So, I was listening to the Seravalli segment on Oilersnation on the ride to work this morning and he brought up two names or actually it was more like the guys bringing up the names to him and he expanded on it.

Anyway, the two names were Oleksiak and Murphy and he was talking about it taking a 1st+ especially in Murphy's case with retention to land him because he has an extra year of term. Murphy would be a solid addition no doubt but I can't be the only one uninterested in giving that up for him.
Pettersson is a slightly better version of Murphy and went for a 1st as a rental so it's plausible especially at a retained number but just seems like a lot for Murphy.

He also poured cold water on the Marchand thing saying it's highly unlikely that Boston trades him and keep in mind he speculated a while back that Rantanen could be on the trade block so when Frank talks, listen.

I like the idea of Murphy at $2.2M on the cap, but not for a first ideally. You're spot on.

I actually like Soucy more than either of those guys, but that would probably have to be a 3-way deal

Yeah agreed. I think he'd help and really fits a need with physicality and at 2.2m is a steal but I'm uncomfortable with him being the all in move but getting him at 2.2m gives the Oilers flexibility to still address a need elsewhere (top 9 forward?) so from that standpoint it would be a decent move but I'm just kind of meh on it. Don't really like the fit with Nurse either, like Nurse better with a swifter skating puckmover.

Speak of Soucy, Seravalli said the Oilers had interest in him but not so much anymore as he's had a down year in Vancouver.

Huh, what do you know, as the options decrease prices increase. Who could have predicted that?

Anyway, I would do our 2026 1st for Murphy (50%) and Donato. That’s two useful pieces, one with a smidge of term. Donato could end up being worth that by himself terms of impact, lots of ways to use him in our middle six.

Unfortunately if that seems like a lot, wait until we have wasted more time being John Klingberg’s personal rehab program. A 1st for Soucy will seem like a great deal by that point.

I'm hoping this does not give the management the idea we do not need to get a top player.
The Oilers are highly unlikely to get a top player. It's more than likely to be a middle 6 forward or #4/5 Dman similar to Kulak. They're a top 3 team, they don't need a top player to put them over the top and don't really have the resources tbh to land a top player so I think expectations should be tempered if that's the expectation.

I think it's more that the loss of Landeskog (and to a lesser extent a 70+ point Kadri) has left big holes that they've never quite recovered from, but that '22 team was a wagon because of how deep they were able to stack the roster.

Nothing you can do about Landeskog and they were probably right to move on from Kadri given his age.

70 point Kadri?

Didn't he have like 95 points the year they won the cup? Of course it was his career year, and he was never going to replicate it again, but any team that loses that kind of production without replacing it, is never going to be the same.

I could see giving up a first if there was another player coming back with Murphy that management had identified as bring able to help the team. Like if Donato or Kurashev had a place in our lineup.

Happy Friday everyone!

I can't wait to see who gets traded tonight.

Last Friday it was JT Miller

The Friday before it was Rantanen.

Oilers have handled Philp's development well this year. Brought up at the perfect time and not he gets a few weeks to focus in the AHL with Ryan as a mentor.

I will never forgive Jackson for this offseason but the non GM stuff he has done, Kalle in development, Knob, Pracey, and even bowman hiring, I think have moved us forward.

I know people hate Bowman, but it's hard to find plug and play value like Podz and emberson. He has shown he has the ability we need the most.
Bowman was a big part of the offer sheet decision. That shit splashed on him as well.
