“Some really good players in our league are really demanding,” Jones said. “He’s not at their level right now so I don’t even want to give you the names. But when you watch them play, they have an inner drive that’s going to push (teammates) to be better. They want to be part of something great, and they want to be great themselves. He’s got some of those qualities. And it’s not just me that’s seen it.”

-These must have been the character concerns MTL brass had.

“I’m not interested in turning him into a checker,” Tortorella said. “Are we going to beat him over the head with (defense)? No. We are starving for the type of plays that he can make, instinctive plays that he can make. We’re certainly going to teach him along the way, especially situational play. There’s certain times in the game that you’ve just got to be simple. … But I want to let him go. We’re not going to try to stifle him in any way, as far as his creativity.”

-Oh and here's Torts who is apparently going to hate him and suck all the offense out of him.

Torts isn't stupid but what's his true understanding of "letting him go" as opposed to "situational play" also remains to be seen. Because he did say many similar things about Gaborik, who was one of the better goalscorers in the league and probably the only real high-octane offensive player Rangers had at the time yet "playing the right way" ruined that relationship pretty quick. Not even going to go into RyJo story.

You could say Gaborik, being a star and a former captain himself, simply had a big ego and RyJo was greedy slacker and whatnot but whatever Torts says on these matters has to be taken with a grain of salt.

The same thing he has done with Tippett and Konecny despite their erratic play sometimes.

The only thing that will make him hate a player is one who doesn't give effort or give a crap in general like RyJo, Kevin Hayes, PLD etc. The only players he's ever clashed with were ones who didn't give a crap and care about winning as much as Torts.

Pointless tonight and missed his SO attempt, but the offensive creativity is already evident.
He looked bad in the first 2 periods. Fumbling the puck all over the place, and just not in tune at all. He looked nerveous and overwhelmed. Doesn't help that Tortorella put him at left wing when he's played RW forever.

He was also closed down quickly and it caught him by surprise. The 3rd period he was much better, and started looking dangerous. He got a dose of NHL reality for sure.

The skill is there and evident like u said, but he has to adjust to NHL speed. Very important also to improve his skating this offseason, number one priority for him for sure.

All things said.....It was not a good debut.

Watched the game tonight. That penalty on him was ridiculous in the 1st period. Just a bad weak call. I wonder if that got into his head a little bit.

I missed the game. Sounds like it wasn't the ideal start, but there's obviously a lot of season left. He will be a star in this league for sure. I'm going to make certain that I catch some of his games soon. His talent and smarts are off the charts from what I've watched before, so I think it's only a matter of time before that translates to the NHL.

Was at the game tonight and specifically watched him during his shifts. 1st two periods very underwhelming. 3rd period he definitely started showing some flashes, is active and not afraid of traffic. Yeah he's gunna be good

Made an unreal pass to Frost he couldn’t bury, made a few meh plays, you could tell there were jitters, kid is special you can see it lol. He’s gonna be fine, and faced a cup contender to boot, not like he faced some scrubs tonight, coulda easily had a point, excited for his next game.

I call it like I see it, it was not an impressive game. Whether it was due to jitters, adjusting to nhl speed or put on the wrong wing by Torts....the fact remains, it was not a good debut.

He had a good 3rd period when they switched him back to RW, but as a whole, he wasn't good tonight.

He was o.k.

First game for a 20 year old kid in the best league in the world where the pace is just faster then anything he's ever played in, he had some good looks out there.

Not everyone no matter how good is gonna score four in their first game like Matthews.

With the amount of overrating done here, this was to be expected.

Sharp kid out there though, I liked how he quickly spotted that seam in the defense in the 1st period and darted in to receive the pass and almost got himself a goal.

He will be a factor pretty quick, bet he even gets his first one in the next game, he strikes real quick, cobra like.

Yup I just said he was overrated which he is right now going by some of the comments, saying he will be better than Crosby just because he saw a couple videos of him. Better than Bedard, and the list goes on...

He will be good and I'm not even rootint against him, but there will be growing pains. He isn't in the same league as those players. Maybe one day.

It goes with the territory here with the heavily hyped ones He will take his lumps just like pretty much every rookie. Just because Celebrini had a goal and an assist in his first game people around here will start overhyping him right now but you can be sure he is gonna have some rough patches this year.

Who knows what this kids ultimate upside is . He's got great skills and sure knows how to make things happen. Having said that he is by no means a perfect prospect.

Not that he needs to be under the microscope for every game that he plays, but it went exactly how I thought it would. Everything directed at or around the net - excellent. The medium -> low pass directed towards the net. The pass from behind the net to in front. The spin move to the front for a great chance. Plus...the no angle shot that led to the delay of game. That's his game. That's the game that I've seen his whole career.

If something isn't being directed towards the net, you get a little bit more of a mixed bag. Most egregiously, that pass attempt from the boards into the middle that was perfectly on the tape of Brock Boeser (?) and not recovering a loose puck that was six feet from him late in the game. Excellent hands, excellent shot, very high-end playmaking directed towards the net line. But the playmaking in other layers and lanes...well, certainly not "generational". It's exactly the game that I've seen with him since he was 16. He is technically excellent, folks downplaying that to play up his playmaking in space isn't how I see it. That doesn't mean you (royal you) have to see it that way though, folks can see things as they see fit, of course...

LOL, I'm not seeing Bedard setting the league on fire. Michkov looked pretty good to me. Haters even worse than the fanboys over here.

What has Bedard done to put him in a different league exactly?
