"ISHOCKEY He has scored 27 goals and 22 assists in 34 games for the J20 team - and five points in 15 games for the A team. But Luleå Hockey's forward talent Noel Gunler was not selected for the J18 World Cup in mid-April. "I was expecting to be involved," he says.
David Olsson Jiglund13: 14 | 2019-04-03
He was told by coach Magnus Hävelid on Tuesday night.
- According to him, other players have played and produced better, says Noel Gunler.
How do you look at it?
- I disagree, he says and continues:
- I think it's completely wrong. I'm not going to say I thought I was given, but I was expecting to be there. But I may try to make the best of it and train hard and show that he has made a f***ing mistake."

"Therefore, the talent was rated: "No simple decision"
ISHOCKEY The union captain Magnus Hävelid has full understanding of Noel Gunler's disappointment after his negative national team message.
David Olsson Jiglund14: 54 | 2019-04-03
- I understand that he was disappointed, says Magnus Hävelid and continues:
- And that was really no easy decision. He is a great talent. But we had to make a decision and had to go a little on day shape. Then it is always a puzzle that one should get together when putting together a team. But he is set up as a reserve and you never know what happens. It can be someone who is hurting himself. And it's just to hope that he and the others who didn't come with clench their fists and fight further."

He has dominated in SuperElit and has done well in SHL. But in the U18 World Cup, Noel Gunler is missing. The federation captain Magnus Hävelid chose other players in the role Gunler was in.
- It was no easy decision to take, says Hävelid to hockeysverige.se.
When the Swedish squad for the U18 World Cup was presented at home, there were big promises such as Jesper Wallstedt, Victor Söderström, Philip Broberg, Tobias Björnfot, Alexander Holtz and Lucas Raymond in the squad. One, however, was missing was Luleå's breakthrough man Noel Gunler.

The 17-year-old has impressed during the season with 27 goals for 31 matches in SuperElit, and 3 + 2 for 15 matches in SHL, as a result. He became the first player born in 2001 to score in SHL. He had better scores in the J20 series than everyone else in the squad for the U18 World Cup. But it was not enough to take a seat in the squadron's World Cup squad.
- It is on sporting grounds, when you put the puzzle together. But it is millimeters that determine. For example, we had a tournament in Russia and there were other players more prominent, says the national coach Magnus Hävelid.
However, Hävelid is clear that he likes Noel Gunler as a player.
- He's incredibly skilled. And there can of course be changes in the squad, due to injuries and such things. But it is about putting together a puzzle. Then we take into account the shape and the overall bit. We take into account the ice age they should have and the distribution of roles. There we have chosen other players.
But if I interpret you correctly, can he become relevant in the event of a rebid?
- Yes, he's taken as a reserve. It's nothing we published, but I can say that he is. He is included in our thoughts and there was no easy decision to take, to have him on that side. There are other guys who are also there who are disappointed, who could have been involved. It's about millimeters, as I said.

Därför petades Luleås storlöfte Noel Gunler från U18 VM-truppen

This seams incredibly weird. That Coach must be biased since the player apparently hasnt violated the code of conduct of the federation. Its seems pretty clear to me that Gunler is better than most forwards on this roster.

A poster in that thread claimed to have knowledge of attitude problems. It might not be true, which is why I said perceived.

Some swedish coaches are so slow with getting with ”the times”, i.e. a deeper offensiv is better than the old, defensive ”role players” Hävelid’s asking for

I don't know what to say if Gunler really was left off due to performance. Most forwards on this Swedish team are very mediocre. They must have some other issues with him.

I've seen some questionable body language from him before and perhaps he lacks that top competitiveness but it's hardly been a big issue for me.

Tbh, i think it is true what hävelid says. They are using role players which has been forced on all junior swe teams for years now. It is a crappy model though.

As has been mentioned, he was left off because they don't want a player on their team who might sour if he's not on a good line or on the power play. No reason why he shouldn't be based on talent but there are also lots of talent there and Swedish junior national teams traditionally want energy and work ethic on the fourth line.

Of course he's talented enough to be a top player on the team. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call.

This guy is right up there as an elite talent for the next draft.

Right now I’d have:

1. Lafreniere
2. Raymond
3. Lundell
4. Gunler
5. Byfield
6. Holtz

That 2-6 could move around a lot during draft year.

Here are some of Noel Gunler's highlights from this past season... His shot seems very impressive to me and he seems to find scoring areas easily.

Until I hear something more significant, this guy remains a top name for 2020. I’ve read about a lack of coachability and a boastful swagger. Those aren’t “no draft list” red flags to me. This guy was putting up more points than Raymond or Holtz in SuperElit and had an impressive start in the SHL. I have him at 4 in my rankings right now. His ceiling is as high as anyone’s in this draft. He needs to become a more complete player.

Kid said the coach that cut him from the Swedish team made a "f***ing mistake", and got suspended 5 games for pushing a linesman. Not a chance would I want this kid in my locker room. If he doesn't cool down he'll end up on "no draft" lists. Merkley did, and Gunler sounds just as bad if not worse.

Bohooo. Sounds to me he wants to win. There has never beena cocky north american player before.

Eric Lindros was cocky and yet went 1 OA.

Did not know about the suspension. That’s certainly a tack against him.

The mistake comment is a positive for me.

I mean I don't see anything too severe here, Laine was reported of having some issues with his attitude, but went 2nd ovr anyway
And Laine is butting heads with Jets management and has a video game addiction which led to the worst season of his career.

Bet you want em ”good ol Ontario”-boys instead eh?

Peter Forsberg said in an interview that he would like to hit the referee after a game when he was 18-19, and he became one of the best players of all time, but one could be subjective I suppose....
