Sabres hire Tim Murray (not Mike Futa)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
All this could have been solved by making him Asst GM instead of that one who shall not be named.

I think it'd be surprising to see Futa go to Buffalo, considering how they basically slashed their scouting departments budget to nothing, hence the decision to scout via video tapes. Seems like the results of that are showing now.

Futa's rep is built on the draft, doesn't seem like a good fit.

Allot of teams rely most heavily on tapes (thank goodness) but other than that I agree completely.

If Futa wanted to be an asst GM he would have been one here.

He sure doesn't seem like he wants to go anywhere including Buff at least not since his name has been being dropped.

In 2006 the Sabres fired multiple scouts and moved more into Video scouting as a cost saving move under owner Golisano. Terry Pegula bought the team a couple years ago and has been investing heavily into scouting and other off ice improvements. This includes expanding the pro and amateur scouting staff.

I think the Sabres would be an ideal place for an up and coming GM. The franchise is the closest to a ball of clay a GM could get into. Multiple high end prospects, multiple high draft picks, a lot of cap space, and the bottom has already been reached.

This.

Even though I know a Sabres fan in real life, I'd rather point out the long-term problems the Sabres have than see turn Mike Futa into a quick fix by the Sabres.

Awesome. It would be a pretty big blow to our scouting staff to lose Futa. Yanetti is great too, but having them both really puts us over the top and keeps those awesome picks coming.

And (per Puck Daddy article on the hiring) what i a part of the Sabres plan:
Follow the path that the Royal warriors blazed

It’s clear that Terry Pegula and Ted Black, from the end of last season onward, don’t have an appetite for a prolonged rebuild. The plan, as voiced by Regier before his firing, is to follow the map of the Los Angeles Kings: Draft brilliantly, and then keep some of the pieces while aggressively using others to upgrade the roster. That’s how the Kings ended up with Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and a Stanley Cup. The Sabres want to follow the same path.

Yep. now my only worry is his link to the Calgary GM job, which is a spot worse as it's in our division...

Hope the Sabres realize that with the exception of Wayne Simmonds the Kings traded two guys that are hardly playing up to what was expected of them by the teams that acquired them in order to get Richards and Carter. Johnson was addition by subtraction with Voynov joining the team, that kind of thing doesn't happen very often.

TG might be able to shed some light on this. TG - wasn't Futa only considering the Buffalo job because it would have been closer to home? Calgary is a long way from Toronto. I dunno, maybe if the Flames threw enough money at Futa he would consider it?

Why would Buffalo want to follow the Kings path? Reading these boards, I thought the organization and team sucked.

Then they should hire Terry Murray to coach. Not even being funny. I'm actually shocked that Terry Murray still hasn't found a head coaching job. He's unquestionably a flawed coach but many teams could benefit from playing the kind of disciplined, structured hockey he coaches.

Oh well, I guess we're just gonna have to face facts that Futa won't be around forever. But if we're to lose him I really hope it's after the draft.

He has a proven record of success. But he also has a shelf life

I wonder if that's what theya re going to do. Firstly, Regier siad it before he was fired, so that doesn't mean that's what Pegula/Black want. Secondly, they don't have an appitite for a long rebuild... It's not like our rebuild was fast. DL took the job in 2006 and we didn't even win a playoff round until 2012. I think DL's way is the right way (albeit with some errors on the way, but who doesn't have errors?) but it certainly isn't going to be quick.

Futa scouts and directs scouting for LA. He lives in Ontario. It's a alrge reason why we seem to draft so well out of the OHL (18 OHL kids from seven drafts under Futa, more than any other league). If he was the GM in Calgary, he'd have to move there.
