Have any of Stu's supporters addressed this yet?

On a smaller note from last night: I like Stecher as a backup for Emberson, Klingberg, Kulak, and even Bouchard, the guys the Oil don't really lean on for their physical play; but they need a someone who can replace the size of Ekholm and Nurse for when they're not in the lineup.

and someone on the right side who can do it ever

How many goalies would be "average" here? Like 80% of the goalies in the league? I could see James Reimer having a better save percentage here right now than Skinner does and even will have at the end of the year if he got to play behind our superior defensive structure.

The bigger question is why we are taking the massive risk of betting on "average" goaltending in a critical window.

This could blow up in your face at any time, in 6 playoff rounds, Skinner has been very good in exactly 1/6, bad in 3/6, and OK/decent in 2/6.

This year is now the second year in a row that despite having great defensive structure in front of him, his numbers are sliding backwards again when they should be going up, his 19-15 record this year is basically a no.8/no.9 seed, his 2-9-2 record against top teams is atrocious, his save percentage is below average, his GSAA is way below average.

This is gross negligence to risk the McDavid era on this.

It's not even like the money we're spending that's skimmed off the top of goaltending is even doing us any good. What the f*** is 4 million Arvidsson bringing to the table? Worse than Yamamoto production. 3 million Jeff Skinner isn't allowed to play in the top 6 apparently. Kane is 5 million when he "comes back". Henrique is phoning in a 1.4 million season for 3 million. Move some of this shit, you don't need this much overpaid junk on your roster.

The team will need to come to grips with goaltending soon. At the end of next season if he simply continues to play as he has Skinner will probably be asking for $6M+ based on the rising cap. At $2.6M there might be a reason to sit pat. At $6M they will be stuck between a rock and a hard place if they give it to him so they probably let him walk.

If they don't address goaltending this deadline they probably have to do so this off season.

I like Calvin Pickard, but I think it's worth pointing out that he has a .909 and .901 the last two years with the Oilers after having a sv% ranging from .797 to .892 the previous 6 years. I think it's safe to say the Oilers being so good defensively has a positive effect on sv%.

There isn't even a reason to stand "pat" for 2.6 million. That's still doesn't make any sense, the next 2 years are extremely valuable years we will never get back again in terms of McDavid and Draisaitl's prime.

There is no luxury here of standing pat, if McDavid and Draisaitl were 21 and 23 respectively, alright, even then it would be kind of stupid to do that, but they're not.

on what planet does Skinner deserve 6+ mil? there's no chance

Obviously it does, but there's like 4 posters that just want to put their head in the sand and argue "acshually maybe Skinner would have a better save percentage on Anaheim, dur hur!". lol, gimme a break. Yeah maybe he'd average 25 ppg in the NBA too while we're at it.

Blackwood just got 5.25. He played one season where had had more than 40 starts, and his sv% was .899 and that was only two seasons ago. Skinner started 59 games last season and had a .905. And he went to the cup finals. This team is going to make him a lot of money.

If we don't get another goalie to truly see what Skinner is, Skinner will get more than 6. There will always be arguments the agent will make. There are stats like wins. They will argue that if Skinner had a .920 save percentage, combined with team success, then that goalie would get like 9 million with this inflating cap. And of course there will cherry picked stats like what the defense of Skinner now is like

I don't see how the team almost triples his salary, unless he's lights-out in the playoffs

His current salary is very low for a starter. Tripling is arbitrary. Skinner is virtually guaranteed to get more than what Blackwood signed for, because Blackwood signed with almost no resume. That isn't even the floor. The Oilers starting offer probably starts with a 6, and Skinner's camp with an 8. I'm probably too conservative even
