Going against type, I see him around 65 pts. Hope my turn towards the positive doesn't jinx him.

One thing I love about him is how inclusive he is with the teammates. When Murray fed him with that cross ice 80 foot pass against the Kings that led to a really pretty goal, rather than do a "look at me", he went right to Murray and said, "what a pass!!", I could read his lips.

Definite leader.

I think it's too early to tell - it's easy to have fun with the teammates when all is going well, the true test of a leader is how they handle adversity and if they handle themselves the right way when the chips are down (and if guys follow them). We are not that far removed from the Springfield debacle, and honestly, I'd hate to pressure a young guy with a C when we have such quality vets deserving of it.

You could have also said similar things about Rick Nash. Highest point total doesn't exactly equal a leader. He's had his moments, including once or twice this year where he has needed some prodding from Richards to get it going. Even as recently as last week. He was one of the ones singled out by Richards after the sleepwalk game against Ottawa.

Interesting article on NHL.com

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=703989&navid=nhl:topheads

Johansen might be the most improved player in the League in 2013-14. He's become a monster in the middle, the prototype franchise center the Blue Jackets hoped for on draft day.

Johansen's dominance goes beyond the 23 goals and 43 points. He's among the team leaders in the possession stats, but it goes beyond that as well.

He's not getting favorable zone starts (the opposite, in fact). Johansen is also facing the toughest competition on the team (not counting the injured Marian Gaborik). Lastly, his PDO (team shooting percentage plus save percentage when he's on the ice) at even strength is 1000, which is the median and means he's likely not being buoyed by any luck one way or the other.

Despite all of those things, Johansen is still one of the team's strongest players when it comes to puck possession. That makes him an incredibly valuable player.

Watching Joey mature as a dominant NHL center is a rare sight.. the kid's reach, puck skill, defense and shot are unreal for a 21 year old...

It has gotten to the point that when his line is out there they have the puck in their offensive zone more than they don't. His play has been so impressive. I wanted us to pick him, but I never thought he would be this good, this early.

And his faceoff skills are a big part of that too.

He has an amazing hockey IQ and great hands to follow.

He is incredibly efficient with his energy. He's not the fastest or the strongest man on the ice at any given moment, but he glides around with deceptive speed, uses his legs and weight well when seperating a player from the puck. If he has a physical transformation like say Nash, when he matures, he'll be a flat out beast to contain. He really reminds me of a guy I watched alot as a kid, Mats Sundin. And Joey likes cats too.

Its a good thing the cap is going up next season pretty significantly. He'll get a pretty good raise this off season.

I just saw a Johansen stat that blew me away.

He's 4th in the entire NHL in scoring 5 on 5 per 60 minutes.

http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_stat...3_s&f2=5v5&f7=40-&c=0+1+3+5+4+6+7+17+18+19+20

His 1.48 goals per 60 minutes of 5 vs. 5 play is only .15 less per 60 minutes played than Ovechkin's (1.63). That means that his goal scoring rate at even strength is roughly 90% of OV's.

That's some pretty heady stuff.

Awesome. I don't think I've been as excited for a player on our team than Joey. He just seems so special. Thanks to Boyd, Howson, and co. for drafting him.

Also looking back at the first few pages in this thread, pretty funny stuff.

So I did this, and in the credit where credit is due dept., the post below is from the bottom of the second page and dated last Oct 24. Don't know for sure but Jenner might have been playing on the fourth line. Horton wasn't even close to being back.

I'd love to see Johansen flanked by Horton and Jenner

I remember being at the Nationwide Arena draft party when we picked up RyJo. The general consensus there was "Who?" and a little bit of disappointment. At that time it had seemed obvious that we needed defense and were going to take defense because those guys were ranked higher in most of the mock drafts.

I feel dumb for having questioned the pick now. I'm glad he has turned into the player he is and I hope he continues to improve so we all get to see the player that he could be.

I wanted Fowler, I had no clue who Joey was... I now know, incredible pick that Howson and company should be given credit for drafting.

Fowler would have been a good pick too. That was a solid draft, lots of good forwards and a few defensemen. I don't think alot teams would take Joey higher than 4th in that talent pool even today. I think Skinner would go 3rd as often as Johansen would.

Going into the draft, I was hoping for Gudbranson (drafted 3rd by the Panthers), Fowler, and Gormley. As forwards, didn't have anyone in mind but I remember hearing a lot on Connolly. When Howson said Johansen I was in disbelief. But like everyone, right now we all love the pick. Him being a local kid makes it extra special for me as well. It means I'm not the only Columbus fan in the lower mainland.

Found an interesting quote here:
Columbus GM Scott Howson apparently was smitten with him, even if scouts weren’t quite as interested.

“I just remember talking to Mr. Howson, and he really enjoyed the first game he saw me play and the first game of playoffs with the Spokane Chiefs. He really liked my style of play,” Johansen said. “I’m a play maker with good hockey sense, good vision, and good puck protection. He likes my style of play.”

I'd be curious to know if the part about "scouts weren't quite as interested" referred to the collective (since Johansen fell somewhere between 8th and 12th in most rankings), or the actual scouts employed by the team.

(EDIT: I'm only curious for informational purposes. There's no ulterior motive here.)

From the context of the article, I think it's the former.

Article supports collective.

Yes, Howson should be given full marks for Johansen, as well as Atkinson, Calvert, Jenner, Prout, Savard, Moore, Jake, and Murray. Then again drafting Fowler would have fine as well, I'm not sure if it was a better decision but it was certainly a riskier one that seems to be paying off. Fowler is back on track and Murray and Fowler back there for the next decade would have been incredible.

Not bad when you can pull an impact player from every draft for 5 years running and there are still more that will probably make an impact at the NHL level.

Looks like JK did a pretty good job last season as well.

I didn't get too involved in the draft that season.. I just heard the analysis, and thought we reached a tad bit. Johansen seemed to be one of those high risk/high reward draft picks as he skyrocketed up the draft boards so fast. Remember being a little disappointed, but I quickly got on his bandwagon after getting to meet him a couple of times at the CBJ signings and getting his jersey. He's been my favorite player by far to meet at these signing events.
