"Inept with the puck on his stick"

Did you watch the first goal against Philly? Danault flew through the middle of the ice with PERFECT control of the puck on his stick, kept it away from one checker, then drew the second defender toward the puck before dishing it to Gally.

i mean i'm pretty sure thats exacly what he meant. it is a good play, but it's a straight line skating with no lateral movement at all, not much pressure or puck skills nescessity, followed with a 8foot lateral pass with no one in between. those types of play are effective yes, but doesn't require any sort of skills beside good top end speed and rarely happens because it was a bad neutral zone cover from the other team that caused that play to happen and when they do happen, how many times a goalie gets beat by a shot like that? would you have bring this play into the conversation if gallagher didn't score?

Not trying to take anything away from Danault, but they aren't anything alike. Poehling has way better edge and lateral movement, uses his body movement to create fakes to beat defenders ( Danault doesn't do this he's very predictable) Poehling has a MUCH better vision and can make cross-ice pass thru traffic. Will poehling be able to bring that overall package and skillset into the NHL, nobody knows right now. But if he does, he will be a much better player than danault in the Ozone.

Yeah Poehling's cross ice passes are pretty fantastic. Danault makes nice little passes here and there but there's no contest in that department. I feel like I keep saying this but I feel like ever since the WJCs he looks faster and is making plays at higher speeds. That bodes so well for me. I'm becoming less cautious of his upside more and more all the time.

I know this is a Poehling thread, and I'm by no means putting Poehling down. I was just disputing the statement that Danault is "inept with the puck". That's a gross exaggeration, and it's not necessary to put another player down in order to say you like someone.

There is a difference between saying "Poehling seems to make really good cross-ice passes" or perhaps "Poehling has very good edgework". But to say Danault is "inept" is really not necessary on a Habs forum and actually REDUCES the credibility of the praise of Poehling, since if the person can make such an absurd claim, maybe ALL his claims are absurd!?

Again, I do like Poehling and think he will be an asset for our team!

I have no problem whatsoever playing Ryan on the 4th line next year as long he has talented linemates.

I'd rather see him get 20 mins in the AHL rather than ~9 mins on the 4th line with a bunch of plugs

If he can hold down the 3rd line next year, I'd like to see Domi shifted to his natural position

Domi - Danault - Gallagher
Drouin - Kotkaniemi - Shaw
Tatar - Poehling - Armia

Could use an upgrade on the RW though...maybe trade Drouin or Tatar for a RW

This is literally the only time Danault has done something like that in his 300 ish games career.

Why not move Danault to the wing? Danault is not a better top 6 center than Domi.

Heck, why not just trade Danault for a RW? Hed be coming off a career high and hed have incredible value, plus hes due for a big pay raise. Let people realize he wont put up these numbers again once Gallagher and Tatar are pryed away from him.

I have a hard time picturing Poehling not panning out at this point. I think he's a very safe bet to be a solid middle-six contributor. Only question that remains is just how high is his upside.

I could see him become another Danault, or somewhere closer to an O'Reilly. There's a pretty big margin between the two.

Yeah i agree i don't see him not becoming at least a Danault type player.

3rd line NHL next year or AHL?

Depends if he is physically ready or not. Joe Thornton played his entire first year on a 4th line. He was the 11st most used forward of Boston his first season. Datsyuk started his career playing mostly on a 3rd line. Datsyuk was the 9th most used forward of the wings his 1st season.

Contrary to what some believe it's not a problem at all if the player is ready and got the required skills. A kid can learn a lot by playing 12-13 minutes on a 3rd or even 4th line while watching the games from the bench and training with pros.

There's not much to learn from the AHL facing scrubs like Weal if the player is ready mentally and physically.

How many good teams do you see develop their best prospects on the 4th line?
The major reason offensive prospects are never developed on a 4th line is that they usually suck defensively at such a young age.

Poehling is a solid two-way center that could probably do the job and not get exposed or need sheltering.

Because our centres would be Domi, a rookie who hasn't played an NHL game yet and another young centre who hasn't scored a goal in 30 road games.

None of our centres can play defensive matchups, kill penalties or win as many faceoffs as him. Even if he goes back to being a 40 point guy he still adds a ton of value to our team.

Man you should dig deeper than just points when evaluating players...

Danault is more important to this team right now than Domi as crazy as it may sound...

Or 4th lime at the end of this season? :hyper:

If the Habs do not make the playoffs, not sure it would be a good thing to burn one year of his ELC for 2-3 games.

But then again, if that's what it takes to make sure he signs with Montreal, go for it.

Why aren't you answering my question? How many teams with strong 2way prospects develop on the 4th line? (please list some examples)

I'm not being paid to post here for god sake...

Even if the answer is zero at the end of the day why would it matter?

We're talking about different players, different situations, different coaches, different a lot of things! It would be quite irrelevant.

And just an awful angle taken by Big Buff. lol

Should we post the video of Eller beating Phaneuf?
