They were 5 vs 4 opponents, Michkov was preparing for offense, and the Isles defensman saw it and didn't support the attack. It wasn't Michkov's fault that 4 Flyers couldn't protect their goal vs the same number of NYI players. It's probably what Michkov tried to tell Torts, but of course Torts knows everything better...
Torts does know better. His man walked in and he walked out of the zone. His team didn’t have possession. It was brutal defensive coverage. He was trying to cheat offence. He deserved to be coached after that play.

The Flyers don't need to trade their best asset. They need to figure out why they have a coach who doesn't win and rubs people the wrong way.
Are u serious? They are a bottom feeder team with not even close to enough talent to be competitive. The coach is not to blame.

These are the growing pains young players have to go through some times. Michkov is a beauty. A tremendous talent. In this instance he missed his defensive coverage. It is what it is. He shouldn’t be traded. That’s ridiculous. Still torts had every right to coach him.

Yeah, he knows better, that's why they can't score a goal for 180 min already...

It's exactly how they destroy prospects' development. "He must play system. He must do it right. He must follow rules". And then boom, you get another average NHLer instead of potential superstar. Average at best. Michkov should play Michkov's hockey not that Torts' shit. It's how he's become Michkov after all.
He will have a long and decorated career in the KHL if that is how he chooses to play.

I doubt it, I'm pretty sure there will be some of the NHL teams that take him from the Flyers and let him play his way...
Sure for a while and is anyone else finding the irony here in that the NHL has incorporated some of the Soviet system style of play that helped launch them into the real hockey world in the 70s?

I was a huge fan of 5 man units that was you know a system and if any player in the system didn't play the system it wouldn't work.

At the end of the day NHL teams , supposedly like teams everywhere, are there to try and win games not appease certain segments of followers with offensive stats just because.

Wow. The difference between this thread and the Philly board is night and day. The Flyer posters have had it with Torts, his system, his development of Michkov, etc. There's zero creativity is his coaching.

I can envision the conversation now...

Reporter: You've scored 0 goals in 3 games. 6 in the last 6. How are you going to remedy this?

Tortorella: No solution needed. I've already benched my talented rookie for cheating a little bit...he was trying to generate some offense for us. This is the NHL, we play to win.

Roman Rotenberg (calling from St. Petersburg): Benching a talented rookie? Hey Tortorella, any chance you wanna be assistant coach for SKA? Great minds think alike.

The coach tries to win, with michkov on ice they always seem to be hemmed in in their own zone. I would not bench him but kicked his ass straight into the ahl where he belongs. He is painfully soft and slow.
The thing a lot of folks (not you - bear with me) don’t seem to understand is when you have players fly the zone for stretch passes, the team is basically playing 4v5 in the zone if the puck doesn’t get out, and the flyer leaves his teammates briefly short-handed. To your point, it is hard to break out that way which would at least partially explain your observation of the team getting hemmed in when Michkov is on the ice.

The coach/team has a system for a reason, and when one player does his own thing, the system breaks down.

Yep, that's what we learn from a young age, support the breakout. The long range, home run passes have to go through multiple defenders to work, they only work when the passer isn't under pressure.

The breakout needs an option and Michkov often isn't that option right now. Him flying the zone is a handicap to his team, his role is to be an option for the breakout and give his dman and centre a place to put the puck.

Smart doesn't get you from your own blueline to the other end any faster than dumb.
Bure was the best i've ever seen at leaking out for the breakaway pass. He wouldn't have been if he skated like Michkov. It's a play that requires very little thinking, and a lot of skating.

It always worked for Michkov, even this season he scored breakaways goals. And I'm pretty sure Bure wouldn't have a lot of breakaways if he played under Torts and his "system"...

That board is it's own thing. They still think Morgan Frost is a superstar. Some of us stay away.

You need to watch more games then.

Flyers are a lot closer to being a playoff team than the Ducks are. Playing with two young goaltenders.
Yep and that's pretty sad considering the talent the ducks have.

The flyers are bereft of top 6 centers (as good as Cates is, he's playing above where he should right now).

The flyers are clearly tanking. The complaining from some ITT is funny.

Well there's 2 here:

Neither of those breakaways were a result of him cheating out of the d-zone early. 1 of them was on a 3 on 3 OT goal..

Playing defence when the other team has the puck in your zone isn't really a "system', it's just "hockey".
