I think MP was the best player to commit to out of anyone in this UFA class. As good as Ekholm is today, he is 34 (soon to be 35) and will have an absolute ton of miles on his body come this summer with what is hopefully another deep playoff run.

Meanwhile Pettersson is only 28, a high-grade shutdown defender, yet still good at outletting the puck. He is that age where D tend to take another step forward and $5.5M is going to be absolutely nothing in a $100M cap world. He could have been our in-house Ekholm replacement, or at worst allowed us to ride Ek less.

We don't have anyone else in the system who profiles as a top pairing D... or even as a second pairing one on the left side. Ekholm breaking down is a very real concern and there are few options league-wide who can fill that hole. You're going to be spending $9M+ on those players in the future in FA. Hell, we pay that for Nurse to be a #3 today.

Add in that MP has played the right side a bit in the past, and I just don't understand us not making a move like this when it turned out how reasonable his extension ended up being. Our pro scouting is not good enough to unearth top four D on a whim, and our prospect pool is light on high potential D. At some point you have to be proactive about the future, but Jackson and Bowman haven't demonstrated they care about the next day never mind next year so I don't know where we go from here. We're running out of options which was exactly my worry a month ago when everyone was screaming to be "patient".
Meh, Pettersson is the new Soucy.
We were all drooling over that guy not too long ago and how he would round out our D.
Vancouver got a good deal but it's nothing to lose sleep over.

Question, and maybe it’s been answered.

Is there a roster freeze over the 4-Nations Tourny break similar to Christmas? I can’t remember if there is for the all-star break but I don’t think so.

This one tends to be more accurate, he's bad a defense. He might be a big Swedish Cody Ceci.

The JFresh one is a 3 year average. Look at the line graph on the right, it shows the dropoff on defense this year.

Both of the cards are very similar.

This is an outlier year for him, he's been quite a strong defender prior to this year.

Weird, because they unearthed Ekholm and Kulak on "whims." May have unearthed another one in Emberson too if he continues to grow his game to the next level.

But I know, it's impossible for the Oilers to do good things, only other teams do good things and every single move other teams make are automatically amazing. Even trading franchise wingers and stuff.

I do wonder if Embersons camp has been playing hard ball. And now with Klingberg, he’s lost some leverage if the Oilers think Klingberg slots above him if they were to get a middle pair dman

This is what I'm thinking as well. In addition to the Klingberg signing, their has been a lot happening since both parties were close to an agreement at the start of January.

1. The cap was announced to go up. I wonder if they are trying to get the number raised to align with the cap increasing.

2. Emberson could have hit the free agent market if he didn't play enough games. However, now that he has played more games he's now a RFA with arbitration rights.

Really hard to say which way he's leaning. Most agents usually want to maximize the players earnings. So either he fired his last agent because he couldn't negotiate a higher amount or they waited to long and are now lost their leverage.

Sure, but Ceci seemed liked he could play defense, until he couldn't. I think the desperate howling about him is nonsense is also my point.

So, again, Savoie is just for Friday's game, he would then go back to Bako. He gets a quick look.
I don't like yo-yo'ing young guys around like that (especially blue chip ones), Savoie is on a good trajectory, don't do anything to disrupt the momentum or take him out of his rhythm. When we call him up he should get atleast a 3-5 game stint and send him down with a much better idea on what he needs to work on.

Lots of ifs...if this prospect becomes good, if this Petterson guy stays good...will go from being one of the worst d corps in the league to one of the best

Rono's smoking some good shit. I'm sure the Copium contingent of that fanbase will be clinging to every word from that tweet.

Ugh you guys, lolz. Sure, one game before a break and the stretch, during a stretch where the coaching staff is clearly experimenting with the line up, definitely, going to throw off his development to play a single game lol.

The less clips the NHL have on Savoie the better. He's a black ace for a reason. Play him in the playoffs when we need him and it could surprise a lot of teams.

Like Seguin in the Boston run and Makar in the Avs run

I wouldn't be shocked if that poster is not actually an Oilers fan...just saying.

I laughed at that too. Just a ridiculous and brain dead bit of "analysis," but I'm sure Nuck nation will lap it up.

Now's not the time for Savoie. Give him and Roy a few games near the end of the season if we have our playoff spot locked up.

I don't follow. Ceci had poor analytics basically his whole time in Edmonton.

His card from 2021 shows he peaked in 19/20 with ~75% defense, after a VERY poor 18/19. He was already trending back down when we signed him. So, clearly 19/20 was an outlier.

How is Ceci at all comparable to Petterson? Petterson's results have been as a top pairing D man. Ceci was playing second pairing.

While it's a thrill to play that first NHL game, it's not helpful to us an organization in any way, you can't evaluate player on that first game, he's probably going to play 10 or less minutes and be a bundle of nerves, that will leave feeling like he didn't really get to showcase himself and what he is capable of.

Call him up when we can give him some runway.

Seems like another JRotten, take some cherry-picked timeline stats and apply some "expert analysis" to accompany. Leave it to the player at hand

Nope didn't say that. You are the one making stuff up. I've been telling everyone the Oilers are were/are going to win the cup.

Sorry I said that Bouchard wasn't a top 5 defensemen in the NHL. Sorry I'm not that high on Savoie. It must offend you.
lol- you’re pretty sensitive aren’t you?

Nope. No roster freeze. Reid was talking about this on a he drive home show yesterday

I don't think a playoffs opponent would care about getting surprised by an AHL callup.

Getting a taste of NHL could do wonders for development for a prospect if given the right minutes. It gives them a carrot to chase , gets them used to NHL life and shows them what they could work on back in AHL.

Practicing with big club would be useful as well.

I wish our GM was so smart that he could not sign draisaitl and then trade him for lesser players.

Who needs facts lmao? Ceci = Pettersson which is a dig apparently... but then I bet the same group was screaming that Cody was a perfectly good top four D who didn't an upgrade each of the three seasons prior because Stauffer was telling them as such. Typical.

Here’s a fact for you.

Oilers are 3rd in the NHL, teams that are top 3 don’t just pick up every player possible to look like the GM is working.

You clearly don't know the player if you are comparing him to Ceci, his defense took a hit this season playing a more offensive role playing with Erik "No Defense" Karlsson and old man Letang, but this is a very capable and solid d-man.
