4 years in Seattle gives like Larsson almost an extra full year of tax free money versus Edmonton.

I'm sure Larsson's agent pointed this out as this is his job and told him it was a significantly better deal.

Allen Walsh on a podcast stated that tax benefits are a myth. There are mechanisms in place in Canada to lower the tax impact significantly. Furthermore- if you play in Canada you get paid in US and expenses are in Canadian.

We offered him a 5th year. It wasn't about the money.

Addy, not disputing your claim but really curious what the driver was if it wasn’t cash.

Tychkowski wrote today in the Edm Sun:

Larsson checked off a lot of boxes, and at 28 years old, he was expected to be part of the Oilers for years to come. At his end-of-the-year exit interview, he made it very clear he wanted to be in Edmonton for the long haul.
“This team has something really good going here, I think it’s a bright future here,” he said just two months ago. “I love it here. I love the guys, the city, the fans, everything. I love everything around this organization.”

Just seems so odd as to what changed.

That was a bit of hyperbole, because the method to get out of tax that he presented basically requires you to live on a certain tropical island for a few years after your career is over without going to US/Canada during that time. So easier said than done.

This second point is bull shit.

Things aren't cheaper in Canada "just because". If you want to buy a Ferrari or even a standard car or a Playstation or a TV, the currency difference is factored in.

We don't pay the same price for most goods/items as Americans do because companies have no incentive to give Canadians the same products at a loss.

Larsson's too good of a guy to trash the org but there has to be something more to this.

I mean consider the ride he's been on since arriving in 2016:

- Brought here in a trade that was almost universally panned. I mean even if he never looked at twitter it was all over TV for months.
- 1 decent playoff run in 16-17
- Misses playoffs for 2 straight years
- Multiple back injuries
- Dad dies
- Breaks his fibula
- Another back injury
- 2 straight first round exits

That's a tough stretch for anyone.

Unless anything comes out that's concrete saying a problem in Edmonton either with fans directly or inside the room I wouldn't really put much extra thought into it.

I saw that and would have liked to see more of an explanation from him about that. My tax law friends say that must be bullshit, and I've heard agents say it as well.

Uh what math are you doing there?

It's 1.7 million more for the term of his contract. Larsson would make 2.11 actual post-tax money in Edmonton per year ($4 million contract) ... $1.7 million over 4 years is almost an entire year's worth of difference in take home salary for Larsson.

It's significant.
Income Tax Calculator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
2.45 mill take home/year

Income Tax Calculator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
2.1 mill

So it's 1.4mill over the entire contract, but that doesn't include the difference in cost of living in Seattle. Which if he was to buy a place, the difference would heavily go there.

Players also get paid usd so it goes further here

2.1 mill usd is 2.64 mill Canadian

1.) No one's forcing him to buy a place in Seattle.

2.) Even if he did, the valuation of the real estate will stay high because it's a very in demand market. He can buy a condo there and sell it in 3-4 years likely at a profit.

3.) The condo he buys could large be paid by that extra 1.4 million, lol, so he's getting a place in Seattle "for free" in a sense.

Is it kinda weird for a GM to have a presser? Has to be something? Or could a general presser before the draft?

Hamilton is a better version of Barrie. Bigger, faster, better shot, etc.

Comes down to salary for me. If Hamilton costs $8M per year and Barrie costs $4.5M I would actually take Barrie. The more that salary difference closes, the more I lean towards Hamilton.

Hyman coming in at 4.9M would be amazing. Idc about years 6-8 if he’s competitive during our window it’s not a big deal.

Rumour is they r talking to Hamilton
This is NOT a rumour.

This was speculation by Seravalli that the Oilers COULD be a dark horse to pursue Hamilton. The Oilers are NOT actively pursuing Dougie Hamilton.

To be clear:
1) No one from the Oilers organization has claimed this.
2) Gregor + Stauffer has dismissed this as "pie in the sky"
3) Frank was observing that this would be a good fit.
4) There is no indication that Hamilton would like to play in Alberta again after the Calgary fiasco.

Speaking of the Calgary fiasco: Why did the Flames make the Dougie Hamilton trade?

Christian Roatis @ FlamesNation said:
It sure sounds like they felt Hamilton’s personality became an issue, for whatever reason, and that the locker room was affected by it. Sportsnet’s John Shannon was on SN960 following the trade as well and said issues with Hamilton included “when the entire team would go for lunch at Moxie’s, Hamilton would go to a museum.”

Yikes. Save that for Hockey Taeks Hall of Fame. We would be foolish to assume that Hamilton skipping out on lunch for museums is the motivator for this trade, but it sure seemed like Hamilton wasn’t as integrated into the locker room as the Flames would’ve liked.

Some of us (read: everyone at FN) think that’s an absurd reason to deal someone when they’re an incredible value add on the ice, but after the Vegas Golden Knights turned an atomic-tight dressing room bond into a Stanley Cup Final appearance, it’s clear the Flames brass feel differently.
It’s no secret Treliving felt his player mix was an issue and contributed to the team missing the playoffs, and trading Hamilton for Hanifin – who is already tight with Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk through USA Hockey – would be an upgrade in the room, if not on the ice.

More than Hamilton not wanting to play for Edmonton, I question whether he would be a fit for the Oilers dressing room.

lol- by your logic the cost of living is the same for every place on earth…

Honestly, that Hamilton didn't fit in with Calgary's band of dirtbags just makes him more appealing.
