Not a Sabres fan, so I don't have a fine understanding of what their org is planning, but it seems like they have plenty of project prospects and young players with upside. I feel like they'd be better off liquidating their three picks to gamble on a potential game breaker forward or one of the RHD you can only select with the first couple of picks in the draft.

Say the Sabres end up with the ~10th OA pick, the ~14th OA pick (from Vegas) and the ~30th OA pick (from Florida).

With which lottery teams could a deal be made?

EDIT:
Actually, why limit it to just moving up in the draft? Are there any deals the Sabres could make to move their picks for a young, NHL talent whose team is moving on?

For this to be realistic you almost have to take Buffalo's own pick out of the equation. They likely aren't shopping that.

I'd do both of the other picks in some combos for cirelli. One straight across with adds for gibson etc. This thread is fun but wont garner much actual interest from sabres fans.

I don't feel like the value is there for Adams to give up all three picks for Nemec, and certainly not for Jiricek, given Buffalo's current young D core, so it would probably have to be a top 3 pick, and even then, I have a feeling Adams would rather keep the three picks to collect prospects to compliment the current young core.

Out of the likely potential bottom five teams, I don't think Arizona, Montreal, or Philly would have interest in moving out of the top 3.

Seattle probably shouldn't either, although getting quantity to jump start the farm might interest Francis.

To me, it would somewhat make sense on paper for New Jersey, but then again, if they came to the draft table and a guy like Slafkovsky is there, I don't know if they could pass on drafting him.

Devils may consider trading their pick for Buffalos IF Slafkovsky Jiricek Nemec are all gone (very likely that Slaf is gone plus one of the two RHD ) . Makes sense for the Devils as they do not need a C and I think their next want would be Gauthier type player, amd would be nice to trade down and gain assets then take a player of need.
However , I am pretty sure Buffalo would only entertain trading up for one of the players that the Devils want as well in Slaf Jiricek Nemec. And Devils don’t trade the pick if one of those three are there.

To me, the tiers of this draft aren't clear enough to warrant paying a big premium to move up in the Top 10 unless you are gunning for 1/2oa.

I think they should keep their picks and keep building young talent and be patient with it. I might be willing to part with the Florida 1st for a quality starting goalie for the next couple years if there is one to be had. Other than that, their biggest need is a #1/2 center. I don't see a quality one getting moved without an overpayment on salary.

The draft is the right way to build and for the past few years the Sabres are finally showing success there. Stick with it. Not everyone is going to pan out.

If I were them, I'd go the other way. Package the FLA 1st with Buffalo's 2022 2nd, and 1 or two of next years 2nd to move up as high as possible.

I'm of a similar mind, though dealing one of the firsts and/or their own second is also on the table for roster improvements. Goalies ain't free, sadly.

Oh they need C? Maybe then the Devils move their pick if the RHD are gone and say Cooley is still there . That might interest the Sabres to swap picks with NJ and add an asset ? Swap plus Panthers 1st for NJ first and a 4th or 3rd ?

No. We’ll take swings at drafting two C with our picks.

Any Buffalo fan you see saying “we need a #1 or #2 C” is someone being impatient and thinking Krebs, Cozens, and Mittelstadt are finished products, and therefore need to upgraded on or a C in this draft is automatically better.

I generally agree. But I'm not convinced any of those three become a top 2 C - probably most optimistic about Krebs. That being said, give me as many lottery tickets as possible to help us make sure we are solid all the way up the middle. I definitely don't think anyone in this year's draft is certain to be better - though I'd feel awfully good about Wright if we were lucky enough.

in the NHL moving FL 1st (say 30) and BUF 2nd (40) might get them to 22-24.

but if teams feel there is a big drop from there to 30 thry won’t move Down.

in the NHL draft history top 30 are long time nhl players. Picks 35-45 tend to be nothing special players and half of them don’t make 50 nhl games.
MTL #2 for all 3 picks #9 + #16 + #32

Agree 10000 percent.

I get the sentiment and OP is right to at least mention it since we could use one of those picks to make some moves. With that said, I really really think we owe it to Krebs, Cozens, and Mitts to get a full-season next year. Krebs with Quinn is going to be fun, in particular.

We may draft another center because that's just smart in general, but I think we have to get those guys on the ice as much as possible and make sure of what we have with them.

Even if a first round pick only has a 25% chance to become an impact NHL player, the probability that at least one does is 1-(1-.25)**3 = 57% . If the chance is 35% instead of 25% for an individual player, then that probability rises to 72%, which is really good. Plus, there are other outcomes, e.g., 2 or 3 of them become impactful, you get a superstar that transcends just being "an impactful player", etc., which are harder to predict.

If I were the sabres I'd keep em all and not trade for an impact player, but --- that's just me.

Dumba + plus our compensatory 2nd for Florida's pick.
What compensatory pick do the Wild have? Comp for HC and GM was abolished. And you only get a complete pick if a first round pick doesn’t sign with you like Chicago got for Hayes and Rangers did for the Russian who died.

I don't really see it in terms of bundling 3 picks to move up in the draft "NFL Style".

Buffalo are surely going to be keeping their own 1st rounder as well. But working with those other two 1st rounders trying to bring in a quality young player, is definitely something that i could understand from a Buffalo perspective. They really need some sort of jolt to try to pull themselves out of the deep hole they've found themselves in for years now. At some point, you really do end up with too much "maybe" with prospects all competing for the same spots and opportunities and roles in the roster. That doesn't work. So getting a good young player to "accelerate" things a little bit makes sense to me.

Preying on a team that has a potential cap issue that might prohibit them from fitting someone in easily.

-Fiala in MIN.
-Someone out of TBL.
-Boeser out of VAN (though seems kind of redundant with Skinner and Olafsson already in the fold).
-Maybe one of the PHI Defencemen like Provorov? Would be a kind of funny merry-go-round swap with Ristolainen.
-CGY seem like they may have some real business decisions to make, pending what those Gaudreau/Tkachuk extensions look like. Things could get really tight there, and squeeze somebody out.
-PIT could have something shake loose if they want to get Malkin and Letang both retained. Maybe Kapanen for a later 1st?
-CBJ have Laine potentially dangling (though again, kind of redundant with BUF current wingers).
-WPG also seem like they're probably going to be looking to reconfigure or retool some things, and might be enticed to move a good player to free up that room to do something different?

Seems like there are potentially a lot of situations around the league where teams might be open to moving a good player for a 1st round pick or two, to free themselves up to reinvest elsewhere in their lineup up against the cap.

I think the idea of Buffalo (who are already extremely heavy on young/unproven picks/prospects) actually making all three of those 1st round picks really stretches the bounds of what is feasible to incorporate into your lineup all at once like that. I get why Buffalo fans might recoil at the notion of "accelerating" anything, as the attempts to accelerate the rebuild through UFA have been an unmitigated disaster. But i think dealing later 1st round picks for more established and younger NHL talent is a more viable route to that.
