Player Discussion Sam Colangelo

I’m all for sending the kids down to help SD make a playoff push if they can’t do it in Anaheim. I think there is value in playoff type games at the AHL level, even though kids like Colangelo have already “felt it” at the international or college level, I “feel” like the pro AHL level is still a completely different beast.
Maybe I don’t understand the AHL playoff system but it looks to me like SD has about the same chance of getting to the playoffs as the Ducks do. Which is to say a very low probability. Am I missing something?

Interesting to note that both of the Ducks college success stories - colangelo and Lacombe - played 4 years in college. Hopefully that translates to Moore as well.
Interesting to note for sure, but also makes sense. 22 - 23 year old making the jump from NCAA to AHL / NHL a little easier than 19-20 year old going from OHL / WHL to AHL / NHL.

I think a mix of NCAA / Canadian leagues / European (and their 4 years to sign and develop) is kinda ideal for building organizational depth. A good way to build for a never ending influx of talent for the first 5-7 years of a rebuild.

Then you kinda sell those assets for win now pcs, whether players or picks and it’s tough to keep the cupboard full, and gotta hit on some swings later on the draft.

Him transferring to Western Michigan may be one of the most career savvy moves in recent Ducks history. Makes you wonder what his career would have been like if he went there from the start of his NCAA career.

If CHLers start going to NCAA following draft year and I was Porter Martone I would already be enrolled in W. Mich.
That new rule really makes things interesting.

Is there a time deadline where they have to commit to a NCAA school? I could see one or more of the higher picks being encouraged by their drafted team to play a year or two of NCAA as a step up from the CHL with the option of allowing them to go to the AHL/NHL after a year in school.

They gotta finish 7th or better. Currently sit at 9th.

Thanks. Everything was as I thought it was. So 5 points out but the the teams ahead of them have 1-3 games in hand. Gulls only have 16 games left. Anything is possible I guess but I’d keep all the current NHL guys up until they demonstrate that they don’t belong up.

With the newfound offense sparked by putting Colangelo on a line with offensive talent with Mac and Cutter, I'd prefer to continue to let that trio develop their play together and chemistry. If they continue to be strong and produce offensively for the rest of the season, then that's one set scoring line for us next year. Establishing our NHL future carries higher importance to me.

If the Gulls do make the playoffs, then it's still possible for Colangelo and other youth prospects to join them in the post-season. The Ducks last regular season game is April 16th. The Gulls last regular season game is April 19th. In the Gulls last 10 games, they are 8-1-0-1 (17 pts) with 16 games left to play. San Diego seems to be winning plenty of games now even without Colangelo and Harkins. There is also a possibility that LD Dionicio returns to the AHL if his U20 Biel playoffs is cut short. They are down 1-2 in a five game series.

It's possible to do both, keep the kids in the NHL and participate in the AHL playoffs.

I don’t have a source but I read that their AHL eligibility is based on where they played in their draft year. So if they are drafted as a CHL player they still can’t go to the AHL until they have aged out of the CHL.

They better be careful with a rule like that. That could encourage a LOT of kinds to start their career in the CHL and then transfer to the NCAA for their draft year, thereby leaving even a year sooner.

I know he's looked pretty good but just dawning on my that he played at a 25 goal pace under a terrible coach who was giving him 4th line minutes for a sizable chunk of his time here.

Sucks he's not Calder eligible next year, he looks pretty legit.

I like him a lot and he's a big part of what I'll be looking forward to over the summer. Fingers crossed he's for real. That said, he was shooting almost 25%. He and Leo (17%) are two guys I'd most expect to convert less often next season.

Personally, I'm still riding the high of firing Cronin so I'm expecting them to double down by shooting 50% and 34% respectively.

Hopefully the next coach is able to institute a system or mindset that also raises the volume of shots/opportunities to mitigate a regression to the mean.

Sam might also just be a higher percentage guy as well, considering where he gets his goals from. Shot 15% with the gulls, which would have been second highest with Anaheim after Leo.
