Confirmed with Link: Scott Arniel named Winnipeg Jets head coach

I don't think the org sees the team as a playoff no show
I think they feel they were simply out skilled and and a 10% offseason improvement should fill that gap

They were a lot more than 10% behind the Avs in the PO after sweeping them in the regular season.

And where do they see any 10% improvement coming from?

You don't have any choice.

Kidding aside, he's a good fit for the org and the Jets should compete well again in the reg season (assuming they continue with the same game plan).

 I mean I'll wait and see before forming an opinion of him as a coach.
I can't hire or fire but I can like or dislike.

Scott did have the team looking strong in the fall when Rick was away.
I remember we had our last little losing skid before the dominant stretch of Nov/Dec began when Bones came back. Most fans had that moment of hesitation... maybe Scott should be the coach?

I hope they can hire someone to add to the coaching staff to boost the areas we were weak in.

I'm being sarcastic - those were the numbers our GM and number one center were throwing around in their post season comments.

I know Helly gets blamed but seriously Avs average 37 shots per game against him meanwhile the Avs couldn't even average 26 shots per game on the Stars.
Avs would probably still be playing now if they could get 37 shots on net every game against Dallas.
I understand we got thoroughly outplayed I'm not saying we didn't. What i want to see at least for 1 game is the best goalie in the league to stand on his head and steal us a game . Who knows what could happen in a short series if Helly steals a game.

On the bright side:

Scott seems like a good guy. He is a career assistant coach so he is well aware that this is his one and only shot to prove the world wrong so motivation shouldn’t be a problem. He was an assistant on a 110 point team and that was a really good run up until the playoffs.

On the less bright side:

This has the optics of being a loyalty hire two years in the making directed from the owner who already has a rep of being too loyal and soft on everyone except the fans who aren’t buying tickets.

If Scott fails, I don’t see Mark green lighting his termination. How bad would it have to get?

I am a Jets fan so I will hope for the best but I am more about the journey these days anyways. It’s my firm belief based on the Jets losing the last 4 games in a row in 5 of their 6 playoff seasons this core is not built for playoff hockey. My journey is more about watching games for entertainment value without any expectations of bright shinny objects that are silver with a cup or bowl on top. The coaching choice viewed through my new glasses doesn’t carry as much weight as it once did.

I doubt Scott will start out by firing any of his assistants but we’ll see. If the organization is happy with last seasons results (and I believe they are) then why would they change coaches? Chevy has said before (after the Vegas series) their goal is to get into the playoffs and then anything can happen and it appears that is their legit standard for success.

Both Arniel and Lauer were hired prior to the 2022-23 season. The previous season the Jets ranked 17th on the PP and 29th on the PK, definitely not stellar. With Arniel in charge of the PK, the Jets in 2022/23, improved to 7th (very good) while Lauer's PP regressed to 23rd (hmmm). This past season, and I'm assuming they had the same responsibilities, the Jets PK dropped to 21st while the PP came in at 22nd. Any thoughts on what might have happened with the PK? (different players, different system implemented by Arniel?) As for the PP, given that Lauer hasn't had success with it with other teams......

I’m not even sure it matters who coaches this team. The core has proven year after year it can’t handle the playoffs. The hope has to be that this next wave of prospects can bring something that Scheifele, Connor, Ehlers, Morrissey and Helly haven’t been able to. I have no real issue with Arniel, but this roster needs a lot of help.

i have no qualified opinion on if Arniel is good or bad. i think his record in CBJ from 15 years ago for a shit organization barely qualifies what he is in 2024, & you can probably say the same about about his AHL finals appearance from nearly 20 years ago. but this move was telegraphed 2-years ago, and i think the unseriousness of their actual search plus the absolute lack of Arniel demand anywhere just further compounds this. no one should really be shocked he's the coach. anyway, hopefully he leads us to a big PO run & cup next year.

I believe he was in charge of Washington's PK as well and they finished 24th, 5th, 6th and 12th in his 4 years. So mostly very good. I'm willing to give that a mulligan as Scott has a track record of running a good PK. The PP though hasn't ever been great under Lauer so I'd be looking for someone new there.

With Waddell taking over in Columbus, I wonder if Pascal Vincent pops free. He has one year left on contract. Would be a perfect replacement for Arniel’s spot that’s now open.

This seems like a Friday News Dump

I see a lot of "TNSE, Chipman, etc, too loyal, Arneil was hired specifically to take over from Bones one day, all pre-ordained, etc, etc". Perhaps it's just the age-old dilemma the Jets organization face: it's very difficult to attract top quality guys here, be it players or coaches. You think Trotz would've chosen -40°C winters, potholes, high taxes, plus the scrutiny of the "home town boy comes home" situation? As opposed to being the Preds GM, with an organization & city he already knows & likes, without the high taxes & harsh winters? None of us really knows what goes on behind the scenes, so the above is obviously uninformed speculation. And whether the outsiders perception of Winnipeg is right or wrong, that perception exists, and we're sometimes forced to overpay to get guys here (hello, Nate Schmidt, etc). I'm sure it's the same with coaches. I'm not trying to give Chipman a pass, as TSNE has sh:t the bed many times, as we all know. But sometimes we get who we get & we have to make the best of it. If they fire Lauer & hire some assistants with innovative PK/PP ideas, then I'm willing to give Arneil a chance. And maybe Arneil's approach will be different & it might take some time to get things in gear. So the next person who immediately says "fire Arneil" if we lose the 1st game of the season might want to bear that in mind. Just my $0.02 worth.

Agree that this was always the plan and I'm willing to hive him a try as HC. It will be a seamless transition, systems-wise and he appears to have a good relationship with the players. Here is how he differs from Bones, IMO:

1) He is 61, but a young 61 and will hopefully have much more resiliency over a long season, in every sense of the word
2) My contact with him has been fairly limited, but my impression is that he listens and assimilates new ideas well. Maybe this is personality, maybe it's all his years as an assistant, or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. The point is that no coach has all the answers and it is essential for any successful HC to be open to new ideas. I don't think his predecessor did that very well.
3) Relatedly, he needs to surround himself with a new coaching team, at the very least replacing Lauer. I would also love to see him have a more established and respected analytics advisor. (*Please ignore this last comment if you vehemently disagree, rather than turning it into another petty fight)

I'm actually less worried about coaching at this point than I am about the roster. The Jets don't have the same high-end talent/prospect pool they once did and have gambled away a number of high draft picks. If they lose Ehlers in the off-season for a less talented player (and futures) I would not be surprised if they took a step back from their over-performance this season.

My suggestions are the Mona Lisa, 14 bottles of water, the Sea Bears logo, or Marilyn Monroe.

Let’s get that poll cracking.
@surixon arguments about perfetti would be much more compelling if they were read in this voice....
