnell's NMC and continuing contract is not a good recipe for a TDL deal.

You need a contender with an open protection slot for a forward, who are also happy to have Hartnell on their books till his 37th birthday.

I thought last year it made sense for Nashville to get him, but then they would be in trouble with the ED.

I wonder if they would package a prospect like Sonny Milano with Hartnell only because there was a report Sonny Milano was traded at the draft so it wasn't that long ago they were willing to move him.

Maybe it's not Milano but I wonder if they package a prospect or pick with Hartnell to move that NMC

Why the hell would they do that? If they really HAD to trade him (they don't, so the whole discussion is rather moot) they could basically just give him away for a pick.

They don't have to deal Milano but ya they pretty much HAVE to deal Hartnell because you can only protect 8 guys and guys with NMC HAVE to be protected and the jackets have 5 NMC which means 5 of their spots are taken up

Teams know that so I doubt Hartnell gets a good deal.

Huh 8? What happened to 7/3/1?

I don't know why everyone (non-CBJ fans/media) assumes that Columbus will want to protect Jack Johnson. Saad/Dubi/Harts/Clarkson (ugh)/Jenner/Wennberg/Foligno with Jones/Murray/Savard and Bob.

Except players can be asked to waive their NMC's. And everyone knows Clarkson will do so.

Columbus currently is going to protect at forward:
Dubinsky
Foligno
Hartnell
Saad
Wennberg
Jenner
Atkinson

That exposes who... Karlsson? Calvert? Nothing all that impressive.

And no, 7/3/1 can still be protected.
