Rewarding a guy for being terrible all year in the minors? I don't get it

Tell him to go home, get better and dominate the AHL like his brother did and then maybe he will get his shot at the NHL roster
That would send a completely wrong message for him and do more harm than good imo. The kid has struggleg this season no doubt, but you would be willing to let him go elsewhere to develop at the first sign of trouble? To get a shot in the big league is a good motivation boost for him if anything, especially to play against his older brother.

William played on the top team in the AHL that scored 114 pts and 294 goals. Alex played on a bottom 5 team in the AHL this year with 60 pts and 183 goals. A little different when you play on a powerhouse team. We are already eliminated from the playoffs, so why not give him a shot to play against his brother at home. It's only an hour drive from Rochester to give him a glimpse of NHL speed. He will most likely be one of the top 2-3 callups next year when injuries occur.

0.44 PPG as an 18 year old rookie in his first AHL season is terrible? Oh lord. I get if it's disappointing, but terrible. Give me a break.

Besides, it's more of a motivational thing. He'll get a sniff at the NHL and he'll want to prove he belongs there.

Not to mention William had ~80 more games of pro experience when coming to the A.

We've gone over this a half dozen times in this thread.

In Nylander's 18 year old season, the Marlies were a basement team. Hot trash. He came over mid-season, not acclimated to the smaller NA rink, put up close to a point per game and the team made the playoffs.

I've seen Alex play a lot this year. His line mates are far from the only problem.

He has been struggling this season, but I don't think comparisons for his brother are really fair (William had a lot more pro experience before) nor do I think they're even necessary. With his skillset, it's really only a matter of time he will start producing in the A and eventually in the NHL. If he was still playing in the OHL this year like most of his age group are, there wouldn't be any doubters with his around 100p season. He showed in the WJC what he is cabable of.

^^ a little typo there. Most of his age group are playing in the junior leagues atm, not all in the OHL obviously

Go through my posts. I've seen a majority of Marlie games and every game against Rochester. Only one of those games would I say he was impactful. Don't be too upset.

From just looking at the Points, a Little bit dissapointing season in the AHL, but its a different story to lit up a mens leauge compared to junior. Looks like he need to start next season in the AHL too? Or would it be better for him to get the chance in the NHL?

Or have he looked good, just not the numbers?

That's like 10% of his games and a couple of those were blowouts lol.

I'll be looking forward to seeing him debut tonight. Leafs got to make sure to keep close to him cause there's no denying he has the talent to make plays.

So you've seen him what 9-10 times out of 76 games?

How many times have you seen him? You can get a decent read on a guy in 8-10 games. Unless things have changed, most NHL scouts see players play 4-5 times in their draft seasons (according to Gare Joyce's book about scouts). It's not as ridiculous as you make it out, especially if you haven't seen him as much.

I'm not worried about him, but I do see a lot of rationalizations and excuses from Sabre fans making arguments I doubt they'd make for any player not in their organization.

I think it sends the wrong message to the rest of your prospect pool. His play has not earned him this spot, his draft position has. Teams should have it so the most deserving players get called up first. That's what the Leafs have done, and IMO they are becoming one of the premier development teams in the NHL.

Literally every other forward prospect in Rochester that is more deserving has already seen NHL time this season due to injuries. Baptiste, Bailey, Fasching, Rodriguez, plus vets like Schneider and O'Reilly. Also of note, nearly everyone looks better in Buffalo than Rochester. I don't know if this is a reward, as much as it is seeing if he can show better vs NHL competition.

That's interesting. I'm sure they're both excited to play against each other. Maybe Alex brings his A game like Will does whenever he faces his good friend Pastrnak.

There's a difference between scouting a player and watching a game in which a player is playing in

I've admittedly only watched him once (St.Johns vs Rochester) but you can tell he has the skill, at the very least. Broke into the zone a lot but this was during his cold streak so he didn't put up points

The best (opposition) forwards I've seen in St Johns have been he, Vrana, Kapanen

Why do people insist on giving their opinion when they obviously don't know what they're talking about

There's a difference between scouting a player and watching a game in which a player is playing in

So by this logic, no one on this site has any qualifications to say anything about any players unless they are on their team. I bet 98% never even watch their own minor league affiliates outside of highlights.
