Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that. I don't have much new to add on this topic and I'll stick with my opinion that I think there has been a lot of looking backward so far, but that doesn't mean it has to continue.

Obviously managers often look to guys they have a connection to (I have opinions on this but they're even more off topic, suitable for my newsletter!) so I understand why Patty would want to bring in a coach he knew, and I understand why Murray will probably want to do the same, but I look forward to hopefully adding more personnel that don't have a past connection to Buffalo (or to the Pittsburgh core that's in management), I look forward to the possibility of new perspectives.

The only other thing I'd like to comment on, for clarity, is the Murray Patrick thing. I only caught the last few minutes of the presser (haven't listed to the full PC yet) and a couple of minutes of Sly and Petey (I know, I know) but I got the impression neither of them knew the other had been hired until they were at the dais. Since my concerns about the operation of this team are known, you can understand why that would look like a red flag to me. I'm hoping it was just a lack of communication on the media side however.

Okay, glass chilled, martini time for the last two periods. :amazed:

Murray said on GR this afternoon that Patty told him about Patrick during the 2nd interview. He seemed happy to have him onboard.

Here are some radio interviews with Tim and Rob Ray after the hiring. Tim seems ecstatic with the job. Sounds like won't be many moves for a while until he really does a thorough evaluation of the Sabres.

Here is the Sportsnet interview.... Don't think it's been posted..

Plans on sucking next year for '15 Draft which was a relief to my ears... Hopefully when he means drafting high..he's shooting for #1 or #2.
Well, in that interview, Murray did say: "... in a perfect world, this draft and next draft are where we pick high, where we pick multiple times, and I would hope that after next year's draft we're playing at a competitive level and we're making trades for the future (guys that can help us today and in the future) ... I'm not saying we have a three year plan, but I would like to hope that we've made huge strides after the '15 draft."

He also added: "I like an aggressive style. I like a two-man forecheck. I like a D that's able to pinch."

Anybody else a little concerned that there are too many people with a say in decisions now? It had been Darcy and Devine before, easy chain of command. Now they have created new positions for Lafontaine, Cunneyworth, Patrick and the guy from Penn St, kept Devine on and brought in Nolan while retaining Rolstons staff. There is also the shadow of Lafontaine being groomed to take GM job and Black is still team president.

Make no mistake, I like the Murray hire, he helped build Ottawa and seems highly regarded, isn't afraid to draft Europeans and finds good layers in late rounds.

The organization just seems bloated now, and I wonder why Murray would come in to a job with so many other voices in the process, with the added compartmentalization what is the actual chain of command?

I doubt there are more people involved in personnel decisions than is normal

I thought about this, but no. He now has smart hockey minds to bounce ideas off of, but he (Murray) has the final say. It's nothing but a good thing IMO.

Cunneyworth is Special Assistant in Rochester and it's more of a coaching role than GM role.

I wonder how much of Murray being a "draft guru" is going to actually come into play..most GM's have too much on their plate to do any significant scouting..so it seems it will come down to whoever he puts in that position (Devine?) to determine the overall success.

If not Devine ..who? .. Wonder if we'll be getting a new Director of Amt Scouting or if that'll still be under Devines control..

If only our media could come up with some decent questions to find out instead of wasting time on questions that nobody can give an honest answer about at this time (Miller question)

I'd imagine he has to already have pretty good knowledge of this year's draft class. Considering his role in Ottawa he's probably been looking at prospects for this draft for some time.

He also just mentioned next year's draft, and how important it is along with this year's draft. I wonder if he's going to aim to have next year be another potentially rough year, and then turn things around from there.
