That’s why his advice sounds sketchy, essentially he’s telling players to go at it alone, like dude what? You’re risking millions and millions of dollars taking his advice.
Really do t think there's any NHL players scanning these boards looking for substance abuse help, so no millions involved

I think what he's saying is the NHL's program is more focused on rehabilitating the player than the person and if you seriously need help it's probably not going to provide it. Mental health is frequently treated like one size fits all and I would not be even a little shocked if that was 10x in the NHL's program

He didn't say that and the union would always try to get the best service for their members -- it comes out of the pockets of the employer, after all.

Darling's clearly and unquestionably critical of the structure of the PA Assistance Program which leverages your existing contract against your completion of the program. Which is the trade-off you get when you break your contract with substance abuse and are given a chance to keep it.

ding ding ding

It doesn't have to be a criticism of Darling either, but he clearly didn't jive with the structure of the program and it was upsetting for him. The thing is, they will always leverage your contract against your participation in the structure -- that's the whole deal! Otherwise your contract is terminated for breach.

People say stupid things on podcasts.

This is just standard union stuff. They have to offer you treatment, but always remember that offering treatment is the first or second step a company will take when building a case to fire you.

They will tell you the goal is for you to ‘get healthy’, but really they just want to schedule a piss test you can’t make it to so they can fire you under the CBA

I’ve been on the management side of this transaction a few times. The goal is to remove you. It’s up to you to not let that happen.

He looks terrible.

I would take it with a grain of salt since it's common for people who struggle with substances to fight the system and take issue with the structure.
He's a Blackhawks Studio Analyst, which I doubt he'd be doing if he wasn't clean.

I'm wondering if this is a hole in having a CBA because they are an exception to a lot of workplace laws. Like if you take outside treatment when the rules say you have to take one of their own.

Is there a sport that's known for alcoholics like hockey traditionally has been? At least up till the 70's.

Darling looks f***ing hammered. Is he just mad because it didn't work for him? 🤔

Yeah, no one has ever worked with a drug or alcohol problem before. Completely unheard of.

Yes and nobody that wears a hat and has tattoos could ever be anything but "f***ing hammered". Completely unheard of that people ever get clean.

Conclusive statement is conclusory.

Thanks for clearing up that it's unfounded.
It was a dumb question, you got a dumb answer. If I said he looked hammered in the video, and you have access to said video, it would stand to reason that all you need to do is watch the video.

And of course it's unfounded, I wasn't with him. I gave an opinion on how he looked. I wasn't trying to convince anyone he's a drunk.

Clear enough yet?

What's clear is you made a ridiculous statement and exposed your ignorance to who Darling is, his story and what he's overcome in his life. Ignorance is not something to be proud of.

I said he looked terrible, which he does. He could just have allergies I suppose. A bit puffy and in need of some visine.

I'm not really sure what to think. On the one hand it's entirely plausible... but on the other hand, he's the only player to say this, he's been retired for 5+ years, and I think it's extremely irresponsible to tell players (kids) that if they have a drug, depression, substance issue don't tell your team or teammate and try to work it out on your own instead of the resources made available to you?

Not being drunk at work counts as being drunk at work. TF?

This sounds like something a sanctimonious politician would say the week before he gets arrested for DUI.
In some cases, people who are hungover are still drunk.

But go ahead and keep showing to work hungover. See how well that goes for you. (I just mean the royal you, not you specifically)
