The pursuit of O'Conner to me reeks of "we now realize we totally f***ed up in the summer getting offer sheeted and then not matching, we're now hyper focused on trying to bring in a Holloway style forward that we projected he would be in the bottom 6 at least".

I hope the front office has a more broad look at team needs and isn't just fixated on the unfortunate errors they made in the summer.
It f***ing does f***ing not. Geez, the stuff you invent for yourself is something else.

No, O'Connor looks like a fast, effective bottom-6 forward who's out performing his contract and was probably available.

Holloway or no, they Oilers could use another effective, especially one that can PK and take faceoffs.

Our bottom 6 is fairly overloaded as is to begin with, who would have even be taking out? He isn't a right shot center.

No, there are a lot of players, O'Connor played a lot on Pitt's top-6 and if he can be more offensive than Podkolzin, you're a deeper team.

I've been high on the player all year, so it good the team was interested as well.

Team needs a lot more than just a speedy bottom 6er.
I don’t think they care like you think they do.

I wonder how available Saros is with Nashville being so bad. With the cap going up so much we can easily fit him without retention. I'd offer Skinner, 2026 1st and a prospect of Nashville's choice.

One of the reasons Nashville is struggling is because of Saros' decline:
2020-21: 0.927
2021-22: 0.918
2022-23: 0.919
2023-24: 0.906
2024-25: 0.901

Not a great trend before starting the new contract

Fair, I would argue they haven't defended as well in recent years either, and given what Skinner "brings" it's worth the bet.

That our front office couldn't even close a deal for a third liner with 6 goals should worry everybody. Stan is consistently getting outmaneuvered for anyone other than waiver claims and players rehabbing from major surgery. I also question too why this player was a target- it addresses no needs.

By comparison Saros is only 29 btw.
Is this even a remote possibility? Like, I love the dude, and think he would really stabilize things for us, but 7.75 until 32-33...is it worth the first and prospect as well as eating up any remaining cap we have. Though Skinner would likely have to go back in that deal for cap reasons.

Maybe that brings the price down for him. I've noticed this trend started happening after losing Ekholm on D. Good thing that guy plays for us now.

Sharks flipped Ceci for a third. So basically emberson for a third. They are stock piling. Sharks will be a big threat in about 5 years once the McDrai era winds down.

Wait and see what he does. If we have a poor deadline, then we can bitch.

We do have wingers for Drai- it's that our coach doesnt like the combinations.
Draisaitl with Hyman and Perry worked when McDavid was out stick with it.
McDavid refuses to shoot- Skinner and Arvy love to shoot. Stick those guys together.

See how those top 2 lines work until the deadline. Then reassess.
Perry, Skinner, Arvidsson are not great top 6 options.

You are proving my point.

Most of who's who for deadline rentals has already been moved, or won't be now because their teams are in the wildcard chase. We're now stuck looking mostly at risky long-term contracts like Karlsson or overpaying even more than is typical for a Provorov type who may not even fit what we actually need.

Based on his moves to date, it looks like Bowman is either unable to make any trades of substance (perhaps because other GMs don't want to do business with a peer who shamed their profession) or is unwilling to part with material assets for material improvements. Neither is a good thing for this team's Cup aspirations. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but that's the data we have to work with and the chatter around possible moves rarely if ever includes someone more than a replacement level player (see: O'Connor, Drew today). It's hard to draw any other conclusion.

The rational thinking people here understand. There are still lots of solid potential targets and lots of time to get them.

Good luck with the ones who think management should trade for everyone and have a 60 man roster, understanding that(the poster you responded to being exhibit A).

I don’t think they’d really want rumours out there considering they don’t want to completely trash Skinner’s confidence.
I hope that's what it is. It's just maddening when it feels like the team and all the media aren't really telling it like it is, and are playing this meta game of supporting the team, because too much pressure will make a player worse, and is seen as a downside of working in a market like Edmonton. I do sometimes wonder if I'm wrong because this conspiracy stuff is usually not right

Personally I think pulling punches in the media is wrong. Skinner (and any player) should just tune out all outside information and focus on their game, and on off time do fun things that don't involve reading up on what people are saying online and in the media.

Would love to give Savoie a few games in the top 6 after the 4 Nations. Has been showing off some high level skill in the AHL skills comp/all-star game, and has a good one-timer snap shot off the left circle that would be great with either McDavid or Drai, and the skating to keep up with either of them.
I bet they would do that if they want to rest guys in the final couple weeks of the season. I do think that it would be smart to give Savoie some time, even when you say. A taste of meaningful NHL games would inform his development. There might be parts of his game that will cut it in the lower leagues but not the NHL

Not Oilers related but I do find it interesting that multiple former and current teammates came out in defense of JT Miller since the whole fiasco began, saying how much they loved playing with him, his fire, his competitiveness, and even coaches like Bruce Boudreau- while nobody has said the same about EP or come to his defense throughout all this.

Identifying O'Connor as a target actually does give me some hope for the deadline.

1) He's 26. Likely means that we're looking for guys in their 20's as opposed to more olds.
2) He's fast. Suggests that the front office knows that team speed is still an issue.
3) He's more of a 3rd liner than a 4th liner.
4) He's got good size and our bottom 6 is not big. We'll need some bigger bodies for the playoffs.

Personally I would like to target a top 6 winger to give us more flexibility, but DOC wasn't a bad target for what he is.

I think it was Serevalli who said the feel around Vancouver was they traded away the wrong player.

I'm glad Colorado didn't get him

Miller centering the Oilers 2nd line would be filthy

Oilers nation has become almost unwatchable. They won't stop glazing and defending Skinner. Meanwhile this is all bouchards fault again despite being on the ice for 1GA and the the ice for 3 of them.

They finally criticized him after last game. Now we just need some more prominent media to do the same
