If he scores 100 points, wins a cup here and retires a lifelong oiler he gets his 93 in the rafters at Rogers.

I don’t expect him to win but should get vote consideration at the least for selke
💯
Give him another 2-3 year sunset deal to take him comfortably to ~2031 in any case.

So far the criteria has been HHoF with the exception of Hamilton whose name is there for obvious historical reasons. You would be hard pressed to find many bigger supporters of Nuge than me but I don't think they should deviate from this policy. There are two guys on this team that will be in the HHoF. That is enough from this generation.

I was thinking about this. If he retires as an Oiler at 38 or later, showing he's played 20 straight seasons in Edmonton, I would retire his number on that alone honestly.

They have this new form of recognition that would absolutely be appropriate. But I like the idea of keeping number retirement very exclusive.

Now he is likely to break Lowe's record for the most games played as an Oiler and could well finish in the top 4 for most points by an Oiler so from a franchise perspective it would not be the worst decision they have made.

Disagree, I understand the high threshold for excellence, but at the same time a lot of these guys would have their numbers retired no question in other organizations. Smitty, Nuge, etc belong on that list.

only 2 players in top 11 NHL scoring making less than 7M. Nuge and Tage Thomson (he goes over 7 next year when new contract kicks in)

RNH is an absolute bargain contract right now at 5.125

the only other sub 7M guy in top 20 is Sultze who goes to 8M next year

If we have the same top 34 in scoring next year, the only 2 sub 7M guys will be RNH and Hyman

But "we're" not just any other organisation IMO
I'd rather not follow the lead of teams like Ottawa or Vancouver. In Edmonton, the standard should remain much higher.

Thankfully the org has introduced a new Hall of Fame as a way to properly honour some of those other great players who don't quite meet that high bar of HHOF.

This is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ 12th NHL season. He has 80 points in 67 games and is on pace for 99 points. If he scores 100 points he’ll join a rare group of players who played 10+ seasons before scoring 100 points.

Gordie Howe scored 100 points in his 23rd season in 1969.
Johnny Bucyk did it in his 16th season in 1971.
Steven Stamkos reached 100 points in his 14th season in 2022.
Bobby Hull (1969) and Jean Ratelle (1972) did in their 12th seasons.
Vic Hadfield (1972), Steve Larmer (1991) and Claude Giroux (2018) reached 100 points in their 11th seasons.

Very odd but interesting stat. Amazes me the shit these can find for stats lol

As if we didn't have enough milestones to watch.

Will Connor score 70 goals?
Will Connor score 150 points?
Will Leon score 50/50 again?

Will Nuge break 100 points?

We still have to see what a full season of Kane in our top six looks like, but he could be in that group too.

They haven’t finished their careers yet,

True, but I am willing to go way out on a limb and bet that McDavid and Draisaitl end up in the Hall. The only way that does not happen is if there is a significant injury.

Despite my position, if Nuge had his number retired I would be very happy for the guy. He's been one of my favorite Oilers. Frankly as a player I think he will have a better career than Lowe but Lowe was fortunate to be on so many winners. He will almsot certainly finish his career by passing Lowe on the most games played as an Oiler list.

Now if the Oilers ever went on a multi-year cup run with Nuge playing a big role I could see his chances of a HHoF nomination rise a bit. He could well finish with over 1000 points in his career if he plays into his late 30's which would put hit in the top 100 all time. Daniel Sedin for example got in with 363 goals and 1041 points without a cup. Nuge is currently at 346th all time in points.

I agree with Connor for the 70 goals and 150 points as reasonable targets. I think Nuge will be hard pressed for the 100 points and I think the ship has sailed for Leon to get 50 in 50 games.;)

I'm certain this will seem a bit backasswards to some, but I'm wondering what impact the Nuge has had with Leon and Conner's development in the league.

It has been. I think you deviate from it for certain instances though. We haven’t been an organization that players play their entire career for. Nuge will. There’s a decent chance when he retires that (excluding McDrai) he’ll have the most games played by like 400, and the most points besides Gretzky. He might come up short of the hall of fame, but at some point, organizational importance should count for enough

We have 1 player who barely managed to hit 1000 GP. Nuge is going to smash it. It’s not like we’re talking about retiring Horcoff’s number.

As a long tome Nuge supporter with the scars to prove it I really hope he hits 100. I suspect that if the Oilers have their playoff spot locked up and Nuge is close, he will get a lot of help from the peanut gallery.

As do I. We don’t have a more deserving player. He’s always played defense first and sacrificed his point totals, so it’d be great to see him actually get there. We’ve got some weak opponents coming up, and I hope our PP just destroys them

Two more points for Nuge last night and a solid game all round. He's at 86 with 11 left. 100 will be a challenge but still within reach. It would be great if Nuge got his 100th on the goal where McDavid hit 156.
Nah, you want it on separate goals so they each get their moment (and their puck).
