I understand this perspective but this is a 26 year old forward locked up at under $4M for 2 more seasons. This is essentially the JT Miller deal right there for the taking.

This guy is a big time scorer and young enough to give the Oilers at least 4-5 more high quality years right through McDrai's prime. This is exactly the type of deal Holland should be looking at, not the OEL unicorn chasing. I could see Rakell for 14th overall being a real good fit for both teams.
14oa + Koskinen + Samorukov for Gibson + Rakell :naughty:

And I get what you’re saying but the reason why Vancouver could make that deal is because they have some notable prospects in the pipeline. We just don’t. After two years, Rakell is due for significant raise.

Rakell is interesting. 30 goal scorer who has seen his shooting percentage and PDO drop sharply over the last two seasons. There is a possibility he’s following the Cheechoo career arc.

Pretty thorough article to add a bit of perspective to the whole OEL saga...

Gauging league perception of Ekman-Larsson’s game, his contract and the wisdom of trading him

Just a little blurb that I tend to agree with. I personally believe that the Coyotes would be foolish to trade their captain. But from the player's perspective, he's been through a lot in Arizona. And if he's the one looking at the door, I don't see a lot of leverage for Bill Armstrong.

They’re in a tough spot, that deal like many of the long term deals teams hand out to guys in their late 20’s/early 30’s are signed under the assumption of them being fair value for the first few years with the likelihood that they could be anchors in the last 2-3 seasons but that inflation of the cap would make it manageable. In their case they’ve got a flat cap in those early years and it’s going to be nowhere near where it was expected to be in those anchor years. It’s a contract many teams in this cap world won’t have interest in or ability to take on without sending some bad money back. Then you take into account that the player has been trending down and you can say it’s the coaching but really it’s going to affect his value because a good GM shouldn’t pay a premium because of what he did in 2017 or what he might do on a new team, you pay for what he is today, still a very good player but showing signs of slowing down with a big cap hit for 7 more seasons.

Between his nmc and the flat cap I don’t think they’re going to find a trade this year that brings back good value while also not taking back a siZeable salary commitment for 2-3 seasons. They might just have to bite the bullet and take either poor value with almost no money coming back or take decent value along with some cap coming back. If they hold onto him another year and he has another poor season they’ll really be in a bad spot as he’ll start trending into dump territory.

Sure Khaira isn't the greatest 3rd/4th liner but I still have plenty of respect for him especially after what he did against Cal Clutterbuck.

This isn't respect worthy for a borderline NHL player who is supposed to play a physical/tough game.

Khaira has what, 6 inches on Clutterbuck? Clutterbuck also isn't known as a tough customer.

Khaira should he scrapping & playing physical on a consistent basis, not every once every 10-12 games.

I don't care if Khaira fights every 2nd game. But his concentration and mind seem to drift all too often, and he rarely initiates anything. For a guy his size and where he is in the lineup, he needs to initiate, and be involved.

He does play a physical/tough game. He contributes to the PK in a significant way. The issue is the extra $400k he's making versus the replacement-level forward who probably fares a bit better at even strength. Khaira's a tough read for me. Is he the primary cause or are those stats a result of those fourth line struggles?

One thing's for certain. He'll never find himself beside RNH in the top six again.

I still say when looking at everything RNH+Russell+2020 1st for OEL+Kuemper makes the most sense for everyone. Arizona can say they got a star forward and high pick back for OEL. Arizona can also resign RNH next summer for significantly less up front then what they had to pay OEL most likely. Or he gets traded again at the deadline and they get back another 1st rounder.

Sounds to me the same problem we're currently having with Kassian.

Play good until you get a long term contract and then vanish off the face of the Earth.

Take out Ozzie Smith and insert Zack Kassian.

I can't say that I agree. I don't see a deep prospect pool in Vancouver at all, are they even superior to the Oilers prospect pool?

Are Podkolzin, Hoglander and DiPietro? more notable than Broberg, Bouchard and Samorukov?
I guess you can add Hughes at the time of the Miller trade but then you also add Yamamoto, Bear and Jones.

If 14 OA is on the table, I think it'll be sat on until draft day. If a player Holland really likes is there, he's not trading the pick. Any deal involving OEL or whoever will then have to be be reworked or OEL gets dealt elsewhere.

Hey guys, Quick question I have been reading that 14th overall might be in play. My question is would either of these proposals from the Rangers get it done?

1(22) and Buchnevich or
1(22) and Georgiev

i would do the Georgiev one, but why would Nyr do that when they bought out Hank?

If you could get move from 22 to the 14th and only costs your backup goalie, I think you have to do it. Shesterkin is the clear cut #1. Hank was bought out for 2 reasons.
1- needed to get rid of the 3 headed monster in net
2- cutting salary

OEL will always be based on price. I would be concerned if bouchard is included. What I also see if that happens is a of jam in the left defense. It creates more headaches and pushes another player out.

For Rangers. I would take a crack at Lundquist but would not make it a real hope. 1st and Georgiev would be a no brainer for me.

I would do either one. Prefer the one with Georgiev. We get a guy that can backup Kosko for fairly cheap next year and hopefully take over as the starter when the Kosko contract is over.

I think the talk of signing Barrie is based on the idea that we are trading them Bouchard. Just no. And I get that adding OEL as a top pairing D has appeal, but even when we traded Pronger the return was such that it fit in how they constructed their team, even if the value was okay (arguable I know)

Bouchard and Bear are the future of our right side. Both are untouchable in my eyes. No thanks on Barrie. The Rangers buying out Shatty, and then St.Louis having buyers remorese on Faulk have me gunshy.

As for Broberg, that's tricky because it seems like if we had OEL, we might as well give up at least 1 LHD to them so they can play someone respectable. But it better not be Klef or Nurse PLUS Broberg

Agree to disagree. I think are d prospects are better but their current forward prospects are better.
