That's fine. I'm ok with that. He looks good to me. I'm sure they will add somebody good in the end

That I do agree with it. They shouldn't be sitting on their hands. I just don't see us "going all in" this year. They need to get guys back with term or open to extensions. The last thing I think we should do is trade Savoie / O'Reilly / Akey. Trading our top prospects will help us extend our window. Draisaitl is already locked up and I would expect McDavid and Bouchard to follow.

As long as your consistent. I'm gonna save this post as I dont think it will age well. Pettersson is not the type of defenceman the Oilers need to commit 6 years and 33M to when he doesn't even play the right side.

I think MP was the best player to commit to out of anyone in this UFA class. As good as Ekholm is today, he is 34 (soon to be 35) and will have an absolute ton of miles on his body come this summer with what is hopefully another deep playoff run.

Meanwhile Pettersson is only 28, a high-grade shutdown defender, yet still good at outletting the puck. He is that age where D tend to take another step forward and $5.5M is going to be absolutely nothing in a $100M cap world. He could have been our in-house Ekholm replacement, or at worst allowed us to ride Ek less.

We don't have anyone else in the system who profiles as a top pairing D... or even as a second pairing one on the left side. Ekholm breaking down is a very real concern and there are few options league-wide who can fill that hole. You're going to be spending $9M+ on those players in the future in FA. Hell, we pay that for Nurse to be a #3 today.

Add in that MP has played the right side a bit in the past, and I just don't understand us not making a move like this when it turned out how reasonable his extension ended up being. Our pro scouting is not good enough to unearth top four D on a whim, and our prospect pool is light on high potential D. At some point you have to be proactive about the future, but Jackson and Bowman haven't demonstrated they care about the next day never mind next year so I don't know where we go from here. We're running out of options which was exactly my worry a month ago when everyone was screaming to be "patient".

Let me stop you right there, you can probably stop inventing random all-stars. Pettersson seems to be a solid top-4 guy, and brings some offense, but maybe, just maybe, he's not a $5.5M game breaker the Nucks will try to trade in a year or 2 when the get bored(?) of him.

Your inferiority complex related to the 3rd best team in the entire league is f***ing bizarre.

I don't think any team would want to beat what Nucks gave up for Pettersson. That's a lot. With that said, a right handed version of Petterson would fit really nicely with Nurse. both guys are minute crusher. He's not afraid to drop the gloves either.

Maybe it's just me, but for me RNH has been playing really well the last month or so when he's been at center. Yes he's been bobbling at times on the PP but he doesn't usually handle the puck as much on the PP as he has lately. What does that tell you? It tells me that McDavid is deferring more because he is not healthy.
Agree on both of these. I've actually been impressed with Nuge at C this year, much more assertive as compared to previous years. Gives us good options if he can slide down to 3C with any regularity. Also, something is definitely not right with McD. I don't know if he's pacing himself, or sick, but he's been getting outchanced and outshot in recent games as well, so it's not just an eye test thing. He just turned 28, the talk of decline is ridiculous- maybe he won't hit 150 points anymore but there's no reason he can't keep the hundred point seasons up into his mid 30s.

I still wonder, especially if Chicago would eat some of it, could Connor Murphy fit there

The guy we are adding should be good enough to push RNH, Arvid, Skinner down the lineup and guys like Janmark, Perry out of the lineup. If he can't do that than we are just spending assets for the sake of spending. Doesn't really address any area. Just musical chairs.

Same with goalies. The guy we are bringing should be a tier better than Pickard
I would put Donato at a fairly similar level to Evan Rodrigues and I will say despite not being a big name, there is zero chance in hell FLA beats us without him, sometimes these little bit players can have a big impact.

Donato isn't the kind of player that should be a priority for us, but lets say we go the direction landing a big fish at D or in Goal instead of at forward, Donato seems like one of those smart little cost efficient adds that we can do in addition to our 1 big fish move.

I agree with you here

Fully second this post. There's no GM that faces greater challenge to build and sustain an NHL organization. GM Chevy shrewdly navigates player landmines with patience and precision to turn what looks like sure lose situations into smart trades that improve their hockey team.

Essentially managing with one hand tied behind his back with an increasingly entitled workforce snubbing their nose to Winnipeg, Chevaldayoff provides sure handed, non panic leadership to negotiate deals that improve, not erode their team.

I have a ton of time for the Jets (when they aren't playing the Oilers). And I have shifted to "Buying Canadian" (except the Flames!) in cheering for Cup champions over and above the increasing Americanization of the game and shifts that include leveraging no tax destinations that further widen the buying power and tilt the competitive balance.

Off the top of my head I don't know if I can ever remember a GM dealing two high profile players in telegraphed "f*** everyone knows they want out" deals on separate occasions and actually winning both trades hands down.

As the Kings and Rangers are still stinging from the Trouba and PLD experiences, the Jets are sitting fat and happy with players on their roster that are frankly better than either. He also did well in the Evander Kane deal way back when under similar circumstances.

Gonna save this too. Never thought I'd see top pairing D and Marcus Pettersson in the same post.

That's a good comp. Donato is a very smart forward who can play any position and any role in the middle six. Huge to have a guy like that in the playoffs when injuries inevitably hit.

We also don't "need" retention on him since he only makes $2M. I would still love Murphy, so if we could find a way to land both I'd be thrilled.

I mean, he's been playing those minutes for PIT already:
