As a contending team you'd give a King's ransom for a goalie who's never won a game in this league? That would be very bold. Not saying Thornton won't be good but he's never done it. There are several examples of really good goalies struggling in their first year in the OHL. Look at Kari Piiroinen in Windsor last year. He's a really good goalie, as we saw in the WJ but really struggled in year 1 in WSR despite being on a pretty good WSR team. And not saying that'll happen to Thornton, but the point is that it happens and you're going to trade a ton for someone you've never seen do it before? I was talking to
@StingUpdates about this earlier today. It will come down to whether or not the Sting brass cares about "doing right" by Thornton. If they don't and are willing to keep him as the backup until the deadline, then they can force 1 team to pony up and out bid the others. But if Thornton's agent starts asking for a trade because Gaudreau is obviously playing all the time, and the Sting brass feels like they need to do it to give him a chance to play now, I think it will be far less in return than people are assuming it would be.
