Do I think Reaves meant to clock his head like that? No. Is it a terrible hit that needs to be eradicated from the game that is all on Reaves to avoid making. 100% yes. He deserves the suspension and has been suspended for this exact play (plus two fines), he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. While Nurse looks at the puck to pick it up, his head is up when he gets hit (and before it, actually, he's looking directly where he's going). Reaves comes from the blindside and makes principal contact to the head, that's on him, not Nurse.

I don't even understand why we'd be upset about the suspension, it's not like we're gonna miss him.

suspend him for the season for all I care but it's only a blindside hit because Nurse is galloping out from behind the net like he's picked up the puck behind the net on a PP after an icing. Leafs 4th line had had possession in the Oilers zone, and one of them played the puck around the net from the far hash mark to continue the cycle. just baffling that a dman could pick up that puck and think he had a clear path out of the zone and up the ice.

It's only a blindside hit because Reaves blindsided him and the Leafs were in possession except when Nurse has the puck, amazing analysis.

hey thanks, and yeah they had possession of the puck and then didn't when the far side forward played the the puck around the net which Nurse retrieved, and they would have gotten it back if Reaves hadn't delivered a dangerous hit that stopped play and commanded a major penalty and suspension etc. and yeah it was only a blindside hit because Nurse didn't look around or have the awareness to understand that all 3 Leafs forwards including Reaves were still in the zone as you would expect them to be 2 seconds after they had a decent cycle established. anyway it's still Reavo's responsibility to not deliver a hit directly to the head in that situation and I feel real bad for Nurse and hope his life isn't changed forever because of this

Which hit is worse? Jeannot or Reeves?
Or Rempes hits last year, both of the purely intent to injure flying chicken wings. The second one which he got 4 games was 2 games after coming off the first intent to injure suspension which was 2 games.

5 games is the blue and white factor

I’m surprised he got 5. Figured he’d get a game or two because it was all head, but it wasn’t a headhunter’s hit. Reeves has the responsibility to hit Nurse through the body and failed, but this wasn’t a blindside chicken wing like Jeannot on Boeser. Nurse does have a responsibility to protect himself, he’s coming around the net with his head down.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth about how this doesn’t belong in the game is cringe tbh. Reaves is responsible for his actions and deserves to sit a couple games, but freight train hits are awesome. If Reaves had been three inches to the left he would have obliterated Nurse with a hit as clean as a whistle. Would have been the hit of the season. Alas, he sits, and the mainboards and Reddit get to farm likes by posting about how awful it is.
Usually all head is a pretty good Friday night
