Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

Toronto’s situation isn’t really comparable to ours because our star players routinely perform in the playoffs. No salary structure is a winning structure if your best players don’t show up.
But the problem is seldom do other players show up. Year after year of changing up the bottom six to minimal success. The top of our lineup has never really been an issue.

I wouldn't worry about the bottom 6. Savoie and OReilly along with Beau Akey will be knocking on doors really soon

I was playing around with capfriendly and if we sign Bouchard to a 9 million deal, trade Kane with no cap coming back and sign the extra 6 positions for around 1 million each we can afford to sign Rantanen for 12 million if the cap goes up to 98 million.

Tampa succeeds because they draft super well, not because they went whale hunting every July. Imagine getting a Brayden Point in the third round.
They succeeded because they had more elite players than their opponents. At this point if you get that kind of player through the draft or through FA, does it matter if it still fits within the cap?

I had it at 97M with Rantanen making 14M and Bouchard making 10M. I used the extreme end. Next season will be tight for sure but in 2026-27 there will be so much more breathing room with the cap being close to 105M with only McDavid getting the biggest raise.

2025-26
Hyman(5.5)-McDavid(12.5)-Rantanen(14)
Pods(1)-Drai(14)-Savoie(900k)
RNH(5.125)-Henrique(3)-Brown(1)
Janmark(1)-Philp(900k)-Kapanen(1)
x(1)

Ekholm(6)-Bouchard(10)
Nurse(9.25)-x(1) address this with the accrue cap space at the deadline
Kulak(2.7)-Emberson(1)
Stecher(1)

Stuart(2.6)
Pickard(1)

Dead cap(1.5)

97M

Drafted players tend to be quite a bit cheaper than UFAs.
Plus you're going against other teams with deeper pockets and more desirable places to live.

Another thing to consider is this. We are already a destination for players on the cheap. Kane, Perry, Klingberg all took their cheap 1 years here.

A team with McDavid, Draisaitl and Rantanen would be the #1 destination for any player looking for a 1 year deal to chase the cup

Tell that to the pre cap rangers 🤣🤣
They paid for elite players well past their prime.

It's easy to look back and say "Holy shit, they got Brayden Point in the 3rd round" but he wasn't projected to be the player he is today. They got lucky. That's what the draft is. Luck and being able to properly develop the guys.

I can’t see it but that’s interesting.

Part of me thinks they might be better off doing something like this and filling more holes with 1m players.

I’m not sure how much they are really getting out of the 3m type of players.

Still don’t know how you make it work with McDavid, Draisaitl, Nurse and Bouchard though.

Our 1M players are doing better than Skinner and Arvid. I'm not too worried

If Klingberg looks good, better than Emberson, are we no longer adding a defenceman? If we have the money to upgrade for the playoffs, why wouldn't you do it even if it means taking Emberson out for a playoff run? Unless we're just going to add at forward. But I mean, they have quite a bit of cap space. I'd be disappointed if they don't upgrade the D regardless of how good Klingberg looks.
Let's just see what we have in Klingberg first.. the man is coming off a long time off and was pretty sad before it.
+/- of -85 since 2020-2021

Emberson looked solid last night and played key defensive minutes alongside Ekholm. No way he get taken out for Klingberg after playing 19min TOI

No thanks to a 16M per winger. Rantanen isn't worth it.

Not really. This team has drafted poorly for years. It's not a string of bad luck, they just suck ass at scouting. Remember the days of taking Oil Kings in the second round? Woof. Tampa on the other hand has a decent track record of finding good players in later rounds. And even guys like Drouin they managed to turn into something better.

Chicago during their run was the same thing. Duncan Keith in the second round. Byufglien in the 8th round. The list goes on.
