I’m sure we can find suitors for Henrique need to be gone if we have any chance at a cup.
Wait, what?

Not seeing it with Arvidsson. Will give it a few more games but if it's not coming that's too much of a contract commitment for a player that's filling no team need.

John Gibson would help us a lot more than what he's bringing

Arvidsson + 2nd for Gibson @30% retained. At least he gets to go back to the LA area so it should be an easy move for his family.

It's frustrating but this team honestly probably needs a forward more than a D.
Wait, what?

Lets just upgrade Pickard.
Pickard is the least of the Oilers worries. It would be a dumb move. Give Skinner another month to even get to Pickards numbers. If he doesn't, that's clear indication what we need to upgrade. Our backup is more than good enough.

I am LAUGHING at this Canucks drama right now. The rumours around lil' Petey and Miller are hilarious. What an embarrassing org.

Wonder what rumours are out there as to who will get traded first and for what return?

I know it's not an Oilers rumour but it will impact whether the Oil win in 5 or 4 if they meet in the playoffs again.
Hope they get rid of Miller, would be so much easier to play in a series. They would be smart to trade Petey

Which goalies are available now? The clear upgrades and what the Oilers have
Imo it makes sense to still try someone else here in Pickard's spot, and perhaps even keep Pickard at the same time. I definitely wouldn't trade Stu Skinner unless a dumb thing happens like the Isles trade Sorokin.

Just try someone, and that means a Blackwood type that is on a bad team, and so their performance might be suppressed. Imo the place to look at is Detroit. I would keep tabs on Husso, Lyon, and Talbot. Scout these guys and be sure to look deeply on who is getting easier games, high danger chances, etc. There are places to look, like Utah if they fall completely out of it

There's got to be a smart bet somewhere in the league, that is cheap in cap and trade assets.

Looks to be tracking well. Youngest goalie to start a game in Wild history. Last season 2.70 gaa, 910 sav% & winning record on a non-playoff team with a -61 goal share. Iowa Wild looks like a real young AHL roster squarely focused on development.

"Wallstedt, who is viewed by many as the top NHL goalie prospect, has earned AHL Goalie of the Week honors twice this season. He has posted a .913 save percentage or better in 17 of his 33 starts — including 13 contests with a .930 SV% or higher. Not only has he had a large workload in terms of starts, but he’s also faced the fifth-most shots across the AHL with 964 shots against in 33 games. Not to mention he’s been in net for 16 of Iowa’s 19 wins this season." Top Prospect Jesper Wallstedt Growing Through Ups and Downs of Sophomore Season | Minnesota Wild

Personally I wanted Cossa in that draft (and fully believe the Oilers were targeting him until Detroit moved up to snake that). But with Wallstedt there at their pick, I felt they should still have taken the best ranked, pedigree goaltender of the draft class. However reality was a position player would likely develop quicker and add some cheap salary years in the near term winning window versus a goaltender, even an elite one, jumping into an NHL support role. But ... well that didn't work out with their draft choice.

Oilers organizational strategy with goaltending has been very spotty. Sign and play retread guys at the NHL and a draft approach of throwing volume, low percentage picks hoping to find a diamond. Skinner's the only home grown guy to breakthrough to NHL success and that was out of necessity with the colossal misfire on the Jack Campbell winning window bet.

Never any certainty for drafted players at any position. But Wallstedt looks to be growing his game within a clear succession planning in Minnesota.
Wallstedt obviously has the pedigree based on his work in the SHL and he's 2 years younger so that matters but Rodrigue has put up better AHL numbers once he assumed the starters role and this goes back 3 years now on teams that weren't exactly juggernauts. Obviously Wallstedt has physical tools that Rodrigue doesn't but if we're looking at numbers, I'm seeing a goalie in the Oilers organization that has a potential NHL future not to mention the goalie that backstopped them to a Cups final last season and almost won a Calder two years ago so the Oilers goalie development in recent years isn't as bad as you're stating.

Not to mention that there's a kid in Sweden, Jonsson, who is having wildly good season. The Finnish kid they recently drafted has some really good tools as well.
Historically, goalie development has been a graveyard in the Oilers organization but it seems to be improving as of late.

I like Pickard, but as long as our goalies are just here, there will always be doubt that us being a contender is inflating their performance. That actually makes sense with Pickard because he suddenly got better here. Since none of our goalies are slam dunks like Hellebuyck, we should be testing the waters for goalies. Maybe a goalie on the Oilers should have a .915- .920 save percentage, based on the quality of our defending

Pickard has had a grand total of 1 bad game all season and that was early on October vs CHI.
Our team defense needs fixing before goaltending . Get Bouchard a stay at home D partner who can't skate past our blueline and our goaltending stats will improve

Blackwood was the play but looks like we are stuck with what we got.
Pretty big cost to acquire though. Not sure what the Oilers equivalent of Kovalenko+2nd was. Podkolzin+2nd+???

Not a fan of giving that up for a goalie that's been a question mark for half a decade and has had a hard time staying healthy. That's not a massive package to give up but I'd rather save those bullets for more of a sure thing.

With that said, I do think the Oilers should add a goalie that could potentially push Skinner but I don't see a cost effective option out there that's a clear upgrade on Pickard.

More like the other way around ... the goaltending is inflated by Coffey's defensive system.

The minute either goalie has to make a bit more high danger saves, they fall apart like a cheap tent.

That also explains the poor starts for the last two years in large part ... the D simply is never going to be in mid-season form to start a season, when the D isn't perfectly in sync, the goalies get exposed for what they are.

Bouchard is screwing up his contract extension, but the rest of the D and even him are generally fine for the most part.

There are other options like Talbot, who has better numbers this year than Blackwood.

We need a third goalie regardless, or the Oilers need to start giving Rodrigue NHL starts.
Another fun one is Vejmelka

Of course Utah wants to keep him but he's impending UFA making 2.7 million, so retention would make him easy to fit.

With his .918 he may be expensive. Maybe by the deadline their new goalie looks good enough, and Vejmelka looks like he's walking.

I agree that 2nd pair RD is priority. I say go after that player and then see about a goalie after.

Both a 2nd and Podkolzin would not have been necessary from us since the Avs needed to sweeten the pot for San Jose to take on the awful Georgiev contract, and we could have fit him in without that.

But either way, Blackwood is living up to the hype- 2.03 GAA and 0.931 Sv% in Colorado, which is no surprise given how good his underlying numbers were in San Jose. This is yet another case of our GM putting his hands over his ears and lalaling away an extremely common sense and straight forward upgrade in lieu of hopes and prayers. Imagine this team with Blackwood and Fabbro, we'd be a wagon instead of needing to out-play our weaknesses every night.

If Blackwood and Askarov go on to have major success, this management group here is going to have a lot of questions about what the f*** they are doing sitting on their hands while other teams go out and get it done.

Guys are available, this management group is instead shopping for Jeff Skinners.

Playoff forward lines:

RNH - McDavid - Hyman
Podkolzin - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Kane - Fast physical C - Perry / Kapanen
Janmark - Henrique - Brown (shutdown line)

I just don’t see where Skinner fits, especially when Kane is back.

Well, it's 4 games. Skinner has stellar numbers in his last 9 as well. Pickard has been solid as of late as well. Goaltending has been fine after the rough start to the season, just like last year. The team is a wagon with this goalie duo.

Fabbro they dropped the ball on though. That would have cost virtually nothing.,
Stecher has been solid but he's not a top 6 on a true Cup contender IMO. I still maintain that a top 4 Dman is the biggest need.

Of course Rico and Arvidsson both show up tonight after I have them 2 and 3 on my trade list. Hopefully both can grow into their roles before the playoffs start.
Anything is possible. Players do "amp" up their game come playoff time.

Look how much people kept shi**ing on Connor Brown last year. They were done with him. He was coming off a long injury. He was superman come playoff time lol.

And now he is on pace for 40sh points.
