CC said having Donnie Meatballs here was a huge part of his decision
Completely different players. Miller was supposed to contribute offensively but only hit shinpads. Clifton is a cleaner.Just please be better than Colin Miller and some other D scrubs we've had before.
He just can't be a top 4 defenseman with those giveaway stats.
I like him on the team, but doesn't address the biggest need we have on defense.
I'm way more worried about Clifton's rush defense than his turnovers.Giveaways are partially related to systems. If he is instructed to clear and give it to Power, he won't have as many giveaways as if he's trying stretch passes across the red line.
That is something they struggled with a lot last year. It'd be nice to see them stand up the opposition at the blue line. They showed glimpses of it last year when they were playing chippy, but it obviously wasn't nearly consistent enough.I'm way more worried about Clifton's rush defense than his turnovers.

Giveaways and takeaways are unreliable, like hits, when taking a player out of the context of his team. They're judged differently by each scorer for one thing. He just can't be a top 4 defenseman with those giveaway stats.

He came from the top defensive system last year. If he wasn't good with it there, good luck to him in our system where the D and F leave the zone way too fast to try to get into rush.
One of the things that we love about Sammy as a defender is his ability to separate the puck from man along the boards. Clifton does the same thing well but whereas Sammy kinda rides his man into the wall, Clifton will allow a soft gap and close quickly to separate. Power picks up the puck with time and space while the forwards have already turned up ice.He came from the top defensive system last year. The hope is he gels with Power. That's the luxury we get with having a #1 pick on our second pairing. A true #4 won't be a necessity. All we need is someone to do the dirty work, and Clifton seems perfect for that role. Time will tell!Always Seemed like a 'good dude' and was part of a lot of charity work in the Boston/New England area. I'm sure he will continue that in Buffalo/western NY.
As a player... 3rd pairing defenseman.
Yea he tends to get Risto syndrome a lot where he takes himself out of the play going for big hits. Hopefully he can clean that up.I'm way more worried about Clifton's rush defense than his turnovers.
He is what he is at this point.Yea he tends to get Risto syndrome a lot where he takes himself out of the play going for big hits. Hopefully he can clean that up.
not much, but dancing with Cozens .....
