"This [Russian] is going to be differentâ€.

lol

Not sure what being Russian has to do with not having the hockey sense to be an effective NHL player, especially without the physical tools to compensate.

He was a high risk high reward prospect to begin with, I'm not sure what Russia has to do with anything when it has been North Americans exaggerating about his potential.

It's really fun to see how well Kabanov is playing in SHL. Since after the Olympics he has almost been dominating out there. 4+1 in the 4 latest games and a total of 6+2 in 11 games (first 3 games he had about 5 mins TOI). He seems to fit in really well with the team and I really can't see how this kid was a problem child.

Seen him in some NHL preseason and ECHL games. Dummied the ECHL and made some high end skilled plays in his preseason stint. The offense is there, maybe just needed a change in scenery, seems to be finding his game just fine in Modo.

Is his 3 year ban from Russia up ? I could have swore some of his statements got him banned from playing in Russia.

Wasn't he projected as a top 5 pick at one point?

Breaking news: 3rd round pick doesn't make NHL, more at 11.

duke--you give leaf fans a bad name. He was projected to be a top 10 pick going into his draft year and then things went wrong and red flags of warning went up. The pictures of him on the trade board, neck tattoo and looking like he should be in rehab scare me

According to his Facebook, he asked to be bought out. Didn't feel like he was given a chance with the Islanders, even at the AHL level.

When he saw that Brent Thompson was returning to be the head coach of Bridgeport, he probably knew he had no shot at cracking the roster there.

I knew there was something to not like about Brent Thompson

To be honest, that is pure specualtion on my part. Regardless if that's true or not, Kabanov is just not cut out to be a pro, dating back to his first day as a pro when he was late for Isles camp.

That was incredible, being late on your first day when trying to rehabilitate your image literally days after the draft.

And some folks defended him for it. "It's not big deal", "He's just a kid, he'll mature", "Practice? We talkin' bout practice. Not a game. Practice", etc. Okay the last one might have been referring to another player and another controversy. :sarcasm:

IMO, it was a decent attempt at a homerun swing by Garth. But at the end of the day, Kabanov simply never had the ability and never produced like his "hype" suggested. The only thing he had going for him was his stickhandling. Every other part of his game was average to below average.

Forget the tool or toolbox...this kid was the whole dang tooltruck. Emphasis on the word 'tool', that is.

You can't coach or teach desire.

and there were other off ice stuff as well. The fact 29 teams passed on him should be his wake up call. I know we can not talk about it or speculate about it, but I am concerned about how "out of it" he looked in many of his pictures and I think this scared off many teams
