I think Torts just needs to sit him down and watch a bunch of Bruce Lee movies. Enter the Dragon was on AMC last night and we'll Joey was the first one who popped up in my mind when I saw this

I'd be VERY surprised if he isn't in our top 4 next year.

Where are you getting this idea from? It's not that common for D to play top four in their draft +2 season. And unless they're on the Ekblad/Doughty level (which Werenski is not) it's unheard of for D to be top pair quality that quickly.

He's good. Our D stinks.

its usually not common that a 17 year old rookie scores 9 goals in the NCAA and is 6'2 214lbs. I dont think its too much to think he would be able to handle a similar load as Hanifan is this year which is 17ish minutes a game with limited PK time. We also watched Ryan Murray play 20 minutes a game as a rookie and yes he was 20 but he had his own things to overcome with like playing 23 games in his 19 year old season.

Im not saying whether or not its the best course of action and there would be some growing pains as there almost always is with defensemen but its not crazy to think that he could possibly be a number 4 next year.

Not crazy to think it could possibly happen, but crazy to assume it will happen.

And he might be top four by some benchmark next year, but folks need to dial back expectations hard if they think he's going to lift up this D core in a meaningful way before the age of 20.

Unless Werenski absolutely wows during camp he shouldn't play here next year. Hell, he may still want to play for Michigan for one more year and won't even be at camp. Time will tell. We'll see how he does at the WJC.

(insert stupid comment of how he'll be 1 year closer to being a FA here)

Joke about it if you will but anyone who doesn't at least consider the possibility of him not signing here has his or her head placed in a dark place. If he stays one more year at Michigan then he is only one year away from being a UFA. If you were a kid from Michigan and could chose between playing with your friend on your boyhood team or join an organization that can't shoot straight, what would you do? Me I'm thinking he might chose Detroit.

Until he signs here and I hope it is after this seaosn I will worry. Not a lot but a bit.

Oh and to stay on topic, Joey is Nash 2.0.

Playing with a friend? Yes, he's looking forward to it. That's probably why he retweeted this:

Werenski would be classified as 18 at the time of being drafted based on his turning 18 on or before September 15 of the calendar year he was picked. Therefore he could fall under any of the following sections of the CBA:

Article 8.6(c)(i).
If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class.

Sure, this could apply if he graduates on time. His NHL rights as held by Columbus would expire on August 15, 2018.

Article 8.6(c)(ii)
If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college student.

Short version: if he withdraws at any time before January 1 2018, then he rights would expire on June 1 2019. If it's after January 1 2018, then August 15 2018.

There's nothing to be gained from playing out to become a UFA except for freedom of movement. This isn't Mike Reilly, who needed time and development to go from 5'7" afterthought to NHL prospect; this is someone who could have signed an ELC at any point this year and not been out of place somewhere in the pro system.

Given the choice between signing after this season and entering the pro system in 2016, or entering in either 2018 or 2019 but being able to pick where you start, anyone fully possessing their senses would choose the former.

In the meantime, this just sounds like Barney Gumble. "Hey Homer, I'm worried about the beer supply. After this case, and the other case, there's only one case left!"

Agree with this 100%.

Very tough to assume a kid can jump straight to the NHL but then straight in top 4. I think it's greater than 50% that he's on the roster. But you have to pair him with right guy if you're going to play him 20 minutes a night. he's going to be playing a game at a much faster speed than what he's ever seen before and against players bigger, faster and stronger than what he has played against. Not saying he can't but it's a big assumption for 2016-17 season (especially the beginning).

Personally, I have no fear of Werenski not signing.

When? That's the big question. If Michigan gets into the final four, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him sign this year after his seasons over (depending on how many games are left). That article I linked awhile ago quoted him saying that (and this is paraphrasing) that he wanted to restore Michigan back to its former glory.

I'm really liking this kids demeanor.

Just imagine if we get Matthews and then trade Johansen for Seth Jones. Just call us Team America.

I have been seeing a lot of Joey to Nashville rumors going around, the whole hang up is Poile isn't willing to give up Josi, Weber or Jones. If he thinks he is going to get a Number 1 center without giving up one of those 3 defensemen. he should probably start looking at Number 2-3 centers. Gotta give up value to get value.
