Imagine Vegas had this attitude two years ago and decided to just do nothing and stand pat with Broissoit. We are in the 2023 Cup Finals then.

It's not that hard to find a goalie higher than like 60th in the league for GSAA, there's literally 60 options there, get one.

No one says you have to f***ing marry the goalie you acquire, at least have some options. Vegas had an option in our series. It changed the series entirely and got them .930 goaltending all the way to a Cup.
Adin Hill was just Cam Ward in a funny hat. We ripped him to shreds last game and he hasn't been that great outside of that one playoffs. Same with Binnington. Sometimes it just happens.

There you go with a flair for the dramatic again. It wasn't some special insight. It was need.
Broissioit had hip surgery, and Lehners struggles surfaced. They needed a backup for their rookie Thompson and depth

Hill was also SJs worst goalie att with Reimer and Kahkonen outplaying him

You keep coming on here trying to make it sound like some grand move of GM brilliance

He's also been low key one of their best dmen this year and for the first time in years the playoffs are a possibility for them.

He's playing at a 35-point pace and a team-leading +14

Yeah, it would definitely be an off the board pick up. I didn't say it was likely, similar to the Ekholm deal. But Ottawa making the playoffs? C'mon...

No one has mentioned it yet but I believe Bob name dropped “The Guy” on The 880 Ched Pregame show yesterday. It’s Mike Matheson. He also name dropped Marcus Pettersson later on as well as a guy who can stop the cycle and has a bit of size And is friends with Ekholm and Arvidsson.

Why exactly, would Montreal give us Matheson? He is a very valuable piece for them. He is also on a not terrible contract ($4.8 for this/next year) and is young enough to be part of the solution there at 30 years old. Yes, he would be very welcome on our team, but I don't see why Montreal would trade him at all.

I think a healthy Kane in the finals would have been the difference but obviously who knows.

I will go to my dying breath stating that a healthy Kane OR a healthy Drai in the finals last year means we win the cup. Not a crazy thought really, when you consider how close the series was and how much of a difference maker either player is in the playoffs. Kane didn't play at all and Drai was a shadow of himself.

.906 is a decent number on a terrible team, Skinner managed .905 only and the Oilers were the best team in the league for the last 80% of the regular season and he could only muster .905.

Yeah it was a brilliant move because he went .930 for them in the playoffs and they have a Cup because of it. Whoever recommended him deserves a free two week vacation anywhere they want if I was running that team.

It's not like Skinner has ever had stretches of truly high level play where it gives you pause that his potential might outweigh his current struggles. I'll never understand the contingent of fans who have to come defend him nightly when 80 percent of the games he plays are ones like last night but they'll bide their time until he has that one game or stretch of three wheres he's above .915 because the team only let him see 20ish shots and act like their blind faith is somehow justified.

You are inadvertently proving OP’s point- if Vegas had done what you are advocating we do, they never would have traded for Hill and would’ve had to continue riding their unstable and unreliable trio of goalies. They didn’t, and look what happened.

No one is asking Bowman to go get Hellebuyck. What we want is a goalie who is not bottom third in every statistical measure. This is not hard but until the org tells you Stu isn’t the answer, you are not going to believe it.

Because we all know a better option isn't coming in, or will be ruined by Dustin Schwartz. Skinner is what we have. He's a backup being forced into a starter's role because the starter they signed wasn't scouted properly and is now not even an NHL goalie. The Oilers have been a goalie graveyard for well over a decade now. How is the next one we bring in going to be the solution?

So let's get this straight. The Oilers should get rid of Skinner then make Rodrigue the starter. Then when he's just OK, they should make Pickard the starter. Then when we have an injury, we should trade for Silovs.
And if the Oilers win the cup, we can run around telling everyone that was phenomal peice of GMing by Bowman. Sound about right?

Games like the FLA one shine a light on the fact that Ekholm-Bouchard haven’t been as rock solid in the defensive zone as they were last season. They’re often getting reeled in by speedy forechecks this year and forcing bad passes.

Imo the team really needs one more Kulak-type (or better) to round out the D. Not to play with Nurse, but to break up Ekholm-Bouchard, and let them both get a partner with more speed.

Ekholm-Emberson have looked good together on the PK and could/should be able to work at evens, and Nurse-Kulak have been dominant together, so don’t break them up; That leaves you needing a smooth skating defenceman to go with Bouchard.

Before the snide (but correct) remarks of Broberg, who would be an ideal partner for Bouch? While I’m not a big fan of NHL Edge, as it doesn’t measure acceleration, in this case I do want what it judges as an elite skater: Someone that skates miles and does it fast. I also want someone with decent puck skills and vision, but plays a safe game. (Basically prime Sekera)

Of the UFAs to be, Provorov makes a ton of sense…

Nurse-Kulak
Provorov-Bouchard
Ekholm-Emberson

… but that would be a one and done and super expensive. Going for a cheaper option, I still really like the fit of Valimaki, who had a couple good seasons with the Yotes before losing his role to Sergachev this year. The fact that he’s only due 2mil next year also helps with the cap and fitting in Drai and Bouchard’s upcoming raises.

Nurse-Kulak
Ekholm-Emberson
Valimaki-Bouchard

Of course, you can still run Ekholm-Bouchard and have Valimaki-Emberson as a 3rd pairing. This gives you a release valve vs. heavy forechecks.
Ekholm was able to cover for Bouchard before, he is getting older and more worn down. Still a warrior but he has played the most top pairing minutes in a long time. I have been trying hard not to bash Bouch as I don't want him, don't like his attitude, or what they will have to pay him. But he has been at best the 3rd best dman on this team most games. Most nights all the LD are better than then RD.

I like how in your attempted gotcha the Oilers end up doing exactly what you don’t want them to do and then win the Cup.

Ummm, what? They wouldn't have traded for him.. It's called injuries and mental health, or did you omit that part.

If Skinner gets hurt, or Pickard, pretty darn sure the Oikers go hunting for a backup also.

And btw, to keep it in the same parameters, it better be the 3rd best goalie on said team

He seems under the impression that every team's random washed John Gibson caliber shitter or 3rd string goalie is better than Skinner.

The Oilers are in arguably the same amount of need given Skinner’s inability to play like even an average NHL goalie. But again you are arguing yourself into a corner here by declaring we shouldn’t do what Vegas did… because it worked? Please make it make sense.

This is statistically true. That’s how bad Skinner is but a certain group of people cannot bring themselves to admit it because reasons.

Please explain to me how to magically put Skinner on LTIR?

And please, what backup goalie is gonna walk in here and win a cup?

Unless there's an injury, it's not the same thing. Wrap your head around that before making a terrible comparison

The faith that some people have in Oilers scouting is remarkable.

The same scouting that decided that Jack Campbell was going to carry this team to a Cup.
