One thing I love about him is how inclusive he is with the teammates. When Murray fed him with that cross ice 80 foot pass against the Kings that led to a really pretty goal, rather than do a "look at me", he went right to Murray and said, "what a pass!!", I could read his lips.
Definite leader.

Johansen might be the most improved player in the League in 2013-14. He's become a monster in the middle, the prototype franchise center the Blue Jackets hoped for on draft day.
He's not getting favorable zone starts (the opposite, in fact). Johansen is also facing the toughest competition on the team (not counting the injured Marian Gaborik). Lastly, his PDO (team shooting percentage plus save percentage when he's on the ice) at even strength is 1000, which is the median and means he's likely not being buoyed by any luck one way or the other.
Despite all of those things, Johansen is still one of the team's strongest players when it comes to puck possession. That makes him an incredibly valuable player.
It has gotten to the point that when his line is out there they have the puck in their offensive zone more than they don't. His play has been so impressive. I wanted us to pick him, but I never thought he would be this good, this early.
He has an amazing hockey IQ and great hands to follow.
I just saw a Johansen stat that blew me away.
He's 4th in the entire NHL in scoring 5 on 5 per 60 minutes.

His 1.48 goals per 60 minutes of 5 vs. 5 play is only .15 less per 60 minutes played than Ovechkin's (1.63). That means that his goal scoring rate at even strength is roughly 90% of OV's.
That's some pretty heady stuff.
Also looking back at the first few pages in this thread, pretty funny stuff.
I'd love to see Johansen flanked by Horton and Jenner
I remember being at the Nationwide Arena draft party when we picked up RyJo. The general consensus there was "Who?" and a little bit of disappointment. At that time it had seemed obvious that we needed defense and were going to take defense because those guys were ranked higher in most of the mock drafts.
I feel dumb for having questioned the pick now. I'm glad he has turned into the player he is and I hope he continues to improve so we all get to see the player that he could be.
I wanted Fowler, I had no clue who Joey was... I now know, incredible pick that Howson and company should be given credit for drafting.
Going into the draft, I was hoping for Gudbranson (drafted 3rd by the Panthers), Fowler, and Gormley. As forwards, didn't have anyone in mind but I remember hearing a lot on Connolly. When Howson said Johansen I was in disbelief. But like everyone, right now we all love the pick. Him being a local kid makes it extra special for me as well. It means I'm not the only Columbus fan in the lower mainland.I wanted Fowler, I had no clue who Joey was... I now know, incredible pick that Howson and company should be given credit for drafting.

Columbus GM Scott Howson apparently was smitten with him, even if scouts weren’t quite as interested.
“I just remember talking to Mr. Howson, and he really enjoyed the first game he saw me play and the first game of playoffs with the Spokane Chiefs. He really liked my style of play,” Johansen said. “I’m a play maker with good hockey sense, good vision, and good puck protection. He likes my style of play.”
From the context of the article, I think it's the former.Found an interesting quote here:
I'd be curious to know if the part about "scouts weren't quite as interested" referred to the collective (since Johansen fell somewhere between 8th and 12th in most rankings), or the actual scouts employed by the team.
