Sorry to say, but that’s horrific for Edmonton. Neither Wood, nor Vatanen have value anywhere in near a 24 YO defenceman that outscored the two of them combined, and adding on other secondary pieces wouldn't move the needle any closer. Significantly downgrading the defence, and swapping 3rd liners, all for 1.5 mil in cap savings or depth pieces is a no go.

Put it this way, would you do that deal for Severson?

Funny old world, innit. Just about the whole fanbase thought Vatanen was expendable because we had Theo and Montour.

Then we traded Theo. Then we traded Montour. Still not entirely sure why.

Jake Muzzin from Toronto seems like an ideal situation, personally. Devils can retain salary on Vatanen to make it work for the leafs, but age, term, money, ability...all seem comparable (or close enough). TOR need RD and NJ needs LD.

The Leafs org is quite happy with Muzzin, though. There is a lack of righties on the blueline, it's true. But I doubt they would be willing to move Muzzin just because the guy coming back is a righty. He's one of the only guys with grit on the roster.

A trade I proposed on the Devils board was Nurse + Gagner (cap dump) for Vatanen (50% retained) & Wood.

Either one of Miles Wood or Sam Steel are necessary components to team up with Cody Glass and Mark Stone to create a spectacular gimmick line.

Severson is much younger and is signed longterm for a cheap contract. I have no interest in moving him
