how things have turned for this guy...

Wouldn't be to hard on him as a Leaf fan. He and Nylander showed chemistry at the end of the season with Modo. Both on and off the ice. They stayed after practice to work on things together. So you might see him on your own team one day...

To me he seems like a bit of a "dude" who's staring to show some signs that he's taking things a bit more seriously nowadays and the main question going forward is whether he actually is good enough at hockey to be an NHLer. Already looks like an ok player at the SHL level.

When I saw him in the ECHL, he just dominated. Didn't see him at all in the AHL, but heard it wasn't good. If the guy is playing with another skilled forward he can still be that wild card, high end player. Just like he was with Zlobin when they won the Mem cup together.

Well if he puts it together why the hell not. I never like prospect going in a bad way.

And some folks defended him for it. "It's not big deal", "He's just a kid, he'll mature", "Practice? We talkin' bout practice. Not a game. Practice", etc. Okay the last one might have been referring to another player and another controversy. :sarcasm:

IMO, it was a decent attempt at a homerun swing by Garth. But at the end of the day, Kabanov simply never had the ability and never produced like his "hype" suggested. The only thing he had going for him was his stickhandling. Every other part of his game was average to below average.

Eh, but at the same time were he a better player then I'm not sure we'd hear about that practice scandal ever again. I think his failures were more as a hockey player than as a person. Then again he did change agents 6 times so what do I know.

Turns out all the hype about this kid, turned out to be bull. Never dominated in juniors, never did squat in training camps or down in the minors. He showed flashes, but he really never had the talent he was hyped up to have. Not a great skater, has a weak shot, ZERO hockey sense, really his only skill that he has is he's a very good stick handler, and that's about it. Really a shame, loved the 2010 draft, Niederreiter, Nelson and Kabanov, and all we have left to show for it is Nelson. Thankfully Kabanov wasn't a 1st round pick, he was a 3rd round pick, worth the gamble, swung for the fences and struck out mightily.

Kabanov is somewhat overhyped. His father is really good with the PR moves, extremely good. He knows how to get into news, TV etc. Due to his father Kabanov is probably the most recognized hockey prospect in Russia, but he is not as good as Tarasenko, who has more of natural scoring talent.

This post from the 1st page though...

Any rumors about this kid being invited to an NHL training camp?

He's signed with Skellefteå in the SHL, which is a good choice from a development point of view. Probably focusing on getting a prominent role on the team there and use it as a way back to become a legit NHL prospect again. Doubt he'll go to any NHL training camps this year. He did look ok in the SHL last year so it'll be interesting to follow him this season.

Thanks for the info. Hope it works out for him.

Fans, coaches and teammates in Modo really loved him last season, he's really fun to watch at times. I just can't see him keeping it up over a full season though.

Agree 100%. Nothing ever wrong with picks like this. Take your shots and hope you get lucky, that's all third rounders are anyway. Smart to swing for the fences. No knock there.

Oh, but that Niederreiter trade. THAT is where you can fault Garth...

Kirill Kabanov seems to have shaken the islanders disease and looks completely dominant right now.

6 points in 3 games.

Shaken the Isles disease? Are those NHL numbers? Oh no? Yeah ok.

Skellefteå AIK has turned his career around. Whatever the Isles did in trying to develop him obviously didn't work. There must have been some dissonance there.

Yeah. Being expected to play a 200 ft game and give a consistent effort like they demanded of kids like Brock Nelson, Lee and Strome .... oh the inhumanity of it all
:sarcasm:

Well, he left a losing organisation where he wasn't being trusted to use the offensive skills he had and is now on a championship winning team where the coaches trusts him and suddenly he leads the team offensively. Good for Kirill Kabanov.

But by all means, be ******** about it.

He wasn't the one coming in here with terms like "shaken the Islanders disease" - or was he?

The point is he's played 3 games in a non-NHL environment. Let's not proclaim him cured of anything quite yet.

But by all means, be ********* about it.

:shakehead:shakehead:help:
Some people on here never fail to amuse me. Its been 3 games, again 3 GAMES, you really think that makes a player? Well if thats the case I guess the Isles should offer him a max contract, because clearly he is the best player in the world now, and he is a superstar offensively. He is so good offensively that he was able to manage 12 points in that last 2 seasons in the AHL!! If thats not impressive I don't know what is, or how about his almost PPG numbers in the great ECHL, the guy is the next Gretzky for sure. And now he has 3 points (Not 6) in three SEL Games.

But really the sole reason he isn't known as the greatest player in the world is because of the Islanders. He was never given the chance that he so obviously deserved, his numbers speak for themselves.

Last yr the isles demoted Strome to the ahl, telling him he needed to play a 200 ft game.

After the lockout ended, they left Brock Nelson in the NHL, saying continue to work hard, play a 200 ft game.

Isles did not demand anything from Kabanov, that they have not demanded from their other young forwards. Or do you think the franchise had one set of rules for Lee/Strome/Nelson and another for Kabanov?

You don't need every single player to play a 200 ft game. You'd do better if you played to every player's strength. If they're willing to play a two-way game, that's great, but if they're not, try to make them even better defensively/offensively to make up for it or just surround them with guys that do.

With that said, this is no indication of Kabanov being some amazing player they ****ed with. It's 3 games and it's not the NHL.

As an Islanders fan, I could honestly couldn't care less about Kabanov.

He didn't make much effort to succeed as an Islander. I'm not really sure what this has to do with the Islanders.

The Islanders don't even have their top offensive players playing 200 foot games. They just want them to contribute in the defensive zone and support teammates to get the puck up ice, as opposed to floating waiting for the puck to get on your stick like Ovechkin does.
