There is speculation that the cap next year could be $95-97M. The crazy thing is that at say $96M there is a realistic path to re-signing Shesterkin if he would accept $11.5M. Now I am under no delusion that getting Shesterkin is even a remote possibility but such a move could make the Oilers legitimate cup favourites for half a decade at least.

Here is what it would take to make it work cap wise:

This year: trade S. Skinner and either Arvidsson or J. Skinner + Futures for Shesterkin

Next year: 1) Bridge Bouchard at $8.5M for 2 years (possibly through arbitration)
2) Sign Shesterkin 8 years at 11.5M
3) Trade Arvidsson if that has not already been done or move Kane.

If you did this I think you could run the following line-up at a $96M cap

Nuge McDavid Hyman
Podkolzin Draisaitl Kapanen
Kane Henrique Savoie
Janmark Philp Brown

Ekholm Bouchard
Nurse Stetcher
Kulak Emberson
XXX

Shesterkin
Pickard

Now I am not at all confident that Shesterkin would stay in Edmonton at $11.5M. Nor do I think that the Oilers will do something this bold. But that team would be solid. And after next year even with the McDavid extension cap space would start to open up quickly to continue to refresh the team. .

if Shesterkin joins the Oilers, it most likely be a max of 5 years. I don't see him staying for anything longer than that. But that's still good. He would easily become the best goalie the Oilers have ever had

If he only wanted 5 years then that might even be better. The question is what AAV is he looking for. If it is $14M then that is a big issue for any team.

He probably sees the flaws on NYR better than anyone. He's asking 11M to stay on NYR. Maybe he wants out and willing to take a little less. 11M x 5 years or 10M x 7/8 elsewhere

It would be interesting, especially if management is not confident in the prospect group moving forward. Getting an elite goalie is perhaps the only move that really extends the window well into McDavid and Draisaitl's 30s, as you'd have a chance to win any playoff series with those two and an elite goalie. The core is quickly aging out, so would be a very proactive move.

Can't see it happening, but it would be interesting if it did.

I find it hard to believe Trouba is as bad of a player as some claim.

I dont think hes worth the cap so dont get me wrong. But Rangers just really seem to hate the guy. Didnt Trouba win like the Mark Messier Trophy or something a year ago? He seems like the type of player that GM/coaches generally love but fanbase hates (Kind of like Nurse to some extent).

I guess I am just baffled by the situation.

Not the first time the Rangers have punted an unwanted player out of town in a shady manner like this. Sadly, due to the prestige of the city, they'll never suffer any consequences as players will always want to play in New York no matter how bad the organization, taxes, and cost of living are. If Edmonton pulled a stunt like this(like say, punting a severely declining RNH), and the franchise would have to wait for an entire generation of players to retire before anyone let them forget it

I'm curious about the Brady Tkachuk rumors though. There have been rumblings for like 2 years now that NYR has been trying to pry him out of Ottawa. I don't see Trouba going back to Canada in return, but I'm curious as to why NYR are so keen to get the Tkachuk, and even why Ottawa would even consider moving the player in the first place.
