First, it is a hypothetical.
Second, you are not accounting for the center we would get, and need.
Third, you are assuming we would pay Markov at 2x6. That is what he asked from the Habs. The Habs might not be able to afford him at that. My scenario would be a one year deal at 4.
Fourth, and most importantly, we would be better equipped to threepeat.
1. All of these are hypotheticals. It's a message board, not the Pens' front office.
2. Tom Kuhnhackl and the Pens 2019 3rd round pick to Vegas for Cody Eakin. Fits under Pens current cap structure, Eakin is much better offensively than he played last year and is strong on faceoffs and on the PK. He's also 26 and under contract the next three seasons.
3. You're assuming Markov would take a cut in both years and cap. How is that logical? Nowhere has it been published that Markov is willing to take less than 2 years and that he wants $6 million. Dropping to $5 million I could see in order for him to secure that second year, but not $4 million.
4. Markov is better offensively than Maatta but is actually worse defensively. Maatta does a better job at suppressing shots as evidenced by the HERO chart I posted earlier in this thread. Plus, Maatta has room to grow whereas the 38-year-old Markov is more likely to decline.
Also, the Pens can't worry just about a three-peat. Sure, that's the immediate goal. But they have to balance that with being in position to remain competitive long-term. Having to sign a major defensive piece when so many forwards are already having their contracts expire is not good asset management. If the Pens had a bunch of young defensemen close to being ready in the NHL, it'd be a different story, but they don't.
