If the Hawks can squeeze someone for anything more than a 3rd for Donato, I'll be suitably impressed.

TBF, he has improved his strength and speed from what it was 3-4 years ago, but he's not going to scare many people going into board battles.

He has a good shot.

I think he could be a pretty popular option as the deadline approaches. He's pretty cheap and no commitment and he's good at generating offense. I think a team looking to zhuzh up their third line output with a guy who is crafty and can put the puck in the net, he's certainly a solid option.

I think there will be pitfalls if a team looks at his minutes and production and says "oh, well we can amplify this by giving him scoring line minutes". He's been proven time and time again to be a guy who will create in a limited role, but the role has a definite limit where there is rapid falloff once you past that 14 minute range.

It also has to be a team that constructs their third line (or some bottom six "tertiary scoring line") in a certain way. A lot of teams want their third line for the playoffs to be all speed, forechecking, hitting and crazy up-tempo pace. That's probably not the line for Donato.

But...a 20 goal, 40-point third liner who can play on your second PP unit and has some wing-center versatility should be able to nab something decent. I wouldn't be surprised if he got the Hawks a 2nd round pick.

Honeslty as a Hawks fan who barely watched him prior to him being a Hawk I can't agree that assessment

He plays hard, honest. Nose for the net. Obviously he's getting more bounces than usual this season but there's never been a discourse amongst Hawks fans about him being soft. Certainly a good third liner for a contender.

Donato reinvented himself in Seattle a bit. He came in being a floater that was easily knocked off the puck and left a guy hungry for minutes who would go to the dirty areas and battle for garbage goals.

His work on the boards improved a lot, and although he would still fall down more often than not with any medium or heavier contact occured, he was much tougher to dislodge from the puck along the boards and in traffic when he left the Kraken.

I can't say that he'd be a trade target if my team was looking to make a deep playoff run, but if your bottom six is lacking scoring and you need an extra body, he might be a depth pickup that can provide a big goals every few games with limited minutes.
