They've drafted 3 dman in their last 19 picks. It's their MO.
This is the second time tonight that I'm seeing this statistic which seems oddly cherrypicked to specifically exclude the 2018 draft where five of the six players we selected (including Dahlin and Samuelsson) are defensemen. And then we went on after that to select Johnson, Novikov and Power who are all excellent prospects.

Probably because the current GM and his staff are viewed over those picks rather than previous regimes and scouts?

Okay, that makes sense. I was trying to figure out why the 19 number trails off halfway through the 2019 draft but now I see we're including the three picks made tonight and not including the 2019 draft at all. Thank you

Welcome!

They still have a need to get defensemen into the starter end of the pipeline vs. just getting one part way through to sign. Signing him shouldn't have any bearing on who they drafted today.

I know, and you know that I agree since I’ve been singing from that hymn book for 2 months. I said I’d trade 9+16 to #2 for Nemec, or that I wanted Mintyukov/Korchinski at #9, or Pickering/Bichsel at #16, and/or swing for Rinzel at #28.

But none of those things transpired and that was the one prediction that I got dead wrong (about taking at least 1 Dman in the 1st round).

But since we didn’t, I have to have more hope than I did yesterday that Johnson will re-sign otherwise we will have an almost unimaginable imbalance of F to D prospects….unless we literally draft Dmen with every remaining pick in the rest of the draft.

"maybe" we see a trade today for a dman ? I caught KA saying one thing yesterday, that they are awfully young on D. Made me pause and think that a trade or FA D has to be on his list. Or it means Pysyk will be back lol

Yes, but it should be both. Yes, we're very young on D, but we'll be even younger if we wait another 1-2 years before targeting some in the draft.

I think at this point, besides the obvious guys projected to go high second (Chesley, Odelius, Salamonsson, Warren, etc.) the best value/highest upside Dmen may be those from Russia. I wonder if they thought the Russians would fall in general and the team felt they could get some Dmen later in the draft and therefore went forward heavy in the 1st. Either way, they need to hit on one or two Dmen with the remaining picks.

If we are thinking of the same quote from his presser last night, he mentioned the youth on D as a partial explanation of why they hadn't drafted a D, i.e. the need isn't so glaring as to reach past BPA to draft one.

That said, I'm sure he'd like a vet there. I mean, it is almost certain they add a vet one way or another to at least put them where they were last year, since Pysyk and Miller are UFAs. Whether it is Pysyk/equivalent or a higher level of player remains to be seen. I wouldn't hold my breath too much on the latter.

I was listening to the Kevyn Adams interview on WGR and heard this question. The impression I got is that Johnson is unsure about signing in Buffalo and Adams plans to use development camp as a chance to win him over. Just my take anyway.

It would be great if he could get Johnson signed.

I'm viewing it as a positive that he hasn't outright come out and decided to go back to school. Given what we have in the pipeline, there is a big opportunity for the kid to play a major role in Rochester.

If he wants to play somewhere else, he has a lot more value if he's willing to turn pro and sign an ELC this year.

I predict he stays in school and wiggles himself out to the west coast as a fa. Sabres get a later 2nd round compensatory pick

This jibes with those rumblings seemingly out of nowhere a couple weeks ago that he could still sign this off-season. He still hasn’t actually said he’s going back.

I think he’s going to sign this week. I don’t have any good reason I think it other than him not saying he was going back yet but they have to full court press him. They can tell him he’s their entire defensive prospect pool and it will basically not be a lie

Honestly, based on Forton earlier today I think him coming in and seeing the change. Seeing how much better the organization probably feels now compared to just a couple years ago when he was drafted. That might be enough to convince him it's worth signing and being a part of that group.

This is where guys like Krebs, Samuelsson, Power, Quinn, Peterka, and others can really sell Johnson and Portillo and everyone else on the culture and what the Sabres are building. Very excited they're going to be there.
