From the last 5 drafts, which team that drafted in the top-2 has had less secondary scoring than the current Rangers, especially now that they traded away their 2nd line center? It's so clear that Rangers doesn't have as much star players in their teams than your average team would have. So am I wrong to say I don't wish Rangers' most talented player to be playing with players clearly inferior to him? Laine got everything handed to him on a silver platter and even Matthews got to play mostly with Nylander in his draft year and people still said he was so underutilized back then. And there are many other examples of young players immediately getting to play with their team's best players.
We might sign Panarin in the offseason. Before Quennville signed with Florida, we were considered the overwhelming favorites to sign him.
Being able to play with Panarin and Chytil/Kravtsov wouldn’t be bad. At least one elite NHL’er and two highly talented prospects with real first line upside or better.
And if we trade Kreider, they might choose to use him on a line with Zibanejad and Buchnevich. If he’s better than those two immediately, he’s going to be one of the best players in the league eventually. Those two are no slouch. Kakko will eventually surpass them, but I don’t think it’ll be right away.
They aren’t going to put him with the grinders. He’ll play top six right away and I think there’s a good chance he’ll play first PP. We have a vacant spot in the left circle for a playmaker with Zuccarello’s departure. We might not have elite players around him, but our PP could be very good. Kreider is one of the best net front guys in the league and there aren’t that many who score better from the Ovechkin/Laine spot than Zibanejad. Buchnevich and DeAngelo are also very capable first unit players.
Another thing that I think Finns will like is that Quinn doesn’t hesitate to play his best players big minutes. He doesn’t freeze out the fourth line as much as some coaches do, but there are often big gaps between the top 2-4 forwards in TOI and the rest of the forwards. Quinn requires that all our forwards play a very in your face, physical style of hockey. He also tends to scratch every player on the team at some point. He did it to every young player on the team last season and some veterans. I don’t like it, but he doesn’t look at “scratches” the same way as most fans. He looks at it as if he’s giving players a game off to rest and improve on areas they might be struggling.
These are some of the things to watch for, assuming Hughes is picked first.
