Value of: Sami Vatanen

From the Ducks view.....you can't have too many NHL defencemen. And look at the Ducks LW, JVR isn't really that needed.

Can we have presidential executive order or something. No JVR trades to Ducks. No Tanev trades to Leafs.
Amend that to trade talks.....i am fine with an actual trade of Tanev to Toronto....just sick of talking about it....

With the addition of PK to the Devils, is Vats available for a trade? I know many Devils fans say that they are ok with him being dealt now and are coming up with trade scenerios.

Last year of his contract next season at about 4.8 mill.

Would many teams be interested??

This is not a guy I'd want to see given a big/term deal by Devils. So I would like to see what marjet is. Also open to waiting on deadline and if not looking godo at that point def deal him when he would prob draw alot of interest.

2 years ago why not just start a new thread

Anyways, I’d do Kessel for Vats and a draft pick or prospect.

I’m definitely the camp Pitt needs to shuffle their D so trading for Vats and then trading Schultz for a forward would be ideal for the Pens I think.

I would only want to trade Vatanen for an equivalent LHD.

The Devils defense, even with the addition of Subban and likely Ty Smith, is still pretty weak comparatively. They are in no position to be trading away talent at that position, regardless of what side they play on.

Vatanen + Wood for Fowler?

I like Vatanen and would be open to re-signing him, but with Subban & Severson locked up for a while on the right-hand side, i’d definitely be willing to move him for a comparable LHD.

Otherwise I assume someone is going to end up playing on their off side, since Subban, Severson and Vatanen are all top 4 guys.

Though what would be an equivalent defenceman?

He's in a similar boat as Sekera here in Edmonton, except Vatanen is only a year away from UFA. Russell would also be another comparable if you're wanting a cheaper and more reliable option (as in know what you're going to get... RE: a smooth skating #4/5, who good at covering for a risky partner or being a decent secondary defensive defenceman).

I'd say Kris would be a better fit with NJ, as his "always be the safety net" approach would likely go well with someone like Subban, Severson, or Smith. Only issue is I don't see him waiving his NTC to leave Western Canada.

Basically, with the right partner I'd have no worries playing Russell in the top 4. Sekera on the other hand, I'd trust to be a better all-round guy, but I'd have some concern tossing larger minutes/responsibility at him and expecting him to stay healthy.

Vatanen is a 28 year old #3 defenseman in his prime who averages 35-40 points a season and can both PP and PK.

No interest in either of those players

Ducks could use Vats back(we could use Theodore way more IMO), but we need Fowler a lot more.

Most aggravating thing about our situation is at one point we had Vatanen, Theodore, and Montour; now none of them. Montour and Vats never showed the ability to consistently QB our PP which was frustrating. Theodore would do wonders there. I like Vats, but we need Fowler way more.

Req return is top 4 LD with above average size that can clear the crease and play PK. Devs can add.

Neither got very long to work on getting better though either. Without immediate success the spot was given back to Fowler, who ironically isn't noticeably better than either and has a worse shot

Vatanen would be a good target for Oilers if they can resign him. Russell or Sekera don't have much trade value, for even 1-year of Vatanen. Maybe Caleb Jones.

I'd bite on something around Jones, or also Bear/Benning, though I don't think a RHD is as interesting for NJ.

With the Oil's contract situation on defence (Sekera and Russell signed for 2 more years, and Bouchard and Samorukov on their way up, with an ETA of about that time), I don't see a long term spot for any of those 3. So turning one of the them into an upgrade for the current defence, even if it's only for a season, would be a good fit.

Agree wholeheartedly with this.

Wouldn't want to see Sami moved unless a top 4 LHD is coming back. Can't afford to lose a player of his ilk for anything less.

Not trading Vatanen for a straight downgrade, not nearly deep enough on defence to do that, we'd be better off just keeping him. We'd need a comparable (top 4) left-handed defenceman in return, so unless we can package Vatanen+ for Klefbom or Nurse I don't see a realistic deal with Edmonton; Sekera & Russell are simply too old and have too many question marks surrounding them.

I know that Edmonton could use some cap relief and cheap talent on the wings to pair with McDavid, Draisaitl & RNH. A trade I proposed on the Devils board was Nurse + Gagner (cap dump) for Vatanen (50% retained) & Wood. We'd certainly be willing to make other pieces (Boqvist, Zacha, picks) available in a trade for Nurse too since he's exactly what we need. Wood is signed to a very team friendly deal for 3 more years (2.75m per) and Vatanen is a very capable top 4 RHD who'd be cheap for this season until he needs to be re-signed for a modest raise at the end of next year, probably somewhere in the range of 5.5-6m if I had to guess. Plus it saves Edmonton almost 1.5m against this years cap to add some more flexibility in UFA.

No idea the Oilers would have any interest in that though, just something that came to mind as potentially being workable when I heard Nurse was potentially available.

Sorry to say, but that’s horrific for Edmonton. Neither Wood, nor Vatanen have value anywhere in near a 24 YO defenceman that outscored the two of them combined, and adding on other secondary pieces wouldn't move the needle any closer. Significantly downgrading the defence, and swapping 3rd liners, all for 1.5 mil in cap savings or depth pieces is a no go.

Put it this way, would you do that deal for Severson?
