Scott Arniel named Winnipeg Jets head coach

Looking at the Hockeyviz coaching impact charts, and Davis Payne was a strong head coach, and he was also a very bad head coach the next season. Illustrates how difficult it is to fully evaluate a coach's impact when teams are in flux and not very talented...

lol, this is from like 15 years ago. how meaningful is this or have any sort of bearing in 2024 when he is an Assistant.

The Calder Cup Final was in 2008....how many NHLers are still in the league form 2008? Lol

He's got a losing record as a head coach in the NHL. His assistant coach accolades don't take away from the fact he has been an awful head coach.

There is a reason CBJ fans are laughing at us.
He got locked out of a room in Columbus. That's impressive for only a season and a half!

So far I like what I've seen from Arniel, even though it's extremely early to say so. The solid defensive play looks to have been maintained and the things that needed improving (THE POWER PLAY) have improved so far.

I'm optimistic, but again it's too early to say anything otherwise.

Yup, took all the best parts of the bones tenure and improved everywhere else so far. I have some crow to eat, I was wanting Mr Outside hire

Yup it's a long season and this team has shown a propensity to fade as the season gets tougher.

Of course the only season that really matters is the playoffs. I'll reserve judgement after the cup is awarded
The one big change I've noticed that Arniel has made from Bone's system is that they're backing off into a 1-2-2 in the neutral zone when they turn the puck over in the offensive zone instead of working like madmen trying to get the puck back

I'm hoping that will preserve some energy and they won't fade as hard as the season rolls on as they did the couple of years under Bones

Good observation. I had just noticed there was a lot more 1-2-2 last night.

I remember when Maurice left some Jets analytics heros on Twitter were saying they shouldn't hire Arniel and they should hire Pascal Vincent. Same guys were saying to blow it up.

I feel your statement, but in his defense at what point is it not the coaches but the players that are the problem... Too easy to lay the blame at the feet of coaches sometimes.

Scott Arniel has to be strongly considered for the Jack Adams

Man went from being a Columbus cast off to learning and growing as a coach for over a decade to leading a team to a league leading total, a team that has never won a presidents trophy as any iteration of the franchise (1.0 or 2.0) in the nhl

Many of us, myself including were doubters. I was on the milder side because I thought did well in Bones’ absence years prior but others were louder in their displeasure.

I am so happy he has proven any and all doubters everywhere on any spectrum wrong and well earned

He represents the city and organization proud, having been a key 1.0 player, Moose player and coach, set roots in the city and made it his off season home even when he had no reason to beyond loyalty to his wife

Now he’s done what no other coach including the much loved cup winning Paul Maurice or highly regarded Rick Bowness could do with quality Jets teams and lead them to a Presidents trophy

Hopefully there’s more silverware he can bring the organization and global Jets fandom yet

But at the very least give the man a vote for the Jack Adams!

And I think he did it in good part by coaching the team using their strengths, not trying to mould them into something that he wanted.
He allowed them to be creative, but still defensively responsible. He brought in special teamcoaches that were far more creative than their predecessors.
He allowed them to pressure the puck which they were already really good at when they were allowed to.
And most importantly, he listened to all of us who had been screaming for them to do something like that for years. :)

I imagine this is how a banana must feel.

It waits its entire life, just waiting to be picked from the tree. As it grows up, it sees all the older bananas get picked. Brother Banana, Sister Banana, and the whole Banana Brood goes before them, and the banana is hopeful to see what happens when it's finally their day to be picked.

It's only when they are picked that they realize that they're simply going to be chopped up to used in a delicious peanut butter and banana sandwich. Their disappointment must surely be immeasurable; their day is ruined.

That's a pretty solid metaphor for how I'm feeling about this coaching hire. In fact, I don't think it is humanly possible to describe it any better.
I nominate this for HFJets post of rhe season 😃

Listened to Scott's interview on Winnipeg Sports talk radio and I thought he did a good job. Talked about his journey, what has changed about the league, and more importantly about himself since his last shot. Very open and candid.

I’ll be cheering for him and I guess we shall see how it plays out.

Cringes as he looks back to May for his reaction to the hiring of owners friend, and career assistant, as the new head coach of his beloved Jets. Sigh of relief as I seemed more open minded than I remember.

Yes, absolutely. I realize that many pundits assess Improvement in team record the previous year to the current year, and this might weaken his case, but he is obviously a great coach when he's got the horses.

With the CBJ squad he had almost nothing to work with.
