every year its the same, playoffs come around and everyones like "MACKINNON IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE ACTUALLY", then the next season comes around and McDavid outscores him by 50 and people pipe down, then the playoffs start again and its Mac > Mc all over again.

Not sure how to interpret your response if directed at me - I've always preferred Mackinnon.

I thought this would be the first issue fixed by Gallant at camp. I was very wrong.

Each of the top two D pairs has one subpar puck mover -- Lindgren and Trouba. Miller should improve. But it takes two to tango: our forwards are inconsistent in helping the D and moving it up ice shift by shift much less period by period. Schneider should get better, and if his partner will be Jones, that should improve things. But the real problem is the support from the forwards.

Even Doc has called out ESPN for their circus.

It’s kind of similar to arguing that Panarin’s regular season production/cap hit would be better suited going to guys who play a playoff style and cost less. 100 points is nice, but 75 or 80 for significantly less still gets us to the playoffs and then having guys who step up and embrace the physicality of the playoffs and necessity of going to the tough areas of the ice yield better results. Points in the regular season only matter in so far as do you make the playoffs or not?

McDavid had 1.54 points per game this season. MacKinnon had 1.35; over the last 5 years McDavid is 1st in the league at 1.47 points per game. MacKinnon is 5th with 1.18 points per game.

It’s a gap of .19-.29 points per game, depending on the year. Split the difference and call it .25 points per game, it’s 1 more point for every 4 games played or about 20 points per 82 games. Going back to my above argument, that’s the same as the difference between Panarin and an 80 point player would be.

I probably take the more complete player (especially these past 5 years where Mack has earned 6.3M and McD has earned 12M). It’s been 5 years since McDavid signed that contract. Mack is just expiring now on a 6.3M contract. Even at 10M I take Mack over McD at 12M most likely. Same argument for a slightly less productive but more complete, higher compete level player vs Panarin.

People acting like we didn't spank Tampa and make them look like complete chumps in game 1 too. Ditto Toronto.

You almost have to think their luck will run out at some point but we'll see. They are elite at clamping down and strangling the shit out of teams by all means necessary (legal or not) once they are on their heels a bit.

This series is going 6+ for sure

If nothing else the refs will put away their whistles at some point, and adjust as needed with some make up calls. We've seen that song and dance first hand. I hope the Avs take it, it would be good for game to get away from the interference fest.

Yep. Too static, I guess it's a by product from the way we defend the d-zone. The forwards need to keep their feet moving in support and also to be open on the other side for breakouts. Support is an issue in the o-zone as well. The Avs are forechecking higher up and with a tighter forward group than we are. Maybe riskier defensively but also more dangerous offensively and again it keeps their feet moving and speed up. I don't think we are slow as a team, we just often play slow which is different.

Even last night, the game was officiated differently as it went on. Tampa just interferes and obstructs constantly that the refs just look at it as normal. Colorado was not entering the zone anywhere as easily in the third period as they were in the first.

I mean the amount of interference tampa got away with last night was impressive.
Tampa is the king of interfering without getting called for it.

I usually take a round off after the Rangers are done. Might watch when the elimination games begin in this round but still recharging from a very long and productive season.

I agree with you on most things but this is implying that McDavid didn’t show up in the playoffs. The dude crushed the playoffs.

McDavid is the best forward in the league and it’s not close.

Yeah I got away from the point a bit when focusing on Panarin not showing up in the playoffs, and didn’t mean to imply McDavid didn’t. And while I do feel McDavid probably is the best forward in the league, I guess my point was only that I feel it is a bit closer than it appears, with a guy like MacKinnon averaging 20 less points per 82 games, but being an overall more complete player at half the cap hit these past 5 years. 95 points from a 6.3M 1C or 120 points from a 12M 1C. MacKinnon is due for a new contract, but for the last 5 years, that 5.7M difference in cap hit is pretty huge.

Then I got the waters muddy by using that as a jumping off point to say that, with Panarin at the second highest cap hit, after McD, I’d similarly take a guy who scored 20 less points but did show up in the playoffs, at a lesser cap hit, but I definitely didn’t mean to imply McDavid hadn’t shown up.

No doubt about the contract. Silver lining for us is that we may end up in a similar situation if Laf and Kakko keep taking their time breaking out.
