Friedman: Sabres preparing for An Additional Top Ten Pick

Wouldn't be surprised if Ottawa was offering up their pick for Sam Reinhart.

Ottawa does not need another tweener winger/could we make him a centre? player.

If they're going to pay for a centre then pay for it. Don't get a hybrid perimeter guy.

If they're trading a top 10 pick I want an answer not another question mark.

Off the top of my head, Washington gave up a 1st and 2nd to swap relatively comparable players in Mantha and Vrana. Toronto has paid 1sts to dump one year of Marleau and get a rental Foligno.

This draft year by all accounts was not considered all that strong and relative draft position matters less this year than most other seasons.

Lets not pretend a GM wouldn't say - hey, I have a team that:

1) can make the playoffs and maybe do some damage; or
2) has a deep prospect pool and need to add some NHLers.

Lets look at adding the 25 year old C/W with decent size that scores with regularity and has decent underlying numbers on a garbage Sabres team.
Neither Washington or Toronto thought they’d be out in the first round. Their picks were less valuable than the guaranteed 15th overall.

How valuable do you think a late top-10 pick in a draft that was generally considered a flyover draft where a lot of prospects barely played and competition was out of whack? You don't think its worth a 25 year old former 2nd OA that can play center or wing that has 20+ goals the last 4 seasons and a 60 point full season pace the last 3?

reinhart for canucks 1st and a cap dump (assuming the player they want isnt there)?

Anaheim isn't going to give up the third pick for Eichel.
Yes they are. We almost got Dubios and its been reported by friedman we are going to make deal this offseason. eichel is more valuable to anaheim that 3rd overall in the most crapshoot draft since the late 90's early 2000's. 3 - 9 is nearly interchangeable and holds no consensus

Definitely has the feel of a Ristolainen/Reinhart to VAN/LAK type deal. Maybe throw the NJD in the mix too. Teams with Top-10 picks, that look like they're also in a mood to start making a push for the playoffs sooner rather than later.

Though obviously the Eichel situation remains unresolved, and would seem likely to include a top pick this year, as one piece of the deal.

Could also be using the team "Top-10 Pick" pretty loosely in this instance to generate "hype". In the sense that, things open up to a lot of different possibilities if you include potential deals with teams just around the fringes outside the technical Top-10. Though the "preparation" would be functionally more or less exactly the same anyway. The same prospects a team would be really keying in on around pick #10. Beyond what the Sabres are looking at #1 Overall, but in that "Top-10ish neighborhood", and well before they were scheduled to pick again.
New Jersey will have nothing to do with trading a top-5 pick with Jack Hughes' brother and three other elite defensive prospects available

I'm sticking with my columbus reinhart prediction from that earlier thread with other pieces added here and there

I'm most likely wrong, but to me it seems the most logical, and maybe Colmbus has been given permission to talk to Newport sports.

So many people assuming its going to be a 1 for 1 trade. That is highly unlikely. Its much more likely its 1st for player + pic/prospect/player.

Saying its not going to be X player bc X player isnt worth a top 10 pic excludes many other potential structures. There is much more to trades than what draft pick X player is worth

I'm content with it being Reinhart to Anaheim, not greedy. lol. Reinhart on Zegras wing would be something.

Seattle moves 2nd OA + something I am too lazy to imagine for Eichel. The crowd goes wild.
I think this makes too much sense. Seattle gets there 1C franchise player right off the bat. It will cost more than 2 overall but the value is there and it is not like Seattle needs all the picks they are going to have. Put Eichel in at 1C then Tyler Johnson as the 2C then fill out the wings.

Will be interesting to see how a pick is valued in this draft. For instance, I would rather have had a pick in the 6-10 range in last years draft than 3OA in this draft.
