Buffalo Sabres have traded young players early and have regretted it. Great examples are Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart.

Buffalo is going to make a terrible move here. That's a team that needs to clean house before any major trades are made - have the track record of Eichel, Reinhart, et. al.
They're trying to trade Cozens as well and Nashville is gunning for him. Is Buffalo ever going to realize their foolish decisions?

Man prying Mattias Samuelsson out of Buffalo would be great. He would fit the top-4 for a while at a nice caphit.

I don't think Tage Thompson is a true #1 C, and aside from Dahlin I don't trust their defensemen, including Byram. I think they're going to get rid of the wrong players and continue to toil. Cozens had 31 goals as a 21 year old C 2 years ago, something clearly is there, but the environment stinks. I feel bad for Mcleod, that franchise is a death stamp for so many players especially if you aren't a star.

Unfortunately we have nothing of value to send their way for him (that they didn't already have and discard).

If/when the team gets healthy I could very well see Kane-Henrique-Kapanen being put together as the third line and being a very very effective one at that.
I used to think that too because he broke into the league on the wing and I hadn’t paid him much attention till lately. But hes taken 50 more face offs than Ryan this year and 300 more than him last year at well over 50%. Took the third most faceoffs on the Preds last year. He is pretty clearly a center.
A 6’6” 230+ lbs center who plays on their PK, has 50 hits (would only be behind Podz here), and put up 12 goals and 22 points last year. He’s an upgrade over Ryan and Philp and fills the few things we are lacking on the forward group. Namely, he’s huge, tough to play against and can play.

I would trade away Kane tbh. 5M in cap space can go a long way. And if he does go, I wouldn't be opposed to some meat on the 4th line.

Terrible idea unless it's part of a big package for a significant asset imo. A fully healthy Evander Kane is a massive headache for opposing teams in the playoffs. I certainly wouldn't throw Kane out like a bunch of people want to for some reason.

Kane can completely change a series when he’s healthy. The exact player teams grab for a playoff run.

We could use that $5M to try and get a Top 6 power forward that will get you 25+ goals, intimidate, and play with a consistent physical egde.
Oh wait.....
If you want to free up cap space from the forward group, it’s Skinner or RV. Kane brings a dimension that the team lacks.
Skinner has control, but if you tell him he’s the odd man out maybe he waves. If not, RV has no protection.
Why is it a terrible idea? The oilers made it to the finals largely without him, and they are doing fine this year.
You must have missed the impact he had in the Nuck series in particular. We don't win that series without him.
It's a terrible idea because he's a productive player, on a contract that is easily in line with his value, is a solid playoff performer, and he brings several elements we lack. Theorizing about what we could do with the $5M in cap space is insane when the $5M he takes up is easily worth it.
If it's part of a larger more foundational move next year then sure, maybe. But that's it.
Not to mention Evander will need a ton of time to shake off the rust PLUS may not be as effective as before even in the best of cases. His surgeries were no joke and at his age it's an even bigger hill to climb. We're also pretty loaded on the wings right now so it will be tough for him to get ice time in situations where he's most effective (that is, with premier linemates).
I think if there's a deal out there to improve the team and Kane's cap is what makes it work, you have to look seriously at it. I especially don't want to have $5M in dead cap next year if he's healthy enough to play but not healthy enough to be the player he once was. We have to operate more like Vegas and not be afraid to cut bait on guys as they enter their twilight years. It's why they win.
Because the last time he was truly healthy for playoffs he was a top three player on the team. And he brings elements that our group lacks.
Versus Skinner and RV, who are basically the same type of player and have been made at least somewhat redundant by waiver wire pick ups and reclamation projects.
