He has been the Rangers best player all season. He got injured and had a very short stretch of average play. Not sure if he is 100% healthy, but is back playing at the level he did during the regular season.

Is there another defenseman in the league that can accelerate and skate away from pursuers like Mac? Maybe Karlsson, but he can't defend like Mac.

Hopefully, the guy starts getting the accolades that he deserves. I'm tired of hearing names like Hedman and Pietrangelo being better than Mac, they're not.

After Lundqvist, St. Louis's will, etc, McDonagh was a big part of the comeback against Pittsburgh.

He was one of our worst defense men in the first 9-10 games, way too many mental errors, too many goals against directly related to bad mistakes, but he has been our best defense man over the last six games. No coincidence we are doing a lot better.

But, really, where is the Marc Staal appreciation thread? He's the one that carried the weight while McDonagh was recovering and looked lost out there. He's been our best defense man this playoff, IMO. 6 points in 2 games doesn't change that.

Staal really being overlooked here.

I couldn't agree more. Also you can add a Stralman to the appreciation thread list.

We have one on our board. The McDonagh thread was [shockingly] started by a Bruins fan.

that thread is hilarious reading the first part where they are like "wth?!? Higgins for Gomez?" but then when they all learn McD is traded too, it starts getting kinda sad. I directly empathize with them for there were like 10 seasons of me hating Smith for trading Mattias Norstrom and even then if McD didn't turn out so good, I still feel like MTL got way more shafted then we did and the humor is lost. Back to man crushing on the MacTruck!

As good as Stralman has been, a lot of the times, I feel like his play is boosted more by having Staal as a partner than vice versa. If we had Staal-Sauer, I think you see Staal's offense developing similar to McD's. Remember, Staal was an offensive beast in juniors and we do see flashes of that from time to time but his focus seems concentrated on defense.

The more I watch McD, Staal and G play on this team, the more I realize how important it is to keep the three-headed beast.

Staal's possession numbers may take a hit without Stralman, but he's almost impeccable 1 on 1. If somebody is coming down the ice and he has to beat Marc, most of the time that guy isn't gonna get a good shot on net. McD can do that too, but can also chase guys down from behind.

And now you see Marc has maybe his weakest game in the playoffs in game 2 of this series, but McD is out there, finally healthy again, racking up points and pushing the play.

I can't even fathom how bad MTL fans must feel. It'd be like if we traded Kreider for Brian Gionta or something and Kreider was out there styling on everybody.

Two great, great d-men that can go up against the best in the world and win. It's zany to see how little love the Rangers blueline as a collective gets from non-NYR fans on HF. I don't think it's too out there to say all three of McD, G and Staal are underrated. SIX GOALS given up in the last FIVE games. Absolutely unbelievable. While a lot of that is on Hank, a lot of that is on the fact that elite players are going up against McD-G and Staal-Stralsy everytime they're on the ice.

Well with any good pairing they make the sum of their parts better. Stralman is moving the puck out as quick as anyone on the team. He is neutralizing the forecheck superbly. Sure it's partly because of Staal but still he has been playing great. I would love for the Rangers to be able to keep him.

Prior to game 5 in Pitt, Stralman was the 2nd best Dman on the team in the playoffs (based on actual play, imo). Obviously, that's not the case any longer, McD has stepped it up tremendously, as well as Girardi.

There are some doozies in there about McD like:

From what Dany Dubé is saying, McDonagh is probably going to be a bust. He's not showing offensive abilities and for a strictly defensive defenseman, he's not very big or tough. So better trade him now while he has a high value.

Not sure if it's true but that sounds logical.

McDonagh might have gotten stuck in the farm and wasn't developping well offensively.
