I don't have a source either but I also heard something like this. At the very least, I believe Michalek opted to have his NTC remain in effect after the trade (I think generally speaking, players have this choice and it's usually not reported on. Can anyone confirm?).

I seem to have heard NMC come up with him and the trade as well, though I haven't heard of any precedent to this where a player has "upgraded" their NTC to a NMC unofficially in order to accept a trade? It seems odd.

I suppose the circumstances can make it a fairly reasonable result. Consider a scenario where Ottawa is considering sending Michalek to the AHL. They come to Michalek and say "Hey, the Leafs want to trade for you, and it will be good for you because they have smaller forward depth and it means you'll be able to stick in the NHL", and Michalek says "Fine, if that's the case, then Toronto should be able to agree to NMC".

To be honest, no one is entirely sure what happens once a player drops his NTC. Most insiders believe that once a player drops his NTC, it's his new team's choice whether or not to continue to honour it.

So it's unlikely that Michalek has his NTC in tact post trade.

That would be completely wrong. The "insiders" don't believe it works that way, just the confused outsiders.

If a player has a NTC or NMC and agrees to waive it to be traded that NTC/NMC remains in full force with the new team.

The only time where players can "lose" a NTC or NMC from their contract is if they're traded before the clause is scheduled to go into effect. The acquiring team can choose to honor the clause in that situation though I'm not aware of that ever happening.

Michalek still has his NTC.

Awesome to see him carrying the Marlies and stepping up to the plate to start the year. I hope he keeps this going and can do the same thing Nylander did last year playing all the games in the NHL after the trade deadline. Let him dominate the AHL most of the year and then make space in the top 9 for him in the NHL.

It really feels like everything has clicked for him so far this year. He's had spotty consistency before, but he seems much more assertive so far this year. His skating is unreal, and he seems to be willing to play a much more direct game and is looking to challenge the defenders cushion at every opportunity. I don't think one Leafs prospect has improved their standing with me this season than Kapanen (I expected Nylander, Matthews and Marner to be very high-end). Obviously, I would still trade Kapanen for the right package still, but I'd be very reluctant to throw him into a deal with how he has started this year. If the Leafs are out of the playoffs hunt by the TDL and we are sellers, I really hope he gets a call up and sticks if he maintains this sort of play.

Seems like a guy that is benefiting with a slower development curve. Hes learning to adjust, use his line mates and use his speed with a purpose. He was always skating very fast would get to his destination and then try and figure out what he would do next. Where as now hes skating somewhere knowing what his next move will be.

His shot is actually quite impressive. I think this is a 20/20 nhl player.

Show me a source for that because I'm nearly 100 percent convinced that is not true.

But thanks for being condescending

He's definitely going to get the Nylander treatment this year, he'll be up with the club after TDL and stay there.

Kapanen is 20 years old and it's promising to see him start the season on the right note. ~PPG will be very impressive.

I'd love to see him dominate the AHL this year.

People forget that had he been a North American player, he would have been in the CHL last year (unless he decided to go to College).

Still very young.

No reason to do anything with Kapanen this year. Let him come up next year as a promotion and don't even consider moving him for needs.

Yup. Now time to give him the Detroit treatment and over cook him to the point he is oozing confidence and comes up ready to prove management was wrong for keeping him down so long.

I think he will be our 2nd line W of the future.

Nah, he won't be held down long because of his many superior attributes.

I was thinking the same thing . When a players signs a contract, only he can agree to waive certain aspects of it to his own detriment.

If a team was allowed to disregard the NTC part of the contract, all teams would sign certain players to NMC extensions and trade them quick to a new team who now would have the luxury of a player with no guard against future trade or waivers.

But now, he instead had nearly 100 games in the Finnish men's main league from the 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons under his belt when coming to North America. I wonder if the Auston Matthews route of going to Europe before the NHL eligibility age will become a thing for the most talented North American youngsters and if so, will the NA junior leagues react to it in some way.

Definitely a good prospect. I'm predicting some time in the near future he'll go pointless a few games in a row and a bunch of people will say, "this kid is so raw and inconsistent, he will never be an NHL regular"

This doesn't make any sense to me. That is not to imply I don't think it's true.

It does sound somewhat familiar though.

It's great to hear him playing so well! I have always been very high on him because of his ridiculous tools and because of our new shiny toys (Laine, Puljujärvi and Aho) he gets very little attention in Finland.

Compared to other prospects his skating, shot and hands combo is one of the best in the whole world. He just needs to put consistent effort and you have a good top 6 winger. Will definetely try to watch Toronto's games when he gets a call up this season.
