Don't get why people would want Bjugstad.

Dude mailed it in his entire time here, couldn't leave to go back to his nothingburger team fast enough, and then played the next few games he had against Edmonton like they were his personal Stanley Cup.

Hard pass.

We watch the same player? Pretty a majority will disagree about his effort here...

But agree they should aim higher.

That's why he's a waste of assets. You're paying a huge price for a 62 point guy who only got there because he was playing Bouchard-esque PP minutes.

Matheson had 21 5v5 points last year. One more than Cody Ceci. He isn't going to be playing 3+ minutes of PP per game here, so that's what you'll be getting from him.
Well obviously any deal depends on price. We don't know what a deal will look like, so giving up based on make believe scenarios isn't a good plan. Matheson and Fowler are at least sort of comparable. Folwer with the longer track record of consistency and name recognition vs Matheson having more recent success and younger. Fowler didn't go for all that much. I can't see Matheson going for way more.

Maybe Matheson being good on the PP is a good thing. Bouch has had his struggles this year. Maybe having a Matheson take some PP reps frees up some pressure on Bouch and lets him reset and refocus. Regardless, one cherry picked stat doesn't tell the whole story. Matheson over the course of his career is a .43 ppg dman. Ceci is .27 ppg. Stecher is .22. Obviously Matheson is an upgrade moving the puck and producing.

Also, Nurses best seasons have come with guys like Barrie and has rebounded now with Stecher/Kulak. Style wise, Matheson is similar but produces better, so could work well with Nurse. I don't know if Matheson is the perfect target, but of guys that are realistically available and affordable, he's worth looking into.

I don’t think Bjugstad mailed it in at all. I just don’t think he’s a particularly effective bottom 6 player but is only good enough to get top 6 time on bad teams.

Matheson's metrics over the past three seasons are actually way worse than Ceci's haha.

Like we're talking bottom 10 in the league bad if it weren't for Ducks/Sharks players.
If it weren't for Ducks and Sharks players? Why do they get a pass but Montreal players don't? The Canadiens haven't exactly been contenders either over the past number of years and have clearly been rebuilding since losing Price.

I'm shocked at how much people are ripping Mike Matheson. I mean guys are you for real? This is a top 4 guy. It's not like we'd be putting Corey Potter with Nurse. Matheson is a legit top 4 defender.

I'm shaking my head reading some of these comments

Oilers not making a change in net means no cup. It’s simple as that and I am quite baffled that management doesn’t see this as a weakness.
Then pack it up. Might as well end the season here. Didn't alot of you guys, including me, end the season last year in November?

In regards to Matheson. Member when Jultz couldn't carry the Oilers defense with a bunch of talented but defensively inept forwards but then went to the Penguins and produced really well in a more realistic role and won the cup. Pepperidge farm remembers

Edited because Pepperidge Farms has Alzheimer's.

You're always shocked when people don't want every single player Stauffer talks about haha.

Stauffer caters to the casual fan that just looks at stuff like TOI and points. Actually look into the player and you'll see they aren't the slam dunks Stauffer is trying to feed you.

I think your Pepperidge farm has Alzheimer's because Schultz won the cup in Pittsburgh, not Washington.

He's playing less minutes against elites per game and less 5v5 minutes per game than Kulak this season.

He isn't playing some impossible role. He just plays 6.5 minutes of special teams per game.
Yes but playing all those Special Teams minutes wears on a player at even strength. I'd assume that he'd be a more effective player if his minutes are simply more even strength based

Hard disagree there. Even strength minutes will wear a player down far more than special teams.

Shaving off 3 minutes of PP and maybe a minute of PK per game probably just craters his offensive production and that's about it.

That Caleb Desnoyers is a work horse, a go getter. Some teams at the bottom going to take notice of this center. Maybe some teams will free up some player to gain some draft capital for him too. Don't see much of the Q. Just lucky to see half a game.

No, what I'm saying is if he plays the same amount of even strength minutes here in a #4 role with minimal Special Teams minutes, he'll have more energy conserved for even strength assumably without those extra 4-5 minutes sapping his energy.

Intended role? He plays top pair for Montreal with a rookie and a garbage team.

Here, he’d be on the 2nd pair with a good top 4 Dman.
Yeah. MTL doesn;t mind geting rid of him b/c they suck and they think he is blocking younger guys. They don't care if he is good for the most part. They are not winning anything.

No clue how people can keep defending Bouchard over and over.
I like to think that you have a sleep paralysis demon that looks like Bouchard and that's why you're so ignorant about the VAST array of good things he does.

I don’t think Bjugstad mailed it in at all. I just don’t think he’s a particularly effective bottom 6 player but is only good enough to get top 6 time on bad teams.
yep. And Bjugstad got absolutely curbstomped against Vegas. Hard pass on that guy.

Like I said though, all reducing his special teams is going to do is see his PP production disappear. Playing 3 minutes of PP isn't going to make you too tired to play 16 minutes of 5v5 at full capacity.

And if that's the plan, why not actually target a player who provides most of their value at 5v5? Matheson is a guy who produces little offense and struggles defensively at 5v5. Pretty much his entire value right now is that he plays a ton of special teams.

And that's not even touching on how bad of a fit he is with Nurse. Matheson is an agent of chaos out there. He's athletic and all over the map. Nurse plays well with guys who are reliable and who keep things simple because he struggles to read and react. Watch any boneheaded play by Nurse last year and it will be preceded by Ceci doing something absolutely nonsensical right before it.

What were their respective save percentages the 3 seasons prior? Post those, lmao
I await your reply

They lost by 1 goal to them, a goal late in the 3rd after destroying Minnesota and Vegas and being one of the hottest teams in the league. The overreactions around here are absurd even for HFOil standards.
I don't care what happened 3 years before. Rosters change. I care about what is happening now. Everybody always says goalies are Voodoo right?

I just don't get the defending to no end. He is average. Bogles my mind that people don't want to win a cup. Excuse me, they do, but it has to be with California closets.

Like going into the playoffs with a 200 pound backpack on your back for McDrai

Answer this for me

If Skinner is on this SJ team to start the year, does he have those Blackwood numbers his first 2.5 months? Does Blackwood have better numbers here?

I highly highly doubt it. That's all I look at when I look at goalies who I have watched. Their movements, puck tracking, and athleticism. How many high dangers they face.

I also think about "hey, goalies on crap teams get shelled more, so their save % could be higher from it overall. Maybe on a good shot supression team, it doesn't translate?"

I still think Skinner would absolutely flounder in a situation like SJ if the roles were reversed. He is more of a "let the puck hit him goalie". He makes the odd reactions save, like the nice one on Kucherov. Sometimes a side to side save. He just doesn't make enough of the clutch big saves.

Matheson isn't the guy I'd target. His microstats show his defense is pretty porous and he heavily relies on oodles of PP time to produce. He plays PK but he's not very good at it.

Honestly I don't see much of a need to break up Nurse-Kulak either. It's working. I think we need to target a guy that's an upgrade on Stetcher. Perhaps another Kulak type strong #5 that can play top four if needed.

How would you rank these targets? Any of them realistic?

Marcus Pettersson
Ryan Pulock
Jake Walman
Alexandre Carrier
Bowen Byram
Pettersson and Carrier probably the most realistic.

I like Walman but I don't like buying high.

Pulock is the most expensive and has a full NTC, probably least realistic.

Byram would be fun but I think Buffalo would be looking for a similarly aged piece for him rather than the stuff and things we could scrape together.
