RW Liam Greentree - Windsor Spitfires, OHL (2024, 26th, LAK)

As a Kings fan, I am super excited about him, which is probably the kiss of death.
Best case scenario, he makes the team out of camp and like Laferriere doesn't ever set foot in Ontario

Laferriere was drafted after his u19 then spent another 2 years in college. Greentree was drafted after his u18, so it's either back to the OHL or stays with the Kings.

The OHL needs to consult Windsor's season ticket holders :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, I focus on watching Greentree and not so much the rest of the teammates. So I won't get into it as far as who has been tbe "real" MVP. But to me, Greentree has one major issue, and that's his defensive sense. I don't think his skating is as bad as advertised.

But defensively, he fails at identifying threats on the ice, and when presented with multiple options to neutralizing incoming threats, he struggles to pick the ideal path.

But he uses his size to protect the puck well. He has very good senses offensively, and not only does he have a wide arsenal of shots, but he uses them in the right circumstances. He has great vision, too, where he knows how to find his teammates.

If Protas is better than that. Good for him. He'd be a great add to the Kings too. But I'm happy with this pick.

I agree. If there's one thing I trust the Kings org to do though...

But the diversity of his offensive skillset is amazing, I think that bodes well for an NHL career. He's not elite at any one thing, but he can score in a lot of ways, and most of them deal with going to the net/tough areas.

I just remember being more impressed with him at camp than most players from the standpoint of 1. using his teammates to generate and 2. using his size to protect. Very advanced in those areas.

Bud seems to go completely unnoticed, but is wrecking teams on the regular.

That's because if you bring him up anywhere but this thread you'll have a few special someones seek you out to tell you he's a product of Protas, so we speak of Greentree only in whispers

but he already looked special amongst pros at camp, it's nice to see it affirmed with a huge year.

Protas is sick, but Greentree is the driver on that line

Too bad for him he was drafted by LA. Will have a hard time scoring more than 50pts there and this will affect his earnings. Fantasy wise, I think Protas is much more advisable

5G and 1 assist in the playoffs vs a 100pt rangers team (in 68 games)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Wonder what the odds are of him making the kings next year. Even as a 3rd/4th liner.

I think many teams would prefer the Wyatt Johnston route, as you suggested, but we already saw the Kings presented with a similar situation with Brandt Clarke and chose to send him back to junior to play with his prey, and then spend almost an entire season in the minors the year after that in his age 20 season. There has been very little admitting or learning from developmental mistakes, so I have a hard time believing he has much of a chance to make the Kings next season.

The Kings have only given direct to NHL roles to players who came up from the older and more defensively structured NCAA (and those were O20 players).

I really hope they keep him up in the NHL. I don't completely agree with the notion he has "nothing to prove" in the OHL, as I do feel there's intrinsic value to being put in a leading role again. For example, despite playing on the PK, he still has trouble identifying and neutralizing threats in his zone. So, the OHL is a good avenue to build on that to some degree.

But I ultimately think he would benefit more in the NHL. Put him with Byfield and Fiala, give him time on the powerplay, and challenge him to grow.

Yeah it's tough to say what league seems best next year...I will say one of the pleasant surprises was that often, when junior phenoms show up at camp, theyr'e not great at using and supporting their teammates since the can often do it all themselves; the only two in recent memory that impressed me with how well they played as teammates were Byfield and Greentree. Liam in particular was an absolute machine at this, made tons of small helpful plays, works hard to get himself open to help others have options, etc. He's pro-ready from the 'team understanding' standpoint. Obviously raw in other ways...so I can see the merit in having him continue to build strength and leading skills at a junior level, becasue I don't think he'll have much of a pro game learning curve. Might as well maximize his offensive time so he doesn't get buried and lost like, say, Pinelli.

Boston's loss will be LA's gain, Greentree is going to make a solid NHLer even if the skating doesn't improve.

Really like this kid’s game. Still not sure if trading away this pick + a 2nd to move up to grab Hage was the right decision, but time will tell. I think really wanting a potential 2C prospect is what might have pushed the scale of Hage over Greentree for the Habs but I hope they both flourish.

Grabbing Carter George with that 2nd was a nice cherry on top. Always good when a trade works out good for both teams.
